THE OLD MAN AND THE SPRINT YEARLING SALE SEASON The Week in Review by T.D. Thornton CONCLUDES WITH The final chapters have yet to be penned in Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect)'s book, but it's safe to say the 7-year-old FASIG-TIPTON OCTOBER sprinter is in the autumn of his career. He's a closer who has excelled in a division where out-and-out front-end speed often dominates, he's run in three consecutive GI Breeders' Cup Sprints that have each drawn as "loaded" affairs won by the eventual Eclipse Award champ, and he'll seek his first Breeders' Cup win in start number four over a host track (Keeneland) whose main-track profile has been tilted toward forwardly placed runners during both of its 2020 meets. Nevertheless, trainer Ron Moquett wouldn't trade horses or places with anyone leading up to the Nov. 7 Sprint. Sunday morning at , Whitmore went a half mile in :46.80 (1/76) in his final serious breeze before the Breeders' Cup. Cont. p4

IN TDN EUROPE TODAY SUBJECTIVIST LANDS THE G1 PRIX ROYAL OAK Newtown Paddocks | Fasig-Tipton photo Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) earned his first Group 1 win in the Prix Royal Oak at ParisLongchamp on Sunday. Click or by Jessica Martini tap here to go straight to TDN Europe. LEXINGTON, KY - The curtain comes down on a most unusual yearling sales season with the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Sale which begins its four-day run in Lexington Monday at 10 a.m. The auction will be following up on a record-setting 2019 renewal which saw new high marks for average and--from its largest-ever catalogue--gross, and will be held over four days for the fourth straight year as it continues to build its reputation as a must-attend auction for both buyers and sellers. AThis sale has been so good to us almost since we=ve been doing business here,@ said consignor Peter O=Callaghan of Woods Edge Farm. AIt=s a great savior for one that misses its window at Keeneland, whether it doesn=t quite make the cut at Keeneland and then does well in the meantime and comes back here, it can stand up well and get sold. For a horse that misses his date for some other reason, it=s proved to be a great outlet for them. So I love this sale. I absolutely have no fears of bringing any nice horse here, whether it be an expensive foal or a homebred.@ On a chilly, overcast day at Newtown Paddocks Sunday, O=Callaghan said traffic has been good at the barns through two days of showing. Whitmore in the Vanderbilt post parade this summer | Sarah Andrew "He's just a cool dude. He's very consistent, and I'm expecting good things out of him," Moquett said in a post-workout video interview posted by the Kentucky Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association. "We've always got a lot of pressure when Whitmore runs because a lot of people love him and follow him, and we're kind of into that. So we want to put on a good show, and we want it more for Whitmore than we do for anything." Whitmore carries the colors of a partnership between Robert LaPenta, Head of Plains Partners, LLC, and Moquett. But he also shoulders the appreciative interest of admirers who like a good "throwback" campaigner--a reliable, road-tripping stalwart good for six to eight starts annually who hits the board more often than not (14-11-3 from 37 lifetime starts) while bankrolling $3.2 million in purse earnings. If Whitmore finally breaks through and wins the Sprint (he's been third, second, and eighth in his previous attempts), the victory would come years and one day after he broke his maiden at first asking at Churchill, winning by a gaudy 7 1/4 lengths at 15-1 odds. Whitmore doesn't often crack double digits on the tote board these days. The only other times he's gone off at that high a price were in the 2015 GI Kentucky Derby (30-1) and in his 2017 and 2019 Breeders' Cup Sprints (20-1 and 19-1). And outside of his beginning-career route attempts on the Triple Crown trail and the one-turn 2019 GI Cigar Mile, Moquett has kept Whitmore at his sweet spot between six and seven furlongs. Moquett believes part of Whitmore's staying power is attributable to his running style. Closing sprinters, he said, "come from off the pace, and they're not as fatigued at the end of a race where a lot of injuries can occur." Whitmore began his 7-year-old season with a second and two wins at Oaklawn Park. The COVID-19 pandemic contributed to a layoff until July 25 at Saratoga, where he ran into an absolute buzz saw of a winner named Volatile (Violence), who has since been retired with a hairline fracture. In that six-furlong GI Vanderbilt H., Volatile was allowed to get away with an unpressured first opening quarter mile in :23.46, but then ripped home through a final quarter in :22.94, the fastest in the race's history. In a four-horse field while conceding two pounds to the winner, Whitmore was disadvantaged by the way the race unfolded, yet he still closed well enough to earn second, 1 1/4 lengths behind Volatile.

