It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Clinical TMS Society. For me, the TMS Society meeting has been the highlight of the year for its fascinating content as well as a place to connect with colleagues. The annual meeting committee has been working hard for many months to build on this tradition and add to it in a way that reflects the exciting growth in the field of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. Our focus this year has been to make the annual meeting even more valuable to our Society members. First priority was to obtain CME credit for the meeting, which was successfully accomplished through a partnership with the Mayo Clinic. We brought even more content this year, expanding into two very full days of programing. We sought to address head on issues of relevance to members such as a comparison of the US FDA cleared devices, current clinical standards, as well as a look to the future of TMS. Sessions have evolved to include a variety of formats, including panel discussions meant to engage attendees, “breakout sessions” to focus on specific areas of interest, and scientific presentations from leaders in the field. This year brings the first time we have offered content specifically targeted to TMS technicians (and new physicians), as there is no other venue for ongoing technician education. We are pleased to see that members have responded to this as almost one quarter of our attendees are technicians. The faculty this year is excellent and comes from five continents. A very special highlight this year is our opening session with Professor Anthony Barker, FIET, FIPEM who was the first of the modern era to stimulate the brain with high powered electromagnets. Our Friday dinner address will be delivered by preeminent neuromodulation researcher Sarah Hollingsworth Lisanby MD, formerly chair of psychiatry at Duke and now at the National Institutes of Health. Many thanks go out to our sponsors from industry without whom the cost of this meeting to our members would have been much greater. Their unrestricted support has allowed us to bring to you a superior meeting experience, and we are truly appreciative. Planning this meeting spanned the transition from our beloved Nina Cudney, MS to PESC (Professional Exchange Service Corporation), our new professional managers, who have jumped right in to make the changeover go smoothly. I also want to thank my fellow committee members who have each brought special talents and many hours of effort to putting this meeting together, especially Michelle Cochran and Rick Pitch for their guidance from previous year’s meetings, Paul Croarkin for handling the poster session and CME, Jay Gunkelman for handling sponsors, exhibitors, and meeting logistics, our President, Richard Bermudes, MD for board leadership, and lastly my wife, Paige, who put in countless hours to make it all happen. We hope this meeting serves to advance and improve our individual skills and knowledge, as well as advance the field of TMS into the future.

Transcranial brain stimulation is increasingly used as a tool for brain research and a therapeutic intervention in neurology and psychiatry. His lab works closely with neuroscientists and clinicians to translate novel brain stimulation technology and optimize existing techniques. His lab is involved in the integration of transcranial brain stimulation with imaging modalities such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG), as well as the evaluation of the safety of device-device interactions, for example between transcranial stimulators and implants like deep-brain stimulation (DBS) systems. He also collaborates on projects related to circuit design and control of electrical energy converters.

TMS allows for modulation of brain circuitry with excellent anatomical resolution. TMS allows for measurement of neuroplasticity, and he has used this to study motor system function. Dr. Press has also studied the brain regions showing decreased perfusion in Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Daniel Z. Press received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
