November 3 FROM THE PASTOR’ S DESK Parish General Last month our metropolis hosted a presentation by Bill Assembly Marianes called “Igniting the Flame Effective Church Model: A Culture of True Christian Stewardship and November 4 Generosity.” I wish you all could have been there with Orthodoxy on Tap at me and Gia Harrigan, our Parish Council Stewardship Yoleni’s in Providence, Liaison, because it was both challenging and inspiring! 6:45pm—9pm Bill put the question of stewardship and generosity towards God and our neighbors in the context of November 16 something we ask for at every Divine liturgy: “That the Parish Work Day remaining time of our life may be without pain, blameless and peaceful, and for a good account before November 17 the awesome judgment seat of Christ.” On that day, Stewardship Sunday Christ will ask us, “What did you do with my Church under your watch given all the gifts I gave you?” This November 23 question challenges us to evaluate our performance Christmas Bazaar and soberly. Bill showed us actual statistics that do not Greek Food Fair, reflect well on this evaluation: 47% of adults who were 10am—6pm raised in the Orthodox Church have left; millennials (aged 18-29) are over 2.8 times more likely than their

PAGE 2 THE SAINT SPYRIDON VOICE parents to be unaffiliated with the Church; only 21% of those who remained in the Greek Orthodox attend church services regularly; since 1993 the number of yearly baptisms has decreased by over 30% and weddings have decreased by over 50%; Orthodox Christians are in the top third of the US population for annual income and in the bottom third of giving to their church. The point is, we are not giving our people sufficient reason to stay in the Church. We haven’t given them to experience the great blessings of being a disciple of Christ, with the hope and joy that only He can give. But Bill did not dwell on the negative facts, he spent much more time giving a vision for parish health and many ways to realize that vision. His key message was, to have an effective parish you need: 1. Engaged disciples of Jesus Christ who fully understand and live their faith 2. A culture of true stewardship and generosity 3. Clarity as to WHY the parish exists, supported by consensus vision and a plan to achieve the vision. A parish that excels at generosity and stewardship does 15 things well. However, Bill encouraged us to consider these things first: • Tithing = Giving in proportion to personal income. • Engagement = the leaders and active reach out and welcome all members to engage • Small groups - up to 10 people - gathering to explore spiritual topics and help each other deal with personal life issues. Over the coming months we will be utilizing this model of True Christian Stewardship and Generosity to get us all more educated and engaged as disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ and member of our St. Spyridon Church Family. God’s riches have no limit. Stewardship means we tap into His riches by learning how to offer ourselves more fully to Him. Please bring your Spiritual Stewardship Pledge Card (page 17) and Financial Stewardship Pledge Card (page 19) on Stewardship Sunday, November 17.

Yours in Christ,

NOVEMBER 2019 PAGE 3 PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Dear St. Spyridon Family, November is the month that we think about all we have been given and to be thankful. We on the Parish Council want to express our thanks to ALL those whom we may have forgotten, to ALL those we need to remember to thank more, and to say thank you to the most important figure of ALL, our Lord. Our second largest fundraiser of the year, the Christmas Bazaar and Greek Food Fair is approaching quickly, and we ask that everyone reach out to family and friends to come and enjoy what will be a great start of the Holiday season. There will be specially packaged pastries that can be purchased as gifts for Thanksgiving or as part of dessert following your meal, we will be an expanding hours into dinner time with our amazing souvlaki chef during our festival, Mr. George Zarkadas has been planning with the Bazaar committee over the past few months. Most importantly, the Christmas Bazaar will be an opportunity to unite as a community. Last year was a great example of how many from a diverse group of families came together and gave their special talent to be part of something greater. Let us build on that, and prepare for the seasons of thankfulness and hope, as we prepare for one of the greatest moments in history, Christmas. With Love of our Lord, Parish Council President Dr. Cosmo Haralambidis

SERVICE TIMES Sunday Winter Hours, Weekday Services Matins 9 am Divine Liturgy 10 am

The Saint Spyridon Voice is a monthly publication of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, 390 Thames St., Newport, RI 02840 NOVEMBER 2019 PAGE 5 PAGE 6 THE SAINT SPYRIDON VOICE A F RIEND WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES ON A PILGRIMAGE TO MOUNT A THOS from Tears of Repentance: True Stories from a Greek Taxicab by Athanasios Katigas Some who were traveling with us (on a boat to the Mount Athos) came towards Savva’s wheelchair to speak to him, pat him on the back, embrace him, show him compassion, and to tell him to endure this cross with patience. Savva was elated, answering with the stereotypical Athonite response, “Good paradise” (may we find paradise).” And when Savva is happy everyone around him becomes happy. He has been a quadriplegic for 55 years, and I never heard him once – not even once – murmur, grumble, or even complain about this great cross. In order to appreciate his nobility of soul, I will share one of our quiet moments as I was pushing his wheelchair on the rough rocky roads and enjoying the majestic serenity of Mount Athos. Savva turned and said to me, “Thanasi, can I tell you something?” “Whatever you like, my good buddy. What is it?” “God must have loved me very much to have made me this way.” When I first heard these words, the truth is that I couldn’t fathom what he was trying to say. As I kept walking and pushing Savva along, I contemplated some more, I became deeply touched and moved to tears by his profound and God-inspired words, the precious words of a paralytic that we all need to pay very close attention to: “Thanasi, God must have loved me very much to have made me this way.” What nobility of soul, what understanding, what depth, what content, what prayer! I stepped away from the wheelchair and wandered off some distance, wanting to weep for my sinfulness in private, and to say, “My God! Forgive me for my ungratefulness!” How can I possibly forget his words the night someone stole his brand-new wheelchair from the porch of his home, shortly after we had purchased it? When he realized how upset I was, he told me, “Thanasi, don’t worry. The person who took it probably needed it much more than I do, so may God Bless him.” What a masterful way of facing an adverse situation! He immediately attached his mind to a holy thought so he wouldn’t risk losing the peace of God within him. When a person comes to the fullness of the stature of Christ, this is precisely how he faces similar trials and adverse situations. I have heard many sermons in the course of my spiritual life, but none compare to these words from the mouth of my friend, Savva, the paralytic. These profound words have remained indelibly inscribed in my heart and they will be with me for a lifetime. NOVEMBER 2019 PAGE 7

