Bellingham and Surrounding Area

History Bellingham, pronounced ‘Bellinjum’, has been settled since ancient times. The outline of a Romano-British fort can still be seen on The Riding farm. In medieval times, the water from St Cuthbert’s Well (known today as Cuddy’s Well) is said to have miraculously cured a girl’s paralysed hand. Until the Union of the Crowns in 1603, the North Tyne was a lawless place, sometimes part of , sometimes of , but subservient to neither. This was the land of the Border Reivers, who stole sheep and cattle from their neighbours across the border.

In the 13th century, the leading family was the de Bellinghams, but they were it seems ousted by the Charltons and retreated to Levens Hall near Kendal. The Charltons were the largest of the four ‘graynes’, the others being Robsons, Milburns and Dodds. Hesleyside Hall, on the south bank of the North Tyne River, has been occupied by the Charlton family since 1343.

Local Attractions Bellingham is now a peaceful place. It stands on the North Tyne River, just above the confluence with the Rede, and on the edge of the National Park. There is a good range of shops and services, as well as three pubs, a hotel, two schools and three churches. Local attractions include Water and Hadrian’s Wall. The surrounding hills are part of the National Park. In and around Bellingham are good walks along the river and on the fells. Hareshaw Linn is a 2 hour walk, but it’s worth it! It is number 8 out of 10 most beautiful walks in the country.
