South Chilterns Team Ministry 2 Welcome and introduction Welcome and thank you for your interest in the benefice of South Chilterns Team Ministry and the post of Missional Team Vicar (House for Duty) within our team. We believe this is an exciting and rewarding opportunity for a priest with a missional heart to share in the leadership of the wider benefice. The role will have a particular focus on helping our church communities to see the missional opportunities around us and to join in what God is doing in our communities. Could you be the person to become involved in our communities, to build our outreach to enable us to grow God’s church and to deepen our engagement within our villages, church schools and wider community? We hope and pray that you will want to embrace the many opportunities and challenges that this rural benefice presents, and that God is calling you to join us to grow God’s kingdom among our diverse communities. If this profile whets your appetite to learn more about us then please visit our websites and contact the Bishop of Buckingham, the Area Dean, Revd Dave Bull or the Team Rector Revd Mark Ackford.

‘we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose’. Romans 8:28

Ministry and mission during Covid-19 As with the rest of the country the churches of the Team Ministry closed for worship on 24th March. Our church members, however, continued to show their love of God through our individual actions, prayers, bible study and sharing in on-line worship. • A dedicated parish blog (https://southchilternsteamministry.wordpress.com) was started containing useful information, contacts, spiritual reflections and a Sunday Service with every effort being made to keep the content as varied as possible. • The Community Matters Foodbank continued assisting any families in need within the parish either due to self-isolation or financial difficulty. This work was supported by generous donations from our village communities. • Zoom meetings became the norm to allow our bible study groups to continue to meet and for staff and church council meetings. Reflecting on the last few months, we have learnt the importance of good communication and thinking outside of the box especially in how to proclaim the gospel through the embracing of new ways of doing church. Above all we have learnt that the church is not just a building it is a community of people who can continue to do the work of God in different and imaginative ways especially during these difficult and trying times.

3 South Chilterns Team Ministry Our new Missional Team Vicar We are seeking a priest who is: • Missional • Innovative • Nurturing • Collaborative We want to work with a Missional Team Vicar who will: • Focus on mission and outreach, especially into the areas of deprivation within the benefice • Grow our congregations by offering a wide variety of worship and churchmanship and by empowering and nurturing the faith amongst the families, youth and children of our parish. • Proactively support our schools (particularly our church schools) • Love people of all ages and actively encourage and support them pastorally • Engage in innovative collaborative ministry working with the Team Rector and laity across the Team Ministry and Wycombe Deanery. Due to the rural nature of the benefice it is desirable that applicants are holders of a full driving licence.

We will offer you: • A warm and inclusive welcome from our four church communities • A supportive and collaborative environment for your ministry • Excellent administrative support • The potential to grow this post into a stipendiary position. We hope and pray that God willing that this position can in time move to being a stipendiary one • A recently refurbished 4-bedroom Vicarage

South Chilterns Team Ministry 4 The South Chilterns Team Ministry The South Chiltern Team Ministry covers the four villages of Stokenchurch (pop. 5,000), Lane End (pop. 4,500), Ibstone (pop.250) and Cadmore End (pop. 250). In January 2019, these four parishes have been united in the new benefice and parish of the South Chilterns. The Missional Team Vicar is a newly created post to minister across all four churches and communities. The Team Rector, the Revd Mark Ackford, has been in post since October 2018. The Ministry Team ministers with the Rector across all four churches and this has enabled our congregations to get to know each other and each member of the team. The new Missional Team Vicar will be part of this new Ministry Team and will play a full part in its leadership, life and growth. The current Ministry team is made up of: a Lay Minister, a Lay Minister in training and several local retired clergy. They meet regularly to pray together, discuss mission development and items of concern, to plan the service rota and our work in local Church schools and to support initiatives across the Benefice. Where are we The villages in which our churches are located are in the within the county of . The Chiltern Hills are a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, west of , north of the river Thames, south of Aylesbury Vale and east of Oxford. All the villages have excellent road and rail links to High Wycombe, London, Heathrow, Oxford and the Midlands as the M40 crosses the Benefice between junctions 4 and 5.

