Check the website for any updates. The Portsmouth Group offers a variety of walks mainly in Hampshire, West Sussex and the Isle of Wight. On Saturdays these are moderately paced 5 to 9 mile walks whilst, on Sundays, they are faster paced 11 to 15 mile walks. The Group also has short Friday evening walks and some extra Saturday walks in more distant parts in the summer months. Most walks have a pub/cafe stop either at the end or at lunch time. New walkers always welcome. Just turn up at meeting place for shorter walks. For walks in excess of 10 miles, please contact leader first if you have not previously walked this distance. Grade A walks – for experienced walkers; brisk pace Grade B walks – regular pace Grade C walks – moderate pace Grade D walks – slow pace These are only general indications of the pace and will vary with the individual leader. South Downs National Park Authority Authority Monitoring Report 01 April 2019 to 31 March 2020 December 2020 1 Executive Summary This is the sixth Authority Monitoring Report (AMR) produced by the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) and it is the first AMR to be produced since the adoption of the South Downs Local Plan (SDLP) in July 2019. The end of the monitoring year, March 31 2020, marked exactly a decade since the South Downs National Park Authority came into being. The South Downs National Park was designated on 18 December 2002 under Part 2 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 by the South Downs (National Park) Designation Order 2002. This was the day when 1,600km2 of England’s most cherished lowland landscape was able to enjoy management, through the planning system, for the enjoyment of the nation as a special place for natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage. This AMR helps to monitor how effective the National Park Authority has been on delivering on its purposes and duty. The AMR reports on a number of planning documents including the SDLP, numerous neighbourhood development plans and adopted and emerging waste and minerals plans. The AMR reports on the financial year 2019-20, which is the sixth year of the 2014-2033 plan period for the SDLP. The monitoring year was only affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in its final month. This will obviously have had a significant impact on development in the current year, which will be reported on in the 2021 AMR. -

This booklet explains more about the referendum that is going to take place and how you can take part in it. In this booklet, you can find out about: The Planning System The Development Plan [of which neighbourhood development plans are part] The neighbourhood development plan The neighbourhood area The referendum and how you can take part The Planning System The planning system manages the use and development of land and buildings. It exists to ensure that development is in the public interest and contributes to the achievement of sustainable development. This means ensuring that meeting the needs of the present do not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It also means protecting and enhancing the built and natural environment while allowing growth that balances supporting the economy and community needs for homes, jobs, transport and infrastructure. The planning system has two main parts: Plan making – setting out proposals for development and policies to guide development over time. Managing development – where development is agreed through the granting of planning permission. Not all forms of development require planning permission as some building operations, depending on their scale and type, are covered by permitted development rights. For development that requires planning permission the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) is responsible for deciding whether the development should go ahead. Decisions on planning applications in the Rogate area are based on the National Planning Policy Framework, the Development Plan for the SDNPA and any other material considerations that affect the decision. -

“Steps”, Trotton, Nr Petersfield, West Sussex, GU31 5JS Response by Trotton with Chithurst Parish Council to the LGCBE Draft Recommendations for Chichester District Trotton with Chithurst Parish Council considered the draft recommendations at a meeting held on Wednesday 14th. September 2016. We are delighted that the proposal to move Trotton from Harting ward was rejected. However, we continue to have grave concerns regarding the proposal to move Elsted and Treyford Parish from Harting ward to Midhurst ward. Our response to the initial consultation included four points relating directly to Elsted parish, and we would repeat and strengthen these here: 1. Trotton no longer has a school, shop, village green, sports ground, village hall or public house and must rely on its neighbours' facilities. Our population centre (albeit a small one) is situated to the south of our parish, about a mile from the public house at Lower Elsted, which hosts events for Trotton residents each month. The Village hall and sports ground at Elsted give a good view across Trotton and are often used by Trotton residents. Trotton and Elsted Parishes are similar in size and nature and the two Parish councils have recently been exploring options for closer working, including the potential for a Common Parish Council. We have strong links to Elsted, which in turn has strong links with Harting Parish. 2. Like our neighbours in Elsted parish, Trotton also has strong links to its larger neighbour Rogate as the two parishes share a Rector across the four churches which make up the United Benefice. Given the small size and sparse facilities of our parish, we also value our links with Rogate for its school and for allowing us to combine with them for celebrations such as the recent Queen’s birthday. -

272 HAMPSHIRE FIELD CLUB INSECTS IN HAMPSHIRE, 1933 By F. H. HAINES HE summer of 1933, remarkable for drought and the amount of long-continued sunshine and heat, reacted on insects, T especially Lepidoptera, on the whole favourably. Times of appearance were very early, migrants numerous, and species normally single or double-brooded often produced an extra brood. But many, such as dragonflies, were soon over. February was wet, April dry, but June had one very heavy storm here (1.59ms. in 24 hours). The absence of rain was particularly noticeable later in-the year : in August, November and December. Orthoptera (Earwigs, Cockroaches, Crickets and Grass hoppers). The species of Ectobia were abundant and early, as was Nemobius sylvestris F., and grasshoppers : Pholidoptera griseoaptera De G. in the New Forest in August, Metrioptera albopunctata Gz. near Ringwood, M. brachyptera L., Conocephalus dorsalis 'Latr., Meconema thalassinum De G. and Leptophyes punctatissima Bosc. in the Forest. Tetrix subulatus L. was common, and hibernated T. bipunctatus L. was met with here very early. Goytphocerus maculatus Thunb. was everywhere in the wild, dry places around through summer and autumn, its colour, as usual, varying endlessly with that of its surroundings. The large Mecostethus grossus L., not uncommon in the forest bogs, and usually on Linwood Bog, was strangely, conditions being so favourable, not found here this year. Omocestus rufipes Zett. was not nearly so common on the heath as was O. viridulus L. on the grass. It was still abundant, basking in the sun on the woodwork of the house here, and else where, late in October. -

I have previously made these comments to the neighbourhood Plan group but they have not been acted on, nor have I received a response to them. I broadly welcome the plan and thank the authors for their hard work in preparing it. I recognise the value of such a plan in protecting the future of the area, albeit that the status of such plans appear to have been diminished by recent government policy announcements. One of the visions of the plan (page 5), is to "promote the use of recreational spaces....." in the parish. However, one of the largest open spaces in the area is not listed in the Local Green Spaces (page 14) and indeed the whole plan appears to be silent on the issue. That area is the green space known locally as the "Polo Fields". It is a fundamentally crucial open space adjacent to the East side of Stedham village. There are two public footpaths across the land. In addition there has been a long-term understanding that local residents can access the land for responsible recreational purposes. Indeed, this happens every day of the year and is certainly not restricted to the public footpaths. The "polo Fields" title is mainly historical, dating back to the one time proposal to develop a polo centre here. -
