A fun car show and lunch at THE CORDIANO winery S. Ross

We were greeted by a swinging three pointed star upon arrival at the destination

WOW! This was a blow out folks. We had more cars than we had room to park and what an assembly of really nice Mercedes-Benz automobiles' ranging from a 1952 Adenauer 300d from the Gunthorp collection to a 2017 GTS AMG driven by our newest member Roy Axelrod. Attendees were greeted by yours truly, Victoria, Gary, and Ed to park cars and then we were served coffee from Starbucks and fresh home-baked cranberry muffins and snicker doodle muffins. As Bud Hartwell would say "there was some fine German iron on the field." The organizers arrived early or what we thought was early, and almost immediately cars started showing up. Gary Jarvis was an early arrival, and thankfully he was there to help position the vehicles.

Several SLs and AMG were in attendance. Rich Seymour brought the family owned 1980 300 TD diesel wagen, to represent that Mercedes-Benz is not just into go-fast haul-two people vehicles.

Mr. Rudy Hradecky, our Director of Proper Procedures, was our judge for the car show. He did an outstanding job, and I heard no complaints. His selections were entirely appropriate.

It can be difficult to get a good photo, or a photo at all for that matter, of a judge. There are times when perceived influence or monetary action is completely misinterpreted that may occur as the judge makes their rounds. This has caused the judge and the entrants to be "photo shy". You may note this photo has been photo shopped to prevent any misunderstanding.

CAR SHOW WINNERS

Tony Edwards takes home the third place trophy with his Silver SL55 AMG. Very nice ride.

Bob Gunthorp wins second place with his 1952 300d Sedan commonly called the Adenauer. This Mercedes-Benz was dubbed the Adenauer when Conrad Adenauer the first Chancellor of the Federal German Republic used six of these custom built cabriolet and hardtop sedans.

First place, Stephen Shapley with is 1972 280SEL 4.5. The 290SEL was first produced with a 2.8 liter engine. Mercedes-Benz later made it available with the 4.5 liter V-8 engine. This model is much more desirable in todays market and fetches considerably more money than the 280. Stephen has done a lot of work on this car and he has a couple more Mercedes-Benz in work.

Thank you Rudy for stepping up to be our judge. Being a judge is not an easy task and many people don't like to be a judge, myself included. Without a judge it is just a car show and most of us like to have our car win a prize.

The President, Victoria, the board and Ed the organizer thank all of you profusely for bringing your Mercedes- Benz automobiles out and having a fun day. It was really nice to meet many of you for the first time and thank you Frank and Pam for joining our club and we look forward to many more fun events with you and the SLK that Pam is now driving more I bet.

IT WAS A FANTASTICALLY FUN DAY AND THE VIEW WAS TO DIE FOR

BUTTONWILLOW DRIVING EVENTS 2019

SATURDAYS, Feb. 16th; Aug. 10th; and Dec. 7th; 2019 8:30 AM to 4:00PM

Fast facts about Buttonwillow

This is an opportunity for members of the Mercedes Club to participate in a one-day driving experience, either on an individual basis or as an organized membership gathering. This one-day performance driving and learning event allows you to become a better driver. You also learn more about the performance and handling aspects of your Mercedes.

Although this event held at a racetrack is referred to as performance driving, this is not one’s primary reason for going to Buttonwillow. You will be given the opportunity to learn to drive your Mercedes more safely and competently by a professional driver. You will learn about speed, cornering, braking, and more importantly the capability of your Mercedes or other automobile, as well as your own driving capabilities. After instruction, you may, if you want, go to the track solo and see how you do.

Buttonwillow Raceway Park is a motorsports park in Kern County, California, 10 miles (16 km) north of the town of Buttonwillow and 28 miles (45 km) northwest of Bakersfield. It is located just off the Buttonwillow exit on I-5. Constructed during World War 1 by world famous racing driver Dario Resta, it is now owned and operated by the California Sports Car Club, a region of SCCA. Buttonwillow is the "flagship" track of Cal Club, and is also the location of the Cal Club's administrative offices. (Courtesy of Wikipedia) Visit the Buttonwillow Raceway website at: buttonwillowraceway.com.

The scheduled meets for Saturdays during 2019 are as follows: February 16th, August 10th, and December 7th.

THE POINT IS TO NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY THE TERMS, RACE TRACK, PERFORMANCE DRIVING ETC. THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFE TIME TO LEARN ABOUT YOUR CARS PERFORMANCE, SAFETY FEATURES, AND HOW TO USE THEM SAFELY AND EFFECTIVELY. ANYONE WHO HAS PARTICIPATED IN THESE EVENTS COME AWAY A MUCH BETTER DRIVER…NOT TO MENTION HAVING A BARREL OF. WOMEN HAVE ALWAYS DONE VERY WELL IN THESE EVENTS. WE HOPE TO SEE AS MANY AS POSSIBLE THERE HAVING FUN WITH US!

PagodaFest Jeff Brook OCTOBER 3-5 2019 PagodaFest is coming to San Diego in 2019! What is PagodaFest? In a nutshell, PagodaFest is about and for Pagoda owners and enthusiasts worldwide who own or otherwise enjoy the iconic Mercedes- Benz 230 SL, 250 SL, and 280 SL roadsters and convertibles and want to learn more about these cars.

Sponsored by the International Pagoda SL Group (www.sl113.org), PagodaFest is not formally affiliated with MBCA. Most Pagoda members own other Mercedes cars and are members of MBCA. Historically, Pagoda events have drawn 25-30 or more Pagoda cars with attendance from all over the United States, Canada, Europe, and even as far away as Australia.

