Free Student Field Trips with Bus Transportation

The DIA provides free field trips, free transportation and access to K-12 students across each year.

21,795 Oakland County residents participated in no-cost school field trips to the DIA. Complimentary transportation was provided to all groups.

The DIA provides partnerships for field trip experiences and teacher support through the following commitments to Oakland County partners:

Birmingham Public Schools – Teachers participated in Visual Thinking Strategies workshops and coaching.

Farmington Public Schools – All students from Lanigan Elementary visited for Social-Emotional Learning themed field trips and faculty participated in Visual Thinking Strategies training.

Student Services and Curriculum Development

DIA education staff consult with teachers prior to field trips to ensure that students have meaningful, educational experiences that connect to classroom learning.

Gallery teachers have expanded the repertoire of hands-on engagement strategies to further enhance all guided experiences

The DIA launched two new STEAM adventures, utilizing the Detroit Industry Murals in Rivera Court for grades 5-12 and in collaboration with DIA Conservation scientists in the galleries for grades 6-12.

A new guided field trip program was launched in order to support Social-Emotional Learning This program was designed to meet the SEL needs of schools and make connections between SEL themes and art.

This year the DIA expanded the Meaning Through Art-Making program with 3rd – 12th graders. DIA studio instructors led learner-centered gallery tours and hands-on artmaking.

Teachers from Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties met in January, March, and June to advise DIA staff and provide input on professional development workshops and online curriculum resources. There was an intentional focus to engage the Teacher Advisory Group around issues of inclusivity, diversity, equity, and access.

In the fall of 2019, three new educators (one from each county) joined the current Teacher Advisory Group cohort for a 2-year term in order to bring new perspectives to the team while allowing experienced TAG teachers to mentor new members.

The DIA hosted “Homeschool Afternoons” at the museum in February and June featuring art-making and guided tours.

The DIA hosted the following free customized professional development days:

• Clarkston 4th grade teachers and art teachers visited the museum to plan field trips with DIA staff in January.

• Teachers at Vandenberg World Cultures Academy in Southfield participated in a Visual Thinking Strategies workshop and coaching in March.

• Teachers from Bloomfield Hills Schools visited the DIA for an Art-Making workshop in May.

• In collaboration with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra the DIA developed Look. Listen. Connect - a multimedia concert combining music with art from the DIA’s collection in April. The program was part of the DSO’s live educational concert series, facilitated by DSO musicians with DIA education programs staff and webcast to classrooms nationwide.

• The DIA hosted the Association of Independent Schools (AIMS) for a Visual Thinking Strategies workshop in March.

• In August, the DIA hosted a meeting for Farmington Lanigan Elementary School, which included an overview of education programs available at the museum. Tours featuring both VTS and Shaping Identity followed by a debrief activity.

• The DIA hosted a meeting for Farmington School District Early Childhood Educators in August, featuring tours with a focus on engagement activities for early learners.

• The DIA hosted the Royal Oak Schools Retreat, which included a tour and overview of education programs in August.

• A VTS workshop for Cranbrook Brookside teachers was held at their school in August.

• In August, the DIA hosted Social Studies educators from Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. Grade-level-appropriate tours were offered, demonstrating how the DIA’s collection can support the Michigan Social Studies curriculum. Opportunities for further professional development were discussed.

• In December, the DIA presented education programs available for tri-county educators to Oakland Schools World Language educators, with a focus on how the DIA can support the world language curriculum.

• An Essential Questions workshop was customized to meet the needs of the Holocaust Memorial Center with key installations in December.

Senior Program-Thursdays at the Museum

The DIA’s Thursdays at the Museum program, provides tri-county residents 55+ with a different museum experience each Thursday of the month including free group transportation and concluding with coffee reception.

In 2019, the DIA continued to attract new audiences for the Thursdays at the Museum by broadening the menu of programs. A selection of special offerings is highlighted below:

Art Bingo: seniors learned about the DIA’s collection through an art-themed bingo event.