South Chilterns Team Ministry 6 What we would like you to help us to do • Grow our congregations by empowering and nurturing the faith amongst the families, youth and children of our parish so that we can become the truly inclusive church that God has called us to be. • Grow the different styles of worship within our churches to make God accessible to all. • Help us explore different approaches to pastoral ministry within the team ministry so that we can show the love of God to people of all ages and actively encourage and support them especially those within the areas of deprivation found in our parish. This we feel is an important part of our mission and outreach and needs further development. • Take our Christian witness to our school communities by proactively supporting all our schools in the Parish, particularly our church schools. The Wycombe Deanery has made a successful bid to create a Deanery Discipleship Training Centre in which trainees will be educated to build relationships with our local schools it is hoped that one trainee will be based in our parish. • With the Team Rector assist in the formation of our new Team Ministry and the development of a more integrated approach to rural ministry in this part of the Wycombe Deanery.

7 South Chilterns Team Ministry Our strengths Our church communities do lots of things well. We recognise that we: • Offer to all a great welcome as we feel that we are part of a family of inclusive church communities open to all to explore what it means to be a follower of Christ. In addition, all our churches are open during daylight hours as safe prayerful spaces for all. • Are aware of the pastoral needs of our local communities and support those who require it through our words and actions as the body of Christ in the here and now. • Build and foster our own relationships, having as much fun together as we can through the various social activities held throughout the year, as we work together to build the kingdom of God. • Are blessed with four church buildings which are at the heart of their communities, these are in the most part well maintained however one will need some structural work in the future. • Have supported several ordinands from Ripon College Cuddesdon whilst they have been on Sunday placement with us.

Our challenges We also recognise that our church communities face challenges: • To manage change within our church communities as we embed our new Team Ministry. • To deepen our prayer and spiritual lives especially in the light of the challenges of today’s world and society. • Looking at our Church communities we acknowledge that we have predominately aging congregations and need to explore at how we can reverse this trend. • Three of the four churches have more traditional facilities and we would like to investigate how we can make them fit for the purpose of worshiping God in the twenty first century. To do this we will have to increase our income through shrewd management of our resources and stewardship. • Due to the closure of places of worship for other Christian denominations in the parish, we are now the predominant Christian presence and are challenged to make our church communities the place where all Christians within our villages feel called to worship and grow in their faith.

South Chilterns Team Ministry 8 Our churches Holy Trinity Church Lane End At Holy Trinity we place great importance on the church’s role as a channel of Christ’s Mission. We seek to develop our own community life while at the same time reaching out to the wider community through regular social events. Our Community Matters Team, which includes some helpers from the Elim Hope Church, deliver food and other basics to needy families within the area who are referred to us by the local Social Services team. Our ‘Jump for Joy’ children's service, Messy Easter, Messy Christmas and Christingle service are all very well supported attracting many adults and children from our village and beyond. For more information, see our website: www.holytrinitylaneend.org.uk/public/index.php

St Mary-Le-Moor Church Cadmore End Our vision is to worship God and grow in faith through Christian fellowship, establishing a vibrant and loving church in the community. The church has a small but enthusiastic and loyal congregation who warmly welcome visitors. It is open during daylight hours for those who wish to sit in peace and quiet. There is a special space by the font with church information and Christian books where candles can be lit and there is a book for prayer requests. There is a monthly community coffee morning in the church. The church is 150 years old with strong ties to many families who previously lived in the village, as well as those of the present. The Church Hall is adjacent to the Church and is used for various functions by both the Church and the Village Community. For more information, see our website: http://church.cadmoreend.org.uk/

9 South Chilterns Team Ministry St Peter and St Paul Church Stokenchurch Our vision is to be a church that is Continuing Jesus’ mission to make disciples by being disciples. Our priority is to meet together as a church and we see worship as an opportunity to serve and encourage one another. Our heart is to love our family, friends, neighbours and strangers so much that we will proclaim Christ in word and deed to help them to know God for themselves. We believe that our lives should be marked by prayer and bible study as we show our obedience and dependence on God and prioritise time to meet and encourage one another. We have two well established home groups which meet weekly. In addition there is a Church social committee and an extensive team of keen volunteers who work hard to run Lent lunches, Good Friday walks (with the other churches in the team), Harvest supper, summer concert, quiz night and annual sponsored walk. The Church currently has a small Sunday School and a regular toddler group (Tot-Time) meets on Thursdays in the Church rooms. For more information, see our website: http://www.spchurch.co.uk/

St Nicholas Church Ibstone The village has a wonderful community spirit and is welcoming to newcomers. Our community is small enough to get to know everyone.

The church is kept open at all times which is appreciated by the parishioners, those who walk the Chiltern Hills and those whose family roots are in the area. The Carol Service is popular and the annual festivals of Harvest, Remembrance, Easter and Christmas are very well attended. These services embrace our community and strengthen our fellowship.

