Sub Rosa

Question: If you are a pastor and someone comes to you in confession and says that they will definitely kill you the next day, can you tell somebody or not? Because it is intentional, so it is a sin, and they know they’re going to do it. Are you allowed to tell somebody?

Response: In Greek mythology the rose is the symbol of secrecy, because cupid gave a rose to Harpocrates, the god of silence, so that he would not reveal the secrets of Aphrodite (Roman – Venus), mother of cupid. This is actually the original reason why a secret admirer would send a woman roses. Also, banquet halls and other places where conversations and actions were desired to remain secret were decorated with roses to remind those present that the conversations and actions that occurred there were to remain secret. The original: “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” For this reason, confessionals were decorated with a rose atop to remind people that what was confessed was to remain a secret.

There are two different types of violations of the seal of confession: direct or indirect. A direct violation would be the betrayal of the penitent and their sin. An indirect violation of the seal of confession would create a suspicion or doubt and place the penitent in danger of betrayal or use knowledge to the harm of the penitent, for instance: 1) The confessor tells an authority figure to pay special attention to a specific person, 2) Removal from office based on confessional knowledge, 3) To change your demeanor towards a penitent, 4) To deny Holy Communion to a penitent, 5) To alter the penitent’s participation in the life of the parish, 6) To give a penance that causes suspicion, 7) Confessor says, “in a neighboring parish I heard . . .”, 8) The confessor says that a certain sin seems common, “boy, there are a lot of people who need to stop gossiping”.

The question arises: “If the penitent confesses a future sin, such as: I am going to kill you or someone else, is a future sin protected by the seal? The direct matter protected by the seal of confession are: all mortal sins and venial sins, future sins and putative sins. Thus, the seal of confession arises even in the case of a penitent confessing a future action – even murder. The priest cannot use any knowledge gained in the sacrament of penance. Not toward the priest’s benefit, the parish’s benefit – say he found out that an usher was stealing money from the Sunday collection –, or even for the sake of the benefit of the penitent. What is confessed in the Sacrament is inviolable – Nefas est (c. 983 §1)– under the rose of absolute secrecy.

The following is an explanation of the conditions contained in Our Lady's request regarding the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays of the Month. Confess and receive Holy Communion On February 15, 1926 the Child Jesus alone came to visit Sr. Lucia and asked if the devotion to the was being propagated. Sr. Lucia spoke of a difficulty some people have in confessing on the first Saturday, and asked if they might be allowed eight days in order to fulfill Our Lady's requests. Jesus answered: "Yes, even more time still, as long as they receive Me in the state of grace and have the intention of making reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary." Recite the Rosary Five decades of the Rosary may be recited at any time or place; yet, since one will be attending Mass in order to receive Holy Communion, a very desirable time and place would be before or after Mass in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Meditation on the mysteries according to one's capacity is an essential condition for praying the Rosary. Yet, involuntary distractions do not rob the Rosary of fruit if one is doing the best he can. "Keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary." The question is often asked: Does the meditation while reciting the Rosary fulfill this condition, or is there required an additional fifteen minutes of meditation? That an additional 15 minutes of meditation is required was recently confirmed by Sr. Lucia of Fatima. It is clear too from a statement by the first Bishop of Fatima. The last entry in the chronology of Fatima, published in the official Calendar of the Sanctuary for the year of 1940, and signed by Dom Jose Correia da Silva, the first Bishop of Fatima, gave a summary of Our Lady's requests concerning the Five First Saturdays. From that official statement in the Calendar of the Sanctuary, we read the Bishop's enumeration of the various items that pertain to the devotion of the five Saturdays: It consists in going to Confession, receiving Communion, reciting five decades of the Rosary and meditating for a quarter of an hour on the mysteries of the Rosary on the first Saturday of five consecutive months. The Confession may be made during the eight days preceding or following the first Saturday of each month, provided that Holy Communion be received in the state of grace. Should one forget to form the intention of making reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, it may be formed at the next Confession, occasion to go to confession being taken at the first opportunity.

We Are Living in a MARIAN AGE

There is a great need in our society for our children to be brought closer to Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Blessed Mother has appeared to many individuals with her plea to bring everyone to salvation.

Why aren’t we LISTENING.

In the final of Fatima, October 13, 1917, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel appeared in the sky holding the Brown . Sister Lucia said this is because, “She wishes everyone to wear it; it is the sign of consecration of Her Immaculate Heart”.

Lucia saw additional visions representing the mysteries of the Rosary; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel represented the Glorious mysteries.

The last appearance of Our Lady to Bernadette Soubirous was on the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

Our Lady of Good Help – October 1859 (The only approved apparitions in the US, Champion, WI, was on Dec. 8, 2010 The Feast of the Immaculate Conception.) Our Lady asked Adele Brise in these apparitions to teach children what they should know about salvation.

The little Brown Scapular Coloring Book, The Story, Miracles and the Rosary Prayer will teach children about the Brown Scapular and the benefits received by wearing it. In addition, children will learn how to pray the Holy Rosary Prayer. The Brown Scapular is Our Lady’s garment and protection, and St. Padre Pio called the Rosary, “the weapon”.

Each book includes a children’s size Brown Scapular and a Glow in the Dark Rosary. The little Brown Scapular Apostolate, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was formed to spread the devotion of the Brown Scapular to parishes, Catholic schools and anyone who has a heart for Jesus and the Blessed Mother. Presentations are available and volunteers are needed. $7.99
