Moon’s Phases and Tides Moon Phases Half of the Moon is always lit up by the sun. As the Moon orbits the Earth, we see different parts of the lighted area. From Earth, the lit portion we see of the moon waxes (grows) and wanes (shrinks). The revolution of the Moon around the Earth makes the Moon look as if it is changing shape in the sky The Moon passes through four major shapes during a cycle that repeats itself every 29.5 days. The phases always follow one another in the same order: New moon Waxing Crescent First quarter Waxing Gibbous Full moon Waning Gibbous Third (last) Quarter Waning Crescent • IF LIT FROM THE RIGHT, IT IS WAXING OR GROWING • IF DARKENING FROM THE RIGHT, IT IS WANING (SHRINKING) Tides • The Moon's gravitational pull on the Earth cause the seas and oceans to rise and fall in an endless cycle of low and high tides. • Much of the Earth's shoreline life depends on the tides. – Crabs, starfish, mussels, barnacles, etc. – Tides caused by the Moon • The Earth's tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon. • The Earth bulges slightly both toward and away from the Moon. -As the Earth rotates daily, the bulges move across the Earth. • The moon pulls strongly on the water on the side of Earth closest to the moon, causing the water to bulge. • It also pulls less strongly on Earth and on the water on the far side of Earth, which results in tides. What causes tides? • Tides are the rise and fall of ocean water. -

I mean by this the ongoing activity of research, teaching, and learning; the forging of new collaborations; and the development of promising initiatives. Stellar magnetic activity is an important factor in the formation and evolution of exoplanets. Magnetic phenomena like stellar flares, coronal mass ejections, and high- energy emission affect the exoplanetary atmosphere and its mass loss over time. One major question is whether the magnetic evolution of exoplanet host stars is the same as for stars without planets; tidal and magnetic interactions of a star and its close-in planets may play a role in this. Stellar magnetic activity also shapes our ability to detect exoplanets with different methods in the first place, and therefore we need to understand it properly to derive an accurate estimate of the existing exoplanet population. I will review recent theoretical and observational results, as well as outline some avenues for future progress. 1 Introduction Stellar magnetic activity is an ubiquitous phenomenon in cool stars. These stars operate a magnetic dynamo that is fueled by stellar rotation and produces highly structured magnetic fields; in the case of stars with a radiative core and a convective outer envelope (spectral type mid-F to early-M), this is an αΩ dynamo, while fully convective stars (mid-M and later) operate a different kind of dynamo, possibly a turbulent or α2 dynamo. These magnetic fields manifest themselves observationally in a variety of phenomena. -

Petabytes of data col- lected from satellite instruments aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) provide a high-cadence, high-resolution, and many-channeled dataset of solar phenomena. Several challenging deep learning problems may be derived from the data, including space weather forecasting (i.e., solar flares, solar energetic particles, and coronal mass ejections). This work introduces a software framework, FlareNet, for experimentation within these problems. FlareNet includes compo- nents for the downloading and management of SDO data, visualization, and rapid experimentation. The system architecture is built to enable collaboration between heliophysicists and machine learning researchers on the topics of image regres- sion, image classification, and image segmentation. We specifically highlight the problem of solar flare prediction and offer insights from preliminary experiments. 1 Introduction The violent release of solar magnetic energy – collectively referred to as “space weather" – is responsible for a variety of phenomena that can disrupt technological assets. In particular, solar flares (sudden brightenings of the solar corona) and coronal mass ejections (CMEs; the violent release of solar plasma) can disrupt long-distance communications, reduce Global Positioning System (GPS) accuracy, degrade satellites, and disrupt the power grid [5]. -

