PRESIDENT’S LETTER

“No kind action ever stops A Message to Alumni with itself. One kind action leads to another. and Friends of Elyria Good example is followed. Catholic High School A single act of kindness Recently after visiting an ESL (English as a Second Language) class with our new Chinese students, I was throws out roots in all reminded once again of the power of the words “thank you.” These words carry the same message and evoke directions, and the roots the same emotional response in everyone who uses them spring up and make regardless of their language or culture. new trees.” As Elyria Catholic High School embarks on yet another year of living a mission designed – Amelia Earhart to educate our students for life and to prepare them for eternity, saying “thank you” and expressing my gratitude on behalf of so many becomes a necessity. The acts of kindness and generosity that have been bestowed on EC over the past year have not merely helped to preserve our work and mission but have strengthened it by providing some fantastic opportunities for every student.

The famous aviator and adventurer Amelia Earhart once stated: “No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to another. Good example is followed. A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.”

“New trees” seem to be the order at EC this year and many stories and articles describing them can be found as you read on in the newly designed Panther Prowl.

The fantastic opportunities afforded our students through the implementation of our 1:1 Chromebook Initiative have generated great excitement among our students. More importantly the capacities for sharing resources and enhancing collaborative learning, creativity, and innovation are sure to increase the academic productivity for every EC student. This one-time dream became a reality as a result of the generosity of so many who faithfully supported this endeavor.

With the support of our Diocese, Dads’ Boosters, and a number of private donations, a new synthetic latex, polymer track was installed this summer. It will provide all of our students ample opportunities for physical fitness and interscholastic competition. Aesthetically, the track has added a great dimension for the marketing of our campus, school, and programs.

Through the generosity of members of the Class of 1957, the new “Panther Pavilion” was recently completed and dedicated to provide a meeting place in the stadium for alumni, students, and special events. It is sure to provide years of service to our school community.

Many acts of kindness along with a renewed sense of “reinvestment in EC” are causing roots to spring up from which new trees will grow! It is now necessary, however, to begin to evaluate the forest! We have much work ahead in framing a vision for the future of EC along with the road map to get us there.

In closing, I encourage each of you to “never doubt that a group of generous and committed Tree dedication was held on Friday, alumni, parents, and friends, can ensure the future of Elyria Catholic High School.” September 19 in memory of Joan Rothgery Reaser ’52. Joan’s family Sincerely yours in Christ, was present for the dedication.

Summer Projects Spruce Up Campus

The work did not stop when students dismissed for the summer, as EC received several upgrades and renovations to its facilities both indoors and out. Through major contributions from the Diocese of Cleveland and Elyria Catholic Dads’ Boosters, along with Bob Lehman and family, Alco Manufacturing Corporation LLC, and the Dan Hartnett family, the Knights of Columbus Field got a facelift with a new synthetic all-weather track surface. New striping with “Panthers” etched on both sides completed the overhaul. An important capital project from both a safety as well as a marketing standpoint, the track will provide years of service to EC’s student athletes, its physical education classes, and the entire EC community. Total cost of the project was $65,000.

Along with the track, a new 24x32 foot pavilion was constructed on the home side of the football stadium. Furnished with ample seating for 48 on six Amish-built picnic tables, the pavilion will no doubt get much use from student activities, game night socializing, and alumni gatherings. The grounds near the pavilion were spruced up with new paving and shrubs as well. Generously funded by an anonymous donor, the pavilion was dedicated to the Class of 1957 on Sunday, September 7, 2014 with a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the event.

Inside the school, campus classrooms saw many major improvements as Maintenance Supervisor, Craig Petrus, and his staff painted several classrooms, installed new windows and flooring throughout, and renovated the second floor men’s restroom. The maintenance staff has replaced nearly all of the campus windows, with just 14 left to be installed.

Pioneering Creative Tech Solutions in the Classroom

In August 2014, Elyria Catholic rolled out its 1:1 initiative, the first of its kind for any Cleveland Diocesan high school. It’s a simple concept: for every student, one technology device.

Not a small undertaking in the least, the fledgling project has taken many hours of planning and preparation, with major funding provided through very generous donors, fundraising efforts at EC’s Spring Gala, and also The Ridge Tool Company in Elyria.

“This is an exciting time for the students, our families and the EC community,” stated Amy Butler ’80, Principal. “We think the Google Chromebook is the perfect fit for our faculty and student needs. We are moving into a new era, giving them a unique opportunity in the digital learning environment. We want our students to compete in a global market. When every student has a device, we are able to bring digital and information literacy skills to the forefront, as well as engage students in critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication.” Project managers Kevin Machovina ’03 and Kristen Frank ’00 agreed that the Chromebook was the obvious device of choice for EC’s 1:1 initiative because the school integrated Google Apps for Education, a free suite of hosted email and education apps, two years ago. “The The fledgling project has taken many hours of planning and students and teachers are comfortable using Google Apps, and the Chromebook is, preparation, with major funding provided through very from an IT standpoint, relatively low generous donors, fundraising efforts at EC’s Spring Gala, and maintenance. The Call To Serve By Michael Frey ’07

For most of us, “the call to serve” evokes a sense of patriotic duty or invokes the idea of building moral fiber. The phrase, from whatever capacity it comes, implies a predisposition that is shared by many: a desire to reach out, give back, and pay it forward. Those who choose to serve respond to the phrase with feelings of zeal and empathy. They want to help. They choose to go above and beyond their civic duties and lend a hand. Having been rooted in the school’s pillars of Excellence, Compassion, Faith, Tradition, and Community, four alumni have graciously provided unique perspectives on their calls to serve. Their stories can not only teach us about why service remains an important facet in our communities—both here at Elyria Catholic as well as in the wider scope of society—but they can also reinforce the idea that every person, no matter who they are or what they do, is capable of making a difference.

Immersion Trip: Honduras Reflection

Our travels took us to Honduras. During the past summer, 35 people from both the Gesu Parish and Elyria Catholic High School communities embarked on an incredible mission to Honduras. Senior Moms Club What does a mom do once her children graduate from high school and leave home for college? She forms a “moms club” and continues the relationships that were built around shared experiences with other moms raising their children. Jayne Eisbrenner, mother to Eric ’03 and Ellen ’06 recently stopped by EC and shared her story explaining, “The Senior Moms’ Club was formed so that we could continue to build friendships that were established while our children were attending EC. We spent much of our time together watching our kids play football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and run cross country. We now meet for lunch once a month and while our kids were in college we shared news, made college food packages and offered support.” Jayne says that in recent years many of the boys have found jobs, moved away and have girlfriends. “We’ve continued to share stories and support each other through terrible tragedy such as the death of a spouse or offering help to a young man in need. We’ve laughed and cried with each other. Our sons and Elyria Catholic are the reasons that the club exists,” said Jayne. This fall the Senior Moms Club celebrates their 12th year.