Synaxis of the Archangel Michael & the other Bodiless Powers: Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Salaphiel, Jegudiel, & Barachiel November 8th All the Angels, according to the Apostle Paul, are ministering spirits, - sent forth to minister to them who shall be heirs of salvation - (Heb. 1:14). God set them as overseers of every nation and people, and guides to that which is profitable (Deut. 32:8); and while one Angel is appointed to oversee each nation as a whole, one is also appointed to protect each Christian individually. In a word, they have served God in so many ways for our benefit, that the pages of Holy Scripture are filled with the histories thereof. It is for these reasons that the Orthodox , wisely honoring these divine ministers, our protectors and guardians, celebrates today the present Synaxis that is, our coming together in assembly for their common feast to chant their praises, especially for the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, who are mentioned in the Scriptures by name. The name Michael means "Who is like God?" and Gabriel means "God is mighty." The number of Angels is not defined in the divine Scriptures, but all of them are divided into nine orders which are called Thrones, Cherubim, Seraphim, Dominions, Powers, Authorities, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels.

Nektarius the Wonderworker, Metropolitan of Pentapolis November 9th Saint Nektarius was born in Selyvria of Thrace on October 1, 1846. Through his eloquent sermons his unwearying labours to educate fitting men for the priesthood, his generous alms deeds despite his own poverty, and the holiness, meekness, and fatherly love that were manifest in him, he became a shining light and a spiritual guide to many. He became the protector of all Aegina, through his prayers delivering the island from drought, healing the sick, and casting out demons. He worked many wonders in life, and also an innumerable multitude of have been wrought after his repose in 1920 through his holy , which for many years remained incorrupt. There is hardly a malady that has not been cured through his prayers; but Saint Nektarius is especially renowned for his healings of cancer for sufferers in all parts of the world. He was officially recognized as a saint by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of in 1961. John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople November 13th This greatest and most beloved of all Christian orators was born in Antioch the Great in the year 344 or 347. Saint John was surnamed Chrysostom ("Golden- mouth") because of his eloquence. He made exhaustive commentaries on the divine Scriptures and was the author of more works than any other Church Father, leaving us complete commentaries on the Book of Genesis, the Gospels of Saints Matthew and John, the Acts, and all the Epistles of Saint Paul. His extant works are 1,447 sermons and 240 epistles. Twenty-two teachers of the Church have written homilies of praise in his honor. Besides his feasts today and on January 27, he is celebrated as one of the Three Hierarchs on January 30, together with Saint Basil the Great and Saint Gregory the Theologian.

PAGE 16 THE SAINT SPYRIDON VOICE The Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple November 21st According to the tradition of the Church, the Theotokos was brought to the Temple at three years of age, where she was consecrated to God and spent her days until she was fourteen or fifteen years old; and then, as a mature maiden, by the common counsel of the priests (since her parents had reposed some three years before), she was betrothed to Joseph. Kontakion of Entry of the Theotokos, Fourth Tone Today, the most pure temple of the Savior, the precious bridal chamber and Virgin, the sacred treasure of God, enters the house of the Lord, bringing the grace of the Divine Spirit. The Angels of God praise her. She is the heavenly tabernacle. Catherine the Great Martyr of Alexandria November 25th Saint Catherine, who was from Alexandria, was the daughter of Constas (or Cestus). She was an exceedingly beautiful maiden, most chaste, and illustrious in wealth, lineage, and learning. By her steadfast understanding, she utterly vanquished the passionate and unbridled soul of Maximinus, the tyrant of Alexandria; and by her eloquence, she stopped the mouths of the so-called philosophers who had been gathered to dispute with her. She was crowned with the crown of martyrdom in the year 305. Her holy relics were taken by Angels to the holy mountain of Sinai, where they were discovered many years later; the famous of Saint Catherine was originally dedicated to the Holy Transfiguration of the Lord and the Burning Bush, but later was dedicated to Saint Catherine. According to the ancient usage, Saints Catherine and Mercurius were celebrated on the 24th of this month, whereas the holy Hieromartyrs Clement of and Peter of Alexandria were celebrated on the 25th. The dates of the feasts of these Saints were interchanged at the request of the Church and Monastery of Mount Sinai, so that the festival of Saint Catherine, their patron, might be celebrated more festively together with the Apodosis of the Feast of the Entry of the Theotokos. The Slavic Churches, however, commemorate these Saints on their original dates. NOVEMBER 2019 PAGE 17