Fundraising for the church is well supported and the village people are generally supportive of the church including the cleaning and flower rotas.

In addition to these services there are lay led family services throughout the year in partnership with our church school. For more information, see our website: https://www.ibstonechurch.uk/home

South Chilterns Team Ministry 10 Our church schools We are blessed to have two Church of Primary Schools within the parish, at Ibstone and at Cadmore End. There are also community primary schools within the benefice at Stokenchurch, and Lane End. For more information, see the school websites: http://www.ibstoneschool.org.uk/ and http://www.cadmoreendschool.org/website

11 South Chilterns Team Ministry Governance, data protection and safeguarding The Team Ministry operates under the following management structure: • 1 Team Council (PCC) chaired by the Team Rector (meets up to 6 times a year) • 4 Church Councils (DCCs) lay chaired (meets between 6-10 times a year dependent on which council) • A weekly staff meeting currently held in the Team Rector’s vicarage. The Missional Team Vicar would be expected to attend weekly staff meetings, Team Council meetings and being based in Lane End the Church Councils of Holy Trinity Lane End and St Mary le Moor Cadmore End. They are of course most welcome to attend the Church Councils of St Peter and St Paul Stokenchurch and St Nicholas Ibstone at any time. Good Safeguarding and Data Protection practices are of great importance to the benefice and are standing items on all the agendas of our Team and Church Councils meetings. All Church Councils have adopted national Church and diocese guidelines on these topics and have completed the appropriate diocesan training.

Finance Generally, the finances within our Team are in good standing apart from St Mary le Moor Church Cadmore End which continues to struggle to pay its full parish share. Team Ministry expenses are shared out to a mutually agreed formula based on the size of an individual church’s parish share and the church treasurers meet regularly together to maintain an oversight of the Team finances. So far income has been greatly reduced this year due to Covid-19 which will result in all churches having to dip into their precious financial reserves. To offset this, we are currently exploring the Parish Giving Scheme as a way of increasing the income of all our churches. Our vision for the future is therefore that our financial position will strengthen. When it does, we hope that this position will become a stipendiary post.

South Chilterns Team Ministry 14 Wycombe deanery The Wycombe Deanery is a family of 35 Anglican churches who - together with our ecumenical friends - serve the 150,000 people living in and around High Wycombe. Together the Deanery Churches comprise over 3,000 Christians living, working and playing our part in the growth of God's Kingdom here. Our 3 core principles are: 1. Serving our fellowships By which we mean: Always seeking the good of each parish Focusing on people and right relationships, not buildings or structures Acting in a collaborative and mutually supportive way 2. Shaping our future By which we mean: Taking responsibility for the future of the Deanery, which is in our own hands under God Proactive long-term planning for growth Bold and realistic plans for short / medium-term sustainability 3. Spurring on our friends By which we mean: Exploring new ways to grow in love and in our calling Enabling parishes to work better together Learning from each other and identifying partnerships Supporting, encouraging, unifying and inspiring: To enable this, our key groups are the: Deanery Chapter - a bimonthly gathering of clergy, modelled on the Upper Room of the book of Acts, where we gather together to pray, to encourage each other and to seek the leading of the Holy Spirit together Deanery Synod - a quarterly gathering of elected leaders from our 35 churches, where we devote at least 50% of our time to focusing on what is inspirational or missional, or both. Deanery Leadership Teams - our Mission & Pastoral Committee and Standing Committee provide a lead on strategic, operational and financial aspects of Deanery life and consists of gifted lay and clergy representatives from the churches. We focus on achieving and growing a sustainable pattern of stipendiary ministry, and the wellbeing of our clergy and lay members. This feels like a time of new beginnings in the Wycombe Deanery. In October 2019 we held 'Sharing the Fire', a Deanery-wide worship celebration attended by 475 people who left with a renewed sense that the fire of God's Spirit is spreading across our churches. We are currently preparing our new Deanery Plan for 2021-25, key elements of which will include: training young leaders for children's ministry, a resource church in High Wycombe, a strategy for rural churches and continuing to connect with our local charities. Lay Chair: Graeme Slocombe, Area Dean: Dave Bull, Assistant Area Dean: Hugh Ellis For more information, see http://www.wycombedeanery.com/

The Diocese comprises more than 600 parishes, with over 800 churches, serving a diverse population of more than 2 million people located in all types of settings. Due to the size and complexity of the Diocese, we have three Area Bishops who exercise considerable strategic and pastoral oversight for their Areas.
