Local Victim Coordination Program Victim Assist Queensland Local Victim Coordination Program Agency assistance Victim Assist Queensland (Victim Assist) provides the Local Victim Coordination Program to assist victims of violent crime, and their support agencies, when they go through the criminal justice system and apply for financial assistance in Queensland. Have your clients been injured by an act of violence? Victim Assist can put you and your clients in contact with support services (e.g. counselling), and help your clients to apply for financial assistance if they have been injured during a violent crime in Queensland. Injuries can be physical (e.g. harm to the body) or they can be psychological (e.g. emotional harm or mental illness). Financial assistance can help cover costs that may assist your client’s recovery including medical, dental, counselling, travel expenses, loss of earnings and funeral expenses. Are your clients going to court? Clients, or their family, who need to attend court regarding a violent crime and want information about the court process or need help understanding legal terms, can get assistance from Victim Assist. Victim Coordination Officers are located in the Cairns, Rockhampton and Ipswich courthouses. A Local LinkUp Information Officer is located in the Townsville courthouse. These officers can help your clients by: providing them with information about the court process including potential timeframes and expectations referring them to specialist agencies that can provide practical court support, assistance in writing a Victim Impact Statement and counselling assisting your clients to complete an application for financial assistance. Victim Coordination Officers may also provide intensive support to your clients if they are experiencing difficult circumstances or have complex needs and there are no local agencies available to provide that support. This support may include: supporting your clients through a court matter which can include accompanying clients to court and court related meetings assisting your clients to prepare a Victim Impact Statement. You can contact a program officer for information on how to refer a client to the program. Agency support and training The Local Victim Coordination Program can assist you and your agency when providing services to victims of violent crime who need to go to court. Victim Coordination Officers can support your agency’s service by: Providing free training on: - court processes - how you can provide court support - how you can assist a client in preparing a Victim Impact Statement - how you can assist clients to complete a Victim Assist financial application form. Providing you with information and resources that may assist you and your client for their individual matter. Conducting local court stakeholder meetings to support victim sector networking, information sharing and referral pathways. Promoting the Fundamental Principles of Justice for Victims of Crime in Queensland. Program locations Officers are located in the Cairns, Ipswich, Rockhampton and Townsville courthouses. You can phone or email Victim Assist for information on other court support services available in Queensland if your client is attending court at a courthouse outside these areas.     10.20 Victims of crime and the role of Victim Assist Queensland Purpose This procedure outlines the obligations of Child Safety staff under the Victims of Crime Assistance Act 2009 when working with children, families and carers who may have been injured as a result of an act of violence. It outlines the process for advising relevant persons about Victim Assist Queensland, the administrator of Queensland Government's assistance scheme for victims of crime, which assists the recovery of victims who have been injured as a result of an act of violence. Key steps 1. Respond to victims of crime 2. Provide information to a victim of crime 3. Make an application to Victim Assist Queensland Standards 1. Parents, children, staff members and approved carers are informed of the role of Victim Assist Queensland and provided with appropriate information in a timely manner. 2. Transition to adulthood planning processes consider making an application to Victim Assist Queensland and includes engagement with the young person to plan strategies and actions to manage any funds granted. Victim Assist Queensland is part of the Queensland Government’s Department of Justice and Attorney-General. This booklet has been written by Victim Assist Queensland for you, the victim of crime, and your friends and family who may have been directly or indirectly affected by a violent crime. Violent crimes are not just offences like assault, robbery and murder. Violent crimes also include sexual assault or abuse, stalking and kidnapping, death caused by dangerous driving and violence that happens at home or in your family. In this booklet you will find information on support available to you, including information on where to go for counselling and legal support. You will also find information on your rights as a victim of crime and how you may be able to apply for financial assistance from Victim Assist Queensland to help cover the costs of your recovery.     Issue 16 Dear Colleagues It is with a sense of accomplishment that I announce we have reached the end of a long process to produce the new JP and Cdec handbooks. Since delivery, we have been busily preparing and dispatching copies of the handbook to meet your orders, and it is gratifying to see how popular they are. I want to thank you all for your patience while we worked through the process, as well as for the wonderful feedback many of you have provided. The concept of having loose leaf pages will prove worthwhile in time when updates to the handbooks are required. The new handbooks will be a valuable tool for years to come in your important community role. Also, we will continue to provide timely updates through Technical Bulletins on any relevant change. Recently, I received a copy of a JP Handbook from 1927 which outlined the powers and duties at the time for JPs in Queensland. It makes for interesting reading and highlighted how much things have changed. This handbook will be added to other memorabilia to be displayed at JP Branch. If you have anything that you think may also be historical to the role and would like to donate, please contact us to discuss. Also, this edition of the JP Bulletin contains information about advance health directives for mental health and witnessing Title Registry forms for “off the plan” purchase. With the release of both new handbooks and the continuing expansion of the volunteer JPs in the Community Program, this is truly an exciting time to be a JP or Cdec in Queensland.

    Legal Assistance Strategy and Funding Legal Assistance Strategy and Funding 1 | P a g e Introduction The Special Taskforce Report into Domestic And Family Violence in Queensland, “Not Now, Not Ever – Putting an End to Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland” (The Bryce Report) tabled 140 recommendations for change to the way Queensland responds to and reduces incidents of domestic and family violence. The Queensland Government has endorsed all recommendations with the Department of Justice and Attorney General (DJAG) being assigned responsibility for implementing 40, including recommendation 116, which states: The Department of Justice and Attorney-General identifies opportunities to streamline systems for engagement of interpreters for civil domestic and family violence court proceedings to ensure best practice. In April 2015, senior representatives of DJAG formed a Whole of Government Interpreter Working Group (the working group), following the 2015 Queensland State Election and acceptance of all 140 recommendations by the Palaszczuk Government. The working group is jointly chaired by Victim Assist Queensland and the Strategic Policy unit of DJAG. Membership includes senior representation from Courts, Victims Assist Queensland, Legal Aid Queensland, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Queensland Police Service, Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Youth Justice, Courts Innovation Program and the Public Safety Business Agency.     Domestic and Family Violence Implementation Council Council Implementation Violence and Family Domestic domestic and family violence Implementation Council – progress report – 1 dec 2016 – 30 nov 2017 progress report progress 2016 – 2017 Chair’s foreword It is a privilege and pleasure to present the Domestic and Family Violence Implementation Council’s progress report for the period 1 December 2016 to 30 November 2017. This is the first progress report the Council has issued since the Premier, the Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, appointed me as Chair of the Council. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of my predecessor, the Honourable Quentin Bryce AD CVO, who chaired the Council from its inception and also led the Special Taskforce on Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland. Ms Bryce’s contribution represents a turning point in the way Queensland has approached this issue and the Special Taskforce’s report, Not Now, Not Ever: Putting an end to domestic and family violence in Queensland, is a landmark report at a national level. I am honoured to help continue the work she began. The 12 months covered by this report have seen ongoing progress in the implementation of domestic and family violence reforms in Queensland, and continued efforts by the Queensland community to draw attention to and address the issue. This is important and significant progress, however, domestic and family violence remains a tragic reality in Queensland life. Victims, their families and our communities continue to suffer. During the period this report covers, more Queenslanders lost their lives to domestic and family violence.