America Let’s Exercise: participants enjoyed a local senior dance group and presentation focused on healthy living and exercise habits for older adults.

In the Garden: seniors attended a special talk exploring the hidden meanings behind images of flowers, plants, and gardens in some of the DIA’s favorite works of art.

Mother’s Day Music: attendees enjoyed a performance featuring jazz, Latin, vocal, contemporary, and classical sounds.

Due to the success of these new programs, the DIA will continue to incorporate special offerings alongside the regular rotation of private film screenings, tours of galleries and exhibitions, and hands-on artmaking opportunities. From August through December, 50 interviews were held with Thursdays at the Museum program participants. Results will be analyzed and will impact future program planning.

The DIA welcomed 87 senior groups to the museum with 2,431 residents participating in Thursday’s at the Museum. All groups were offered complimentary bus transportation.

In March, the DIA hosted the Gazette Senior Expo featuring DIA senior offerings and other regional resources with nearly 600 attendees.

Behind the Seen

Presented by trained DIA teaching volunteers, Behind the Seen art talks bring insight about the DIA's collection from the museum to the community. Talks last up to one hour and are available to adult civic and social groups, libraries, senior centers, and other community-accessible locations in Oakland County.

Community Collaborations with Local Arts Organizations and Cities, Townships and Villages

Inside|Out

Through partnerships with more than 120 tri-county community organizations the DIA’s Inside|Out program brings high quality art reproductions to engage residents with art in the places where they live, work and play.

In the Spring of 2019, the DIA installed Inside|Out reproductions in Downtown Clawson and Downtown Lake Orion. Both communities sponsored community events related to their installations including walking tours in both Clawson & Lake Orion led by DIA Director Salvador Salort-Pons.

Summer Inside|Out partners included Oakland County Municipal Campus, and Oakland Community College’s campuses in Highland Lakes, Auburn Hills, Orchard Ridge, Southfield and Royal Oak.

The DIA also launched a partnership with the Michigan Secretary of State to expand Inside|Out to indoor locations. Reproductions were installed in the following Oakland County Secretary of State branch offices:

Partners in Public Art

The DIA collaborates with communities, nonprofit organizations, and municipalities in Oakland County to design and create meaningful works of public art.

In partnership with the Downtown Development Authority in Clawson the DIA created a mural representing the Clawson Community.

The DIA continues to work with the Lake Orion Downtown Development Authority and the Orion Art Center to create a mural in downtown Lake Orion.

Oakland Community College

The DIA and Oakland Community College collaborate on programming to raise visibility and awareness for both institutions, build new audiences, and increase appreciation for the relevance of the arts and continued education in everyday lives.

Highlights of a newly developed multi-year partnership agreement include Visual Thinking Strategy training for faculty, family programming at the Royal Oak Campus, and OCC family days at the museum.

In partnership with Oakland Community College, Eisenhower Dance and Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings the DIA presented a series of free family concerts at the OCC Royal Oak campus. Featuring original contemporary dance and live music, the programs combined live music, dance and storytelling to create a unique family experience. Each performance was following by an opportunity for audience members to have a hands-on with the instruments in a special Musical Petting Zoo from McCourt Music and Meet The Dancers in a short participatory exercise.

The October performance was based on Peter and the Wolf, with narration by Stephen Henderson and Little Red Riding Hood was presented in November with music by Jordyn Davis, illustrations by Tom Knight and narration by Mahogany Jones.

The DIA provides drop-in artmaking workshops at fairs and festivals throughout Oakland County.

Community Group Artmaking Program

The DIA partners with local social service to provide artmaking experiences to groups through the Community Group Program.

Sessions begin with a Visual Thinking tour in the galleries followed by an art-making experience in the studio.

In 2019, the DIA began partnering with tri-county veteran navigators, to offer several Open Houses for Veterans, including themed tours, hands-on artmaking, a slideshow of art projects done at the DIA with the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center, and sharing of local resources for veterans.

