This institution, in collaboration with the University of Bologna, has a whole collateral branch dedicated to the video games, as they can be considered a recreational activity somehow related to movies. This collection of video games conceptually starts from the ones that are strictly connected to movies, and then expands to a wider class of video games. A video game could be related with a movie either as its direct inspiration, its prequel or collateral plot, or also be created as a direct consequence of that movie. The expansion of the collection available in the Library includes a historical set of video games. In this paper we discuss the historical perspective of the relationship between technology and video games, providinga complete historical view of the video games by means of the titles and the consoles available in the Library. Several dedicated consoles are still in working conditions and could be used by the visitors of the Library. I. Super Mario 64 Was Proclaimed by Many As "The Greatest Video Game
The People Behind Mario: When Hiroshi Yamauchi, president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. (NCL), hired a young art student as an apprentice in 1980, he had no idea that he was changing video games forever. That young apprentice was none other than the highly revered Shigeru Miyamoto, the man behind Mario. Miyamoto provided the inspiration for each Mario game Nintendo produces, as he still does today, with the trite exception of the unrelated “Mario-based” games produced by other companies. Just between the years 1985 and 1991, Miyamoto produced eight Mario games that went on to collectively sell 70 million copies. By record industry standards, Miyamoto had gone 70 times platinum in a brief six years. When the Nintendo chairman Gunpei Yokoi was assigned to oversee Miyamoto when he was first hired, Yokoi complained that “he knows nothing about video games” (Game Over 106). It turned out that the young apprentice knew more about video games than Yokoi, or anyone else in the world, ever could. Miyamoto’s Nintendo group, “R&D4,” had the assignment to come up with “the most imaginative video games ever” (Game Over 49), and they did just that. No one disagrees when they hear that "Shigeru is to video gaming what John Lennon is to Music!" (www.nintendoland.com) As soon as Miyamoto and Mario entered the scene, America, Japan, and the rest of the world had become totally engrossed in “Mario Mania.” Before delving deeply into the character that made Nintendo a success, we must first take a look at Nintendo, and its leader, Hiroshi Yamauchi. -

However, in a work that concerns Economics, even an industry dedicated solely to entertainment like that one of video game can be an interesting challenge. Moreover, each thesis should aim to develop researches on new topics and to process the results. What better way to do this if not by exploring overlooked fields of research? The idea of a work involving Nintendo company as the main topic was among the possible research options, and choosing it as the theme to conclude the Master Degree was the goal I had proposed to myself for a long time. The involvement of the subject of innovation comes from the belief of its importance; since these two themes, innovation and Nintendo, could be easily combined, it was natural to create this work in some way dual. Making available to any reader topics so far from usual ones, without sacrificing the academic character of the paper, was both a challenge and a target. -

The Coming Breakthrough in Virtual Reality Did you have a View-Master when you were young? Do you want to try an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive headset? These virtual reality devices show how far the technology has come. We haven’t reached the promise of a fully immersive world, as conveyed in movies such as Tron, Lawnmower Man, The Matrix, and Inception, and of course Star Trek’s holodeck, but we are getting closer. Many believe that virtual reality is on the verge of a popular breakthrough. As a human factors engineer, I find the current state of virtual reality, exemplified by products such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, to be very exciting and full of potential. In this article, I’ll introduce some of the technologies behind these products. Subsequent articles will look at virtual and augmented reality applications in entertainment, industry, and medicine, as well as at the future of virtual reality, focusing on how virtual reality is changing the paradigm of user interface design. For a user interface specialist like myself, this in an exhilarating time. Virtual and Augmented Reality Two technologies are actually on the verge of a breakthrough. The first is virtual reality (VR), which “replicates an environment that simulates a physical presence in places in the real world or an imagined world, allowing the user to interact in that world. Virtual realities artificially create sensory experiences, which can include sight, touch, hearing, and smell" (Virtual reality, 2016). Objects in the virtual world appear three dimensional and life sized, and are viewed from the perspective of the user as he or she moves among them. -

Among the few global Japanese home entertainment companies, Nintendo truly represents video game culture, and it is a well-known brand throughout the world. Our basic strategy is the expansion of the gaming population, which is to encourage as many people in the world as possible, regardless of age, gender or gaming experience, to embrace and enjoy playing video games. In 2004, Nintendo launched a handheld game device called Nintendo DS with dual screens including one touch screen, and has been expanding the diversity of consumers who enjoy video games by releasing applicable software titles in a range of genres that went beyond the then-current definition of games. In addition, Nintendo launched a home console game system called Wii in 2006, which lowered the threshold for people to play games by providing more intuitive gaming experiences with motion controllers. Nintendo offers home entertainment that enables family members and friends to have fun together in their living room and continuously strives to create an environment where everybody can enjoy video games.
