Even if the people involved were long gone before you were born, there’s still a sense that the actions of these people so many years ago might help define who you are today. Just as the new Southern bootleg film Lawless is derived from Matt Bondurant‘s 2008 novel The Wettest County in the World, Bondurant himself has created a story rooted in historical events involving his grandfather Jack and uncles Forrest and Howard. These Bondurant Brothers were the stuff of legend in Franklin County, Va. for staving off authorities to create a thriving moonshine business during the Prohibition. While Lawless graphically recounts the conniving violence and brutality that naturally came along with such successful criminal activities, it also delves into the nuances of the personal struggles of everyone involved. As his fictional portrayal of his family’s own part in bootlegging business hits theaters today (with Shia LaBeouf playing the author’s grandfather), Matt talks to Wrestling with Pop Culture about the differences between the novel and the film, the research that went into his book and how it feels to have discovered these notorious tales that preceded him.

    Sign In Sign-Up RETURN TO CINEMATREK HOME BONDURANT'S WETTEST COUNTY IS LAWLESS In 2008, Matt Bondurant's fictionalized true story of his families' moonshining background in Franklin County Virginia was published and hit the bookshelves. It became a best seller; a nice feat for a first time novelist. But the story had everything needed to stir the imagination of readers - defiance, love, courage, legend, evil, not-so-evil, heroes and villains. And though it embellished the facts a bit, it was nevertheless based on actual events. "The basics of this story are drawn from various family stories and anecdotes, newspaper headlines and articles and court transcripts..." Bondurant clarified. "However, this historical information does not help us fully understand the central players in this story, at least in terms of their situation or what their thoughts were; all involved are now deceased and little record exists. There are no letters, and my grandfather and his brothers did not keep diaries. My task in writing this book was to fill in the blank spaces of known record. There are family stories … and these memories and stories are vague, and often specious at best, mixed with several decades of rumor, gossip and myth." Matt continued "My intention was to reach the truth that lies beyond the poorly recorded and understood world of actualities." Brought in to direct the film was John Hillcoat whose recent interpretation of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" was both lauded for it's cinematic presentation, but scorned for deviations from the novel. To adapt the novel to the screen, he brought in Nick Cave who worked with Hillcoat on the Australian oater "The Proposition".

The exhibit, provided by the Library of Virginia, addresses the economic and social costs of Prohibition, as well as its part in the 18-year social reform movement and the legacy still seen today in the form of NASCAR, the creation of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and the rise of the modern distilling industry. To celebrate the exhibit, Slover Library will host a Speakeasy on Friday, May 31 from 5:30pm-9:30pm. The free celebration will include food by Cuisine and Company, samples of spirits from Tarnished Truth Distilling Company, a cash bar, live 1920s-inspired music from local band The Janks, raffle giveaways and an author talk from Matt Bondurant, writer of The Wettest County in the World. Bondurant’s novel is inspired by his paternal grandfather and two great-uncles, focusing on the Great Franklin County Moonshine Conspiracy, a series of events and a trial related to the illegal activities of the moonshiners in Franklin County, Virginia. Copies of the novel will be available for sale during the Speakeasy and a screening of the film inspired by the book, entitled Lawless, will occur on Sunday, May 19 starting at 1:00 p.m.