Ron Moquett | Coady "That's the slowest first quarter for a Grade I [sprint] I've ever seen, and he still made up ground and ran a really good race," Moquett said. Next up was a seventh-place try in the Saratoga slop over seven furlongs in the Aug. 29 GI Forego S. Cont. p6 TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 6 OF 14 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • OCTOBER 26, 2020

That race was run in a pelting rainstorm that made it a throwout for a number of competitors. Whitmore then took aim at the GII Phoenix Oct. 2 at Keeneland, in which he uncorked a six-wide bid off the turn against the grain of a speed-conducive track and lost a head bob for show, checking in fourth. "It's hard to win at Keeneland [with a closing sprinter]," Moquett said. "I was a little disappointed with the race. I wasn't disappointed with him. I thought a lot of his races this year have been where if the pace was good enough, he could come get 'em. But being a closing sprinter, we are always concerned [with] pace scenarios. "I thought that that was how the track was playing, that weekend especially," Moquett continued. "It was just kind of an odd deal, but my horse came back happy and I know that if the right [pace] scenario comes up, he can beat those kind of horses with ease. If the wrong scenario comes up, he can be a victim of the pace." Whitmore's fourth Sprint bid isn't a Breeders' Cup record. Another venerable gelding, Kona Gold, ran in five of them between 1998 and 2002, winning the 2000 edition. Four other horses (Perfect Drift, Better Talk Now, California Flag, and Obviously) also competed in five Breeders' Cup events each. "There is no correct recipe for a Sprint winner. I've seen 3-year-olds win it. I've seen 8-year-olds win it," Moquett said, adding that for Whitmore, "it's always about who he's run against. He's pretty much the same. "When we ran against Roy H [{More Than Ready}, in 2017 and '18] we were running against a two-time [Sprint] winner and the world's fastest horse at the time. And [Whitmore] ran his eyeballs out," Moquett continued. "Then we came back and ran against Mitole [{Eskendereya}, in 2019], and in my mind, he definitely was one of the best we've seen in awhile. So it's almost like, 'What are the caliber of the horses we're going to be chasing on [Breeders' Cup] day, and are there a couple of the good ones who can go fast enough for us to come get them?'" If not, there's always the prospect of another campaign for Whitmore at age eight. "With him, he gets to write his own book," Moquett said. "If he comes [out of the Sprint] and says he wants to go out and run and play and have fun, then I'm going to let him. If he ever acts like he's not interested or shows a sign of wear and tear, then he'll get to go and live happily ever after. He owes us nothing, so we only want what he wants."

Tonahutu turned up the pressure past a :46.20 half and drew within a neck as Maxim Rate rolled up three wide approaching the lane. That trio separated from the remainder after turning for home, but Maxim Rate and Umberto Rispoli took charge into the final furlong and never looked back from there. Longshot Zee Drop finished well to get second money over Tonahutu, while Raymundo=s Secret faded to fourth.

"She was always a very good filly, won her first time out and then she just plateaued a little bit as a 3-year-old, so we gave her some time off," said winning trainer Simon Callaghan. "Thankfully the owners were really patient with her and that really helped her develop. I think she definitely is a better filly now, but I honestly think there's more scope for improvement. Obviously a very exciting filly for the future. I'm thinking the [GI] Matriarch at Del Mar [for her next start]. That was actually our initial plan. After her last race I sat down with all the owners and that was the plan. She came out of her last race so well so I said, 'To be honest, we kinda need to run this filly because she is doing great.' Thankfully it worked out. It was a great win today."

“Biddy Duke showed tremendous gameness late in taking Saturday’s Grade 3, Senator Ken Maddy Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

Breaking like a shot from her number two post position, Biddy Duke out-footed Jo Jo Air to the far turn and had a one-length advantage turning for home. With a host of pursuers, led by “Jo Jo” set to pounce a furlong out, Biddy Duke, ... simply would not be denied while hand-ridden late.”

