So are the movers ready to lift Josh Smith like an old sofa and carry him to the door next? Not so fast, Ferry tells Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution : “He’s a really good player,” Ferry said. “I love his ability to pass the ball. I love his ability to make game-changing plays defensively. I love his competitiveness. If I was out there playing, I would want Josh on my team.” But does Smith want to be here? He wasn’t available for comment Tuesday, but Ferry said he has met with him twice. “He’s excited for next season,” he said. “We haven’t really gone in that direction with him [on roster plans]. But we’ve talked about how we’re going to play. We’ve talked about other players. His ideas, my ideas. I’m just trying to establish a relationship.” Smith has only one year left on his contract. While he reportedly has softened his stance on a trade request, he publicly has given no indication yet that he’s looking to re-sign here. He is coming off the best season of his career (18.8 points, 9.6 rebounds), taking on more responsibility after Al Horford’s injury, even with the occasional “Josh” moment. -

Dynamic Player Significance (DPS): a New Comprehensive Basketball Statistic
Dynamic Player Significance (DPS): A new comprehensive basketball statistic David Hill Media Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA [email protected] 15.071 (The Analytics Edge) Final Project May 13, 2013 Abstract Dynamic player significance is a new basketball metric designed to measure each NBA player's importance, or significance, to his franchise. This metric attempts to clearly define each player's role on the team and how it fits with the team's identity. Its key aspect is that it is influenced by the on-court identity of each franchise, which is defined as the collection of factors that contribute most to a win by a given team. These factors differ for every NBA team. Therefore, two players with completely identical stats/skillsets, but different teams, will most likely have different significance values. Alternatively, if a player is traded from one team to another, his significance will differ on the new team even if his production remains constant. Hence, dynamic player significance. Here, I have broken down the components of the model and explored three case studies that clearly show how teams’ identities deviate. Additionally, player evaluations have been explored to show tendencies in the model across multiple conditions. The proposed statistic could help inform team personnel decisions and coaching strategies, in addition to gauging player effectiveness. Motivation In the NBA, one of the most important things for any team to establish is an identity. These are the traits that define a team. Often, identity is the major factor that governs all transactions, whether the team is looking for players, hiring a coach, or filling front office positions. -

Can Michael Beasley Fully Regain the Trust of Miami Heat Fans?
Can Michael Beasley Fully Regain The Trust Of Miami Heat Fans? Author : Daniel Carpio The 2013-14 NBA season is not a month old yet and Michael Beasley has found himself in new yet familiar territory. He is back with the Miami Heat where he played his first two seasons as the second overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft. However, he didn't return as one of the league's best players. This is Beasley's last real chance to prove that he belongs in the NBA after various drug related incidents and inconsistent play cut short his tenures with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Phoenix Suns. With a more diminished role in Miami, Beasley has seen little action until recently as injuries to Udonis Haslem along with a cold hitting Ray Allen have forced Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra to dig deeper into his bench. Beasley has not wasted the opportunity so far as he has able to be productive on offense in limited minutes. While this may help him gain trust with Miami's coaching staff, regaining the trust of a fan base that expected more of him during his first stint could be another story. When Beasley was drafted by the Heat it was thought that he would a scoring option to compliment Dwyane Wade and at the time Shawn Marion. Once Marion was traded by Miami Beasley was expected to pick up the offensive load, but he was too inconsistent on the floor and too enamored with marijuana off the court. That not only made the Heat organization sour on him, but the fans soured on him as well. -