Solar and Space Physics: A Science for a Technological Society The 2013-2022 Decadal Survey in Solar and Space Physics Space Studies Board ∙ Division on Engineering & Physical Sciences ∙ August 2012 From the interior of the Sun, to the upper atmosphere and near-space environment of Earth, and outwards to a region far beyond Pluto where the Sun’s influence wanes, advances during the past decade in space physics and solar physics have yielded spectacular insights into the phenomena that affect our home in space. This report, the final product of a study requested by NASA and the National Science Foundation, presents a prioritized program of basic and applied research for 2013-2022 that will advance scientific understanding of the Sun, Sun- Earth connections and the origins of “space weather,” and the Sun’s interactions with other bodies in the solar system. The report includes recommendations directed for action by the study sponsors and by other federal agencies—especially NOAA, which is responsible for the day-to-day (“operational”) forecast of space weather. Lin1,2 the date of receipt and acceptance should be inserted later Abstract RHESSI measurements relevant to the fundamental processes of energy release and particle acceleration in flares are summarized. RHESSI's precise measurements of hard X-ray continuum spectra enable model-independent deconvolution to obtain the parent elec- tron spectrum. Taking into account the effects of albedo, these show that the low energy cut- < off to the electron power-law spectrum is typically ∼tens of keV, confirming that the accel- erated electrons contain a large fraction of the energy released in flares. RHESSI has detected a high coronal hard X-ray source that is filled with accelerated electrons whose energy den- sity is comparable to the magnetic-field energy density. This suggests an efficient conversion of energy, previously stored in the magnetic field, into the bulk acceleration of electrons. A new, collisionless (Hall) magnetic reconnection process has been identified through theory and simulations, and directly observed in space and in the laboratory; it should occur in the solar corona as well, with a reconnection rate fast enough for the energy release in flares. The reconnection process could result in the formation of multiple elongated magnetic islands, that then collapse to bulk-accelerate the electrons, rapidly enough to produce the observed hard X-ray emissions. RHESSI's pioneering γ-ray line imaging of energetic ions, revealing footpoints straddling a flare loop arcade, has provided strong evidence that ion acceleration is also related to magnetic reconnection. -

Journals and books abound with new findings on this most exciting subject. However, major problems could still not be solved. In this Reporter Talk I will try to describe these unresolved issues in context with our present knowledge. Coronal holes are associated with rapidly expanding open magnetic fields and the acceleration of the high-speed solar wind. This paper reviews measurements of the plasma properties in coronal holes and how these measurements are used to reveal details about the physical processes that heat the solar corona and accelerate the solar wind. It is still unknown to what extent the solar wind is fed by flux tubes that remain open (and are energized by footpoint-driven wave-like fluctuations), and to what extent much of the mass and energy is input intermittently from closed loops into the open-field regions. Evidence for both paradigms is summarized in this paper. Special emphasis is also given to spectroscopic and coronagraphic measurements that allow the highly dynamic non-equilibrium evolution of the plasma to be followed as the asymptotic conditions in interplanetary space are established in the extended corona. For example, the importance of kinetic plasma physics and turbulence in coronal holes has been affirmed by surprising measurements from the UVCS instrument on SOHO that heavy ions are heated to hundreds of times the temperatures of protons and electrons. -

Chapter 11 RADIO OBSERVATIONS OF CORONAL MASS EJECTIONS Angelos Vourlidas Solar Physics Branch, Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC [email protected] Abstract In this chapter we review the status of CME observations in radio wavelengths with an emphasis on imaging. It is an area of renewed interest since 1996 due to the upgrade of the Nancay radioheliograph in conjunction with the continu- ous coverage of the solar corona from the EIT and LASCO instruments aboard SOHO. Also covered are analyses of Nobeyama Radioheliograph data and spec- tral data from a plethora of spectrographs around the world. We will point out the shortcomings of the current instrumentation and the ways that FASR could contribute. A summary of the current understanding of the physical processes that are involved in the radio emission from CMEs will be given. Keywords: Sun: Corona, Sun: Coronal Mass Ejections, Sun:Radio 1. Coronal Mass Ejections 1.1 A Brief CME Primer A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is, by definition, the expulsion of coronal plasma and magnetic field entrained therein into the heliosphere. The event is detected in white light by Thompson scattering of the photospheric light by the coronal electrons in the ejected mass. The first CME was discovered on December 14, 1971 by the OSO-7 orbiting coronagraph (Tousey 1973) which recorded only a small number of events (Howard et al. 1975). Skylab ob- servations quickly followed and allowed the first study of CME properties ( Gosling et al. 1974).