GLOBAL APPEAL AT TATTS AUTUMN SALE SUBJECTIVIST TOO STRONG The Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale has become a IN THE ROYAL OAK key attraction for stables around the world looking to bolster their quality, and the latest renewal takes place at Park Paddocks in Newmarket from Monday through Thursday. Demonstrating the global impact of the sale are 2020 Grade/Group 1-winning graduates River Boyne (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) and Fierce Impact (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), who have this year taken top-level contests in the U.S. and Australia. Chris Waller selected Imaging (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) from the Juddmonte consignment last year and he rewarded his trainer with a victory in the G2 Ajax S. Down Under in March. This year=s Derby favourite English King (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) goes through the ring as a wildcard (lot 1153A) and he is sure to appeal to the Australian market, or any other that relishes a quality middle-distance type. Cont. p7 Subjectivist | Scoop Dyga Set against the gloom of a damp autumn day, Sunday=s G1 Prix Royal-Oak belonged to the Brits as Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) made all under Joe Fanning to take the ParisLongchamp IN TDN AMERICA TODAY feature. Always content on the front end as he had been when YEARLING SALES SEASON ENDS AT FASIG OCTOBER registering a 15-length success in similarly testing conditions in The Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Sale begins its four-day run in Goodwood=s G3 March S. At the line, the second Group 1 winner of the weekend in France for the stable and sire had two lengths to spare over fellow 3-year- old and 11-10 favourite Valia (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), with the 2018 winner Holdthasigreen (Fr) (Hold That Tiger) clinging gamely to third place 2 1/2 lengths behind. AHe was very brave and we knew he would enjoy the ground, so I was determined to ride him that way,@ jockey Joe Fanning explained. AHe was a little bit keen going to post, but once he got in front he pricked his ears and was fine. I was trying to save a bit throughout and when I got to the straight he started to lug a bit left with me and I was worried he=d throw it away. He=s never done it before, but has a bent front shoe so whether that has something to do with it, I=m not sure. He=s a tough stayer and he=s improving.@ A day after the stable=s similarly cheap purchase Gear Up (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) had prevailed in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, Subjectivist was rounding off the current season in style for the Middleham trainer who has made no secret of his love of the stayers= program. G1 Prix Royal Oak Cont. from p1 While he has had to endure near-misses in most of Britain=s major ACup@ events in recent times, this latest recruit is unexposed over marathon trips and could be one to provide some more heydays in the category in 2021. Runner-up in the Listed Stonehenge S. over a mile at Salisbury last August, the bay has progressed with each start since moving to middle distances as a 3-year-old and on his third outing captured the 11-furlong Listed Glasgow S. at Hamilton July 16. Third in the G3 Gordon S. at Goodwood July 30 and seventh in York=s G2 Great Voltigeur S. Not someone who usually lets the opinions of outsiders affect OZZIE'S BELIEF IN SIR his perspective, Kheir admits there were a few times when he wondered whether he had pulled the right rein to secure the DRAGONET VINDICATED son of Camelot in a reported seven-figure deal. "When you buy a horse, especially when you get it off Coolmore and Aidan O'Brien, you start to have your doubts. People tell you that they wouldn't sell you a horse that is any good. You have taken him from the best trainer, why would you do that? All of the experts start telling you he can't win," he said. "You start to half believe it a bit and the pressure starts to mount. When we won, there was enjoyment, but with that came a lot of relief. This horse hadn't won for something like 535 days. It was a long time between wins, so to crack a win on his first start for us, in a Cox Plate, it was just phenomenal." It's easy to characterise an investor like Kheir as someone who looks to just cast his net wide to purchase the best tried Spring Carnival prospects. But to say that is to do a disservice to the rigour he applies to his selection process, and the work of the team he utilises does in order to identify horses and purchase Ozzie Kheir (right) pictured pre-COVID | TDN AusNZ them. Kheir has done plenty of big thoroughbred deals over the past five years, and has celebrated success as an owner in many of Australia's biggest races, including the G1 Caulfield Cup through Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) last week, but the win of Sir Dragonet in his own navy blue and pale yellow spots, was as much about vindication as anything else. Kheir, who heads up the successful property development business Resimax Group, had pursued Sir Dragonet for some time before eventually getting a deal done with global giant Coolmore to bring him to Australia. "I had approached my friends and said 'let’s buy this horse, I love him, let’s win a Melbourne Cup and on the way, we will have a crack at the Cox Plate,'" Kheir told TDN AusNZ.
