The Guide Contents Welcome to The Guide –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Welcome to the BMW Championship / Western Open Records & Statistics Guide for 2020. This is the 31st edition of a guide compiled, and originally limited in circulation, since 1990, when the WGA’s own Western Open Media Guide was confined to a few pages. There are three main sections: 1. A detailed record book, covering the 116 playings of the championship under all its names from 1899 onward. Contents for the following 56 pages are below left. A new category covers course records set in the championship since 1975 (page 49). 2. A year-by-year championship history, updated and corrected from the 2019 edition. Details of playing statistics (driving distance, fairways hit, greens in regulation, putts, sand saves) for all players are featured for the last four tournaments. The results for 2016 through 2019 are thus in two-page spreads. 3. An alphabetical register of contestants. Research continues on players from the early days with similar names, with many of the inconsistencies cleared up for this edition. Since 1990’s first edition, focusing on the championship’s modern-day Chicago era, interest in golf records and statistics, the Western Open included, has grown. Neglect in keeping any but the most rudimentary records for the Western until it returned to Chicago in 1962, and often for years after, meant the records in this Guide, inspired by Bill Inglish’s original Masters Tournament record book, had to be compiled independently. The records and statistics in this Guide are derived from an exclusive database of over 14,820 player reports, gleaned from an extensive file of contemporary newspaper and magazine reports compiled on trips to 20 cities, from Buffalo to Memphis to Los Angeles. The growth of online newspaper archives has been a boon. Some records for players with only one round listed in a given year may never be found. Newspapers often printed abbreviated scoring agate on also-rans, notably when the Western attracted over 200 players. Some 3.96 percent of the overall database entries, all from 1908 to 1948, are in that category. The search continues. Entries from 1949 forward have been crosschecked against the WGA’s original reports, along with records from the PGA of America’s Tournament Bureau, subsequently the Tournament Players Division, and its successor, the PGA Tour. (Highlights of the PGA Tour’s player statistics, originally compiled by Byron Ferguson and now punched into the ShotLink computer system, are included for the past 23 years.) This is the most complete record of the BMW / Western Open, and perhaps any golf championship. We invite your thoughts on corrections and improvements to the Guide, and hope you find it useful. MISGAGRAM Volume 121 – December 2014 www.misga.org President’s Message Jim Beisler is to be commended for the efforts he has made during last year as president of the MISGA BOARD. He had several tough issues to be resolved that he handled in a very professional manner. Now, as I look forward, 2015 is going to be a challenging year. Eastern shore divisions have experienced a substantial drop off in membership and attendance at MISGA functions. Piney Branch and Argyle Country Clubs have decided not to participate in MISGA for 2015. Division 6 membership is down 10% (71) in 2014, but did add Timbers at Troy and Hollow Creek Golf Clubs as new members of MISGA. The Eastern shore divisions were provided suggestions by the Board concerning their issues. Which they stated they would take under consideration. In addition we are in discussion with three other clubs about becoming members in MISGA. They are Links of Gettysburg, Waverly Woods and Waynesboro Golf Courses. I look forward to working with the BOARD and the DIVISIONS in the coming year. Met Open Championship Presented by Callaway 103rdAugust 21 - 23, 2018 Wykagyl Country Club History of the Met Open Championship Presented by Callaway From its inception in 1905 through the 1940 renewal, the Met Open was considered one of the most prestigious events in golf, won by the likes of Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, Johnny Farrell, Tommy Armour, Paul Runyan, Byron Nelson, and Craig Wood, in addition to the brothers Alex and Macdonald Smith (who together captured seven Met Opens, with Alex winning a record four times). The second edition of the championship was hosted and sponsored by Hollywood Golf Club, when George Low won in 1906. After an eight-year hiatus overlapping World War II, the Met Open became more of a regional championship, won by many of the top local club professionals, among them Claude Harmon, Jimmy Wright, Jim Albus, David Glenz, Bobby Heins and Darrell Kestner, not to mention such storied amateurs as Chet Sanok, Jerry Courville Sr., George Zahringer III, Jim McGovern, Johnson Wagner, and Andrew Svoboda. The purse was raised to a record $150,000 in 2007, giving the championship added importance. In 2015 the MGA celebrated a major milestone in marking the championship’s 100th playing, won by Ben Polland at Winged Foot Golf Club. In 2017, The MGA welcomed a new Championship Partner, Callaway Golf. Callaway Golf is the presenting sponsor of the Met Open Championship. Eligibility The competition is open to golfers who are: 1. Past MGA Open Champions. 2. PGA Members in good standing in the Metropolitan and New Jersey PGA Sections.

  • Playing Hickory Golf While You Piece Together a Vintage Set
CHAPTER 10 cmyk 4/11/08 5:13 PM Page 165 Chapter Title CHAPTER 10 Questions And Answers About Hickory Golf Q: How much does it cost to get started in hickory golf? A: You can purchase inexpensive hickory clubs for as little as $25 each. Obviously, these are not likely to be of a premium quality and will probably require work to make them playable. At Classic Golf, we offer fully restored Tom Stewart irons for about $150 each with a one-year warranty on the shafts against breakage. Our restored woods are about $250 each for the premium examples. So, a ten-club set with two woods would run $1,700. A 14-club set would be $2,300. This compares favorably with the purchase of a premium modern 14-club set where your irons are $800, your driver is $400, fairway wood $200, two wedges at $125 each, hybrid at $150, and a putter at $200 for a total of $2,000. Q: Can a beginner or high handicap golfer play hickory golf? A: Yes. That is how it was done 100 years ago! It can be an advantage starting golf with clubs that require a more precise swing. Q: Are there reproduction clubs available and are they allowed in hickory tournaments? A: Reproduction clubs are available from Tad Moore, Barry Kerr, and Louisville Golf. Every tournament has its own set of rules. The National Hickory Championship allows reproductions because pre-1900 clubs are so difficult to find and are very expensive. At the present time there are ample supplies of vintage clubs available for play, but this could change with the increasing popularity of hickory golf.

  • Four Seasons Resort: Aviara Course 1
If There are enough uncertainties in a game of golf with- out being compelled to speculate on the varying qualities of the ball. 11 A Haskell Ball is just about the surest thing in golf, and its popularity is largely due to the fact that its use does inspire confidence. The player soon learns its possibilities and particularly relies on the long true Haskell flight to help the score. 11 From the rubber core to the tough gutta percha cover the Haskell is perfectly made, and likewise differently made from any other ball.
