The soil around Abbazia di Novacella is mainly granitic schist, created by ancient glaciers; and the vineyards are quite steep. In the Isarco Valley, vines do not live much longer than 30 years, and the yields are miniscule naturally, producing wines that are aromatic, fresh, and rich. Though it is one of the oldest in the world with over 850 years of winemaking experience, the cellar is entirely modern. Harvest is in Mid-October. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and lasts about 15 days. Malolactic fermentation and aging occur in 60 hl oak casks for 6 months. Massican 2015 Annia Massican is named after the coastal mountain range on the southern Italian peninsula in Campania. At Massican it is our pursuit and love of unique, memorable white wines; wines that we wish to share inspired by our roots in Italy, made in Napa Valley. Because the chardonnay component of this blend was so impacted by the drought, our flagship bottling in this vintage leans more towards our inspiration for Annia as a Friulian white wine, with tocai and ribolla playing a prominent role. The blend is 45% tocai friulano, 41% ribolla gialla, and 14%, chardonnay. This is a unique wine with a cult following – only 625 cases were produced.
