Sarah was born at Lamberhurst in 1774. The births of their eleven children indicates that they lived initially at Tudely and later Rotherfield in Sussex. The 1841 census has Timothy (70 year-old yeoman) and Sarah (65) living at Jessamine Lodge Dengate in Rotherfield with a Frances Hickmott (11) and Mary Dudeney (3). The 1851 census has Timothy (83) and Sarah (76) living on Strawberry Hill in Frant. Timothy was described as a farmer of 277 acres employing 15 labourers. They had living with them a 19 year-old servant, Ann Seamour, who was born at Wadhurst. Both Timothy and Sarah died at Frant in 1855 and 1858 respectively. Their children were: Richard (1796, Tudeley & Capel), Dunster (1798, Tudeley & Capel), Mary Ann (1801-03), Sophia (1803), Henry (1805, Rotherfield), Mary Ann (1807, Rotherfield), Eliza (1809, Rotherfield), Amelia (1811, Rotherfield), Elizabeth (1813-14, Rotherfield) , Sarah (1815, Rotherfield), Harriett (1818, Rotherfield) 1800s 12 Oct 1803 Sarah HICKMOTH/John WHITEBREAD West Peckham igi 16 Apr 1808 Samuel HICKMOTT/Ann BURFIELD West Peckham igi [09 Apr 1809 John HICKMOTT/Ann KEMSLEY botp Maidstone igi] (Wit: W. Mitchell, John File). The UK censuses indicate that John was born at Chatham in Kent in around 1788. The LDS index shows that a John Hickmott, son of John and Jane was baptized at Chatham on 29 June 1789 (no record of a marriage of John and Jane there). The index also shows that Ann Kemsley, daughter of Robert and Alice, was baptized at East Malling on 5 February 1791. The 1841 census shows an Ann Hickmott (50) at Giblits Hole East Malling with Ann Harry (45) and her children Eliza (15), Ellen (10) and Amila (8). A William (30), Susan (19), Mary (17), Elizabeth (14), Henry (12) and John (8) were all together on Well Street in East Malling. The 1851 census has a John (63 year-old agricultural labourer born in Kent) and Ann Hickmott (61, East Malling) living in East Malling. John (73, Chatham) and Ann (72, East Malling) were on Well Street in East Malling in 1861 next door to their daughter-in-law Rosina Hickmott (31 year-old married gardener born at West Malling) and her three children: Mary A. (5, Ryarsh), Frederick (2, East Malling) and Emily (5m, East Malling). Rosina was the wife of Henry. We think John and Ann both died at East Malling, he in 1865 and she in 1868. Known children: William (1810, Ditton), Maria (1813, Ditton), Marianne (1814, Ditton), Caroline (1819, Ditton), Susannah (1822, East Malling), Mary Ann (1824, East Malling), Elizabeth (1826, East Malling), Elizabeth (1829, East Malling), Henry (1829, East Malling), John (1832, East Malling). [04 Apr 1811 John HICKMOTT/Susanna YEOMANS Maidstone igi] (Wit: T and M Waterman). Baptised at East Malling in 1785, John was the only son of John Hickmott and Mary Nixson (who were married at East Malling in 1780). Susanna was also born at East Malling, in 1793, the daughter of James and Susannah Yeomans nee Godden (married at east Malling in 1791). The LDS IGI indicates that John and Susannah had two children baptized at East Malling – James (1813) and Mary Ann (1817). The 1841 census shows a John (50 year- old farmer) and Susannah Hickmott (25) living at East Malling. The 1851 census shows John (66) and Susan (58) living at the Rocks at East Malling. The 1861 census shows John (76 year-old carpenter born at East Malling) and Susannah (68, East Malling) still living at the Rocks in East Malling with their unmarried son James (47, East Malling). The UK National Probate Index shows that John Hickmott, late of the Rocks in East Malling and husband of Susanna, died at East Malling on 5 September 1863 (probate was paid to Susanna). At the time of the 1871 census, Susanna, then aged 78, was an inmate at the East Peckham Union House. She died in 1879, aged 86 years. Others present were: Thomas Hickmott (15), Ann Hickmott (15), Fanny Hickmott (11) and Mary Evans (20). The 1851 census shows a William (49 year-old agricultural labourer born at Wadhurst) and Mary Hickmott (51, Haverford Wales) living at Mereworth with their grandson George Grice (8, Mereworth).

  • East Malling Hotline Feb March 2021
East Malling Hotline February / March 2021 News from your Local Lib Dem Team in East Malling East Malling Centre Community Have your say on 20mph scheme Larder - there to support you for residential roads Huge thanks to the team at the East Malling Centre who have continued to do a fabulous job supporting residents during this latest lockdown. If you are in need of support, or if you wish to volunteer, please contact Liz Simpson. Trudy writes: After many years of resisting 20mph Schemes, KCC is now favouring them on the large scale used in many towns and cities. So I have used £3,500 of my Councillors Community Fund for KCC to prepare a scheme for consultation to cover East and West Malling and Larkfield. The idea is that all residential roads should have a 20 mph limit, marked only by road signs and markings on the road surface. KCC say the main through routes of Winterfield Lane, Clare Lane, Mill Street and New Road (between the King and Queen and Beech Road) could also be restricted to 20 mph. However they suggest added features such as ramps, flashing signs or chicanes would be needed, for which funding would have to be found. Consultation on a 30mph limit for New Road between Beech Road and A20 is expected soon. So, all estate roads in Bradbourne Park, Clare Park, Stepstile, and Winterfield estates would have 20mph limits. The northern/adopted end of Blacklands, Middle Mill, Stickens Lane,Upper Mill, Cottenham Close , Vigor Close, Church Walk, The Trudy has given £1,750 to the East Malling Grange, Rocks Close, Gillett’s Lane and Four Acres Community Centre from her Councillors would also be covered by 20 mph restrictions.

The rise from Wouldham to the North Downs Way hardly qualifies as a hindrance, but demands a little respect. Notes taken: April 2017 The start and finish is at Borstal Church (ME1 3HQ) on Borstal Street near the junction with Manor Road. Mins.* OS Miles 1 Leaving Borstal Church turn right down the main road 732 668 (Borstal Street). 2 Turn right and walk down the length of Manor Road, past the children’s playground and the open space near the bottom. 3 6 At the end, by Beacon Boatyard, turn left. 4 Where the driveway to Medway Bridge Marina turns away right, instead take the path forking up to the left. 5 8 Carry straight on, ignoring the waymarked left-turn. 6 9 Follow the path as it turns right and left, bringing you directly alongside the river on your right. 7 11 Go under the motorway bridge, and walk along a little path which emerges directly opposite, still heading on, parallel to the river, between fences on both sides.
