THE TWO WORKED TOGETHER ONCE BEFORE ON A CUBS-REDS GAME IN THE EARLY 1990S FOR THE BASEBALL NETWORK. THEY BECAME THE FOURTH FATHER SON BROADCAST TEAM IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL (JOE AND JOHN BUCK, HARRY, SKIP AND CHIP CARAY AND HARRY AND TODD KALAS). CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Intensity is always Tony Cingrani's specialty Cingrani has one speed, and that's going all out By C. Trent Rosecrans GOODYEAR, ARIZ. — Tony Cingrani gets angry every time he gives up a hit. It doesn’t matter if it’s a spring training exhibition game – like the one he will start Saturday against the Colorado Rockies – or against the St. Louis Cardinals. As the Reds’ second-year starter sees it, it’s his job to not give up any hits and if he gives up a hit, he didn’t do his job. That makes him angry – and like a famous fictional character, you wouldn’t like him when he’s angry. “That’s how I get myself fired up. I need to throw harder, so I try to get super angry and throw it harder,” Cingrani said. “I’m not turning green – I’m trying to scare somebody and see what happens.” Cingrani’s intensity even turned into a meme among Reds fans, with the “Cingrani Face” becoming synonymous with an intense, scary mug. Cingrani said he saw that, and even chuckles quietly about it.

NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 43, No. 2, Feb. 27, 2004) NCBWA President’s Message By NCBWA President Jeff Hurd Before basketball’s March Madness descends upon us, it is a little amazing that some Division I baseball teams are approaching the 20-game mark (notably Kansas at 9-7-1 through Feb. 23 and Cal Poly at 12- 4 prior to its Feb. 25-29 games). Before you know it, the NCAA Regionals will be upon us. This absolutely is one of the busiest but most intriguing times of the college sports year with as many as 10-12 sports occurring simultaneously from baseball to men’s volleyball to golf to indoor track to gosh- knows-what. It’s also refreshing to welcome the initial 2004 NCAA Division II NCBWA poll to this month’s newsletter and to see some of the baseball teams from cooler weather regions migrating south for the annual ritual of spring break baseball. The incessant pings of the aluminum bats remind us that the sights and smells of springtime and conference baseball cannot be far off; enjoy and sneak out of the arenas when time permits for some great diamond activity. Sincerely, Jeff Hurd - NCBWA President - Western Athletic Conference NCBWA Division I Players of Week The NCBWA Division I National Players of the Week are into their third week of the 2004 season. Nominees for the aw2ard are taken from Conference players of the week and announced on Tuesday. NCBWA Vice-President Mike Montoro of Southern Miss ([email protected]) coordinates the weekly awards.

The Boston Red Sox Monday, May 14, 2018 * The Boston Globe The bullpen bailed out Drew Pomeranz, and the Red Sox won the series Peter Abraham TORONTO — Red Sox manager Alex Cora knew before Sunday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays that he would not have Craig Kimbrel and Carson Smith available out of the bullpen. Kimbrel had pitched in three of the previous four games, Smith in five of the last six. And the Sox don’t have a scheduled day off until May 21. What was a small problem became a big one when starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz couldn’t get an out in the fifth inning and was pulled after 103 extra-tedious pitches. The Sox had a one-run lead and limited means to protect it. “You find a way,” said Matt Barnes, one of the relievers who helped the Red Sox close out a 5-3 victory. “That’s really it. You find a way.” Hector Velazquez, Barnes, Heath Hembree, and Joe Kelly combined for five shutout innings as the Sox finished 6-4 on their 11-day road trip, winning three of the last four. For Cora, it was a game he will remember. “Managing at the big league level, it’s not that easy, because there are certain days that there’s nothing you can do,” he said. “You want to match up, and you have to trust your guys.” The Sox return home tied with the Yankees atop the division but well positioned to make a move. Starting Monday, they play 19 of their next 26 games at Fenway Park.
