Stan Sutherland, President “WHO ARE YOU?” A WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP WITH CHARLES Nine of us met up in the Athenaeum for a week in July to hone our watercolour painting skills with Charles Sluga. We had come from , Canberra, the Mid NSW Coast, Yackandandah and Albury Wodonga to revitalise our interest and techniques with watercolour. There’s no doubt that it is one of the most testing painting mediums, but for that very reason, one of the most rewarding when everything works out accordingly! This particular five day workshop involved the techniques behind composition and the use of watercolour paints, using different surfaces and concentrating on developing our own concepts and themes and discovering who we are as painters. It takes a lot of courage to do this - the medium can be quite unforgiving unlike oils which are able to be more more manipulated and at a later stage of the painting, but it was fantastic to have five days to spend time with fellow artists, concentrate on regaining old skills which hadn’t been used for years, digging out the equipment and dusting it off, finding the paint dried in old tubes of paint and the pleasure of buying new ones! The Athenaeum is a great place for these classes and Charles a very inspirational teacher. He is incredibly generous with his advice, tips and critiquing, and was quick to show by example with lightning quick watercolours to highlight his points. I am also delighted to hear that he will be experimenting with oils soon and so hopefully there will be classes available in that medium as well. In the meantime ,at the workshop we worked hard, all produced some inspiring pieces, pushed our techniques and were able to take a far more pragmatic and educated view at what makes a picture work, why it should and how we can continue to improve our work in the future. What fun! I can think of very few nicer things to do on a cold winter’s day than to get inspired, slosh paint and water about and revel in new and refined techniques to create a picture with such great company. It was so inspiring and I will ensure that my watercolour paints get used and don’t sit around drying out, and that the moths don’t have the opportunity to have a crack at my expensive paintbrushes - grrrrr...! Thanks Charles - it was terrific. Perhaps you could consider running some life classes when the weather warms up and some plein air classes - those haystacks are calling! Ali Pockley