PagodaFest San Diego will be the first Pagoda-focused event to take place west of the . PagodaFest San Diego will be headquartered at the Grand Pacific Palisades resort in Carlsbad, with car activities scheduled for both Friday, October 4, at the Flower Fields adjacent the Grand Pacific, and a drive starting from the Grand Pacific on Saturday, October 5, and winding throughout portions of San Diego County.

At the Flower Fields, technical sessions and interactive presentations are planned to educate PagodaFest attendees on the features, operation and maintenance of their Pagoda cars. Also, there will be a Pagoda Marketplace enabling attendees and vendors to sell, buy and trade all things Pagoda. In the afternoon we will have a Pagoda Showcase to show off your Pagoda on the lush grounds of the Flower Fields. A perfect setting for socializing with fellow Pagoda enthusiasts. We will end our first day with one of the things for which San Diego is best known, namely a Fiesta dinner with mariachi music, traditional dancers, and a Pagoda piñata!

The drive on Saturday will be a Pagoda Poker Run, and is a self-paced leisurely tour through several of San Diego County's scenic sights while competing with fellow Pagoda drivers for the best hand of poker. At each of five planned stops, Poker Run participants will be given a card ultimately forming a five-card poker hand. Prizes will be given for the best (and also the worst!) poker hand at a celebratory awards dinner that evening at the Encinitas Ranch Resort overlooking the beautiful San Diego coastal bluffs. Here you can watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean while enjoying your favorite beverage and friends while being warmed by the outdoor fireplace. Awards will be given to the winners of the Showcase and the Poker Run, as well as raffle prizes.

All of the above fun and excitement is conveniently available in one all-inclusive PagodaPASS ticket. If you are interested in learning more about PagodaFest, or to buy tickets, please visit the official PagodaFest website http://www.pagodafest.com. However, the number of agodaPASSes is limited and we expect them to sell out soon. So if you have a Pagoda we hope you will act quickly and join us for two days of social and technical Pagoda fun! Mercedes-Benz Club of America Educational Foundation (MBCAEF)

The Mercedes-Benz Club of America (MBCA) established the Mercedes-Benz Club of America Educational Foundation (MBCAEF) as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in 1997. The newly formed Foundation’s goal was to share the rich history and heritage of the Mercedes-Benz automobile through education and preservation. With the founding objectives clearly in mind, the MBCAEF Board of Directors has launched three initiatives. Automobile Restoration Initiative – There is a strong history of cooperation between Mercedes- Benz enthusiasts and the McPherson College automobile restoration program. The MBCAEF Board views automobile restoration as an excellent means to both educate and preserve Mercedes-Benz automobile history and heritage. The McPherson College Automobile Restoration Program has announced their acquisition of a 1953 Mercedes- Benz 300S Cabriolet. As part of their strategic plan, they will restore this car and present it at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2023. The MBCAEF has contributed funds and Board members, regularly attend the annual McPherson College Automotive Restoration Students (C.A.R.S.) Club weekend event the first weekend in May. Driver Skills Initiative – Each year, too many drivers in the United States and Canada are seriously injured or lose their lives on public roadways. A significant percentage of these drivers are new and inexperienced. In recognition of an educational opportunity that would benefit the greater community of drivers, the MBCAEF developed the Safe Drivers/Safe Families (SD/SF) Driver skills curriculum on behalf of MBCA. The SD/SF curriculum uses a combination of classroom instruction and closed course practical application of vital driving tactics while providing a sustainable and uniform driver skills curriculum that may be applied in all twelve regions of MBCA The SD/SF Driver Skills Curriculum is the exclusive property of MBCA and has been formally adopted as the official MBCA driver skills curriculum. The MBCAEF has developed printable pdf documents and has printed Driver Handbooks and Coaches Guides for use by MBCA Regions and Sections who host or sponsor SD/SF events. Library Cataloging - Since inception of the MBCAEF, the Foundation has been recipient of many volumes of literature, video tapes, 16mm films, microfiche film and other assorted materials. It is within the scope of the MBCAEF to organize and catalog, as possible, the materials that now belong to the Foundation. The materials reside at the National Business Office of the Member. Some cataloging of donated materials has been previously accomplished. There has been no recent progress in this initiative. Fund Raising – The MBCAEF accepts cash donations from Sections and members. Additionally, the Foundation is prepared to accept donations of Mercedes-Benz automobiles from members. Because the Foundation is a 501(c)(3), contributions are deductible. Please consider the Mercedes-Benz Club of America Educational Foundation among your charitable giving candidate organizations.

McPherson Collage in McPherson Kansas is one of the few collages that offer a four year degree in automotive restoration. It is supported by the MBCA and several of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center employees are graduates of McPherson.

YAY! more daylight hours! The view was amazing and the sun was shining brightly on the 22 cars and 35 participants at the Cordiano Winery Car Show and Festivities. There were new faces, and some members we hadn't seen in quite awhile. YAY - guests Frank and Pam Leonard joined our club at the event while members renewed or started new friendships. The food was great and the wine so very nice...so nice that member Ed Mucussi joined the "Cordiano Wine Club." Of note: I was honored to receive a number of emails and calls from members stating "what a good time they had." This is your club and we want everyone to feel welcome at every event...please join in. See the schedule of events in this Star Bulletin. Thanks to Steve Ross, Carol Ross, Diana Kruse, and Bob Gunthrop for taking the photos.

Save the Date! NEW EVENT - Sunday, July 14, 1 pm House Party: Car Race and Lunch on the Lobner's Patio - details to follow in the May Bulletin

I'm looking forward to seeing you soon. Invite a friend to come along and join our club - we always have FUN!

Cheers, Victoria President, MBCA – San Diego Section