The August Veteran Open House resulted in a collaborative 'slat book,' which was featured in the 11th Annual Community Group Art Exhibition, and at the December open house, veterans helped the DIA create over 100 handmade bowls that were donated to the Detroit Empty Bowls project to benefit Cass Community Social Services.

Community Group Art Exhibition

The DIA hosts an annual art exhibition for participants in the Community Group Program.

An opening reception was held for the 11th Annual Community Group Art Exhibition in December.

The event, open to artists and their guests, included a slideshow, refreshments, and an opportunity for participants to speak about their work as well as view the exhibition. 182 artists created work installed in the Family Room Gallery at the DIA featuring works from the following Oakland County groups:

Jewish Community Center

In partnership with the Jewish Community Center, the DIA hosts the annual Jewish Book Fair.

The DIA hosted the author Mary Gabriel, author of 9th Street Women. Over 300 guests attended the event and participated in a guided gallery tours following the author talk. Art Beats & Eats

The DIA provides programming support for the DIA Kids’ Stage at Royal Oak’s Arts, Beats, and Eats.

The DIA Kids’ Stage featured an exciting and diverse roster of performances throughout the festival weekend, ranging from puppetry to magic, storytelling to juggling. Canvas Pontiac

In partnership with the Pontiac Downtown Business Association and the City of Pontiac, the DIA supports Canvas Pontiac’s efforts to bring art and culture to the community.

The DIA also provided jurying and consulting services. Alzheimer’s Association of Michigan

The Minds on Art partnership program between the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Michigan Alzheimer's Association features museum gallery talks, hands-on artmaking in the DIA Studio, and facilitated discussions at their locations.

Participants living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias and their care partners attended a free five-week session. Activities provided the opportunity for individuals in the early and mid-stages of the disease to create meaningful experiences through artmaking in the studio and gallery tours.

New this year, participants were invited to bring family members for a year-end celebration luncheon with museum tours, an overview of the Minds on Art program and complimentary transportation.

Scholastic Art Awards

The Detroit Film Theater presents the award ceremony for the 2019 Southeastern Michigan Region of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition.

The DIA partnered with Detroit’s College for Creative Studies to coordinate the event, attended by approximately 2,000 students, family members, and guests over two days.

Deaf C.A.N. & OUCares

The DIA collaborates with Deaf Community Advocacy Network and Center for Autism Outreach Services to create experiences and resources for visitors who are hearing impaired visitors or with autism spectrum disorders.

Dear C.A.N. & OUCares staff collaborated with DIA staff by facilitating focus groups, interviews, and surveys to inform the creation of in-gallery learning resources, guided experiences, and general building accessibility including training for front line personnel.

Dutton Farms Superfest

In partnership with Dutton Farms the DIA presents Superfest, the nation’s longest running disability focused film festival, featuring films created by people with disabilities and about the disability experience.

The event featured a discussion panel about disability employment and representation in film. All film presented were fully captioned and included audio description.

County Leaders Events

County leaders are invited to attend receptions twice a year to highlight new exhibitions and gallery openings.

Support for Community Groups and Schools

The DIA supports schools and community groups in their fundraising efforts through donations of Detroit Film Theatre tickets.

Additional Outreach & Partnerships

The DIA partnered throughout 2019 with various cultural non-profits in Oakland County to present programs celebrating Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese culture. Partnerships included the I Wan Jan Puppet Theater with two performances in July, a Korean Autumn Festival in the fall.

Curatorial Lectures were provided to Oakland University Department of Art and History and the Senior Men’s Club of Birmingham.

Curatorial Tours were provided to Princeton Club of Michigan and Congregation Shaarey Zedek.

Transportation was provided for Interfaith Leadership Council of Metro Detroit’s Religious Diversities Journeys after school enrichment program including Beverly Hills Academy, Abbott Middle School, Anderson Middle School, and Orchard Lake Middle School.

Transportation was also provided to Community Housing Network at Jefferson Oaks, Oakland Community College, and Bharatiya Temple for a museum visit and Lanigan Elementary for a teacher professional development workshop.
