North West Town Centre Profiles

A series of economic statistical profiles have been produced on each of the 6 towns in the District to illustrate their individual character and strengths. They range in size from the main urban centre of to the small town of Kegworth.

Kegworth

Kegworth lies on the close to the border. It is situated on the A6 near junction 24 of the and is also close to Airport and East Midlands Parkway railway station. The area of Kegworth covers 114.25 hectares, with a density of 31.5 people per hectare.

Population:

According to the 2011 Census the total population of the built-up urban area of Kegworth stood at 3,301 –

The three top sectors in terms of employment in the Kegworth area are Wholesale; Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles & Motor Cycles with 13.6% of total employment; followed by Education (13.0%) and joint third - Real Estate activities; Professional, Scientific & technical activities and Administrative, & support service activities (11.4%) and Manufacturing (11,4%).

In terms of Types of Employment the 3 categories of Management and Professional, Kegworth saw 38% of its working population within these sectors, in line with the District as a whole and slightly below the 40% for England & Wales as a whole.

Kegworth Built-up Area has a higher proportion of its population with Level 4 and above qualifications, compared with the District as a whole with nearly 1 in 3 16 – 64 year olds at this level. At the opposite end of the scale more people have no qualifications at just nearly 20% compared with 26% in the District as a whole and nationally 22.5%. These figures relate to 2011 and since then the number of apprenticeships have risen and those with no qualifications fallen.

The rate for the local ward is slightly above for NWL District but below Great Britain’s 1.9%

Town Centre – types of businesses

In early 2017, according to an NWLDC review, there were around 34 retail and service business premises in the town centre, of which 94% were independents. This is significantly higher than the national average of 67%. There are only 6 (18%) retail establishments; 6 (18%) pubs/food establishments; 6 (18%) Hairdressers/Barbers; 12 (35%) Professional/Industrial and 4 (12%) vacant.

Vacancy rates

As of July 2017 there were 4 vacant town centre premises, accounting for 12% of the stock.

Business/Industrial Parks

The two major employers Slack & Parr and Cott’s Beverages are both based to the north of the town centre. Small industrial units???

Large employers

Kegworth is home to a number of hotels, as it is adjacent to the M1 and in close proximity of . The 3 largest are Best Western Premier Yew Lodge Hotel; Kegworth Hotel & Conference Centre and Kegworth House – all located in the heart of the village. The town’s major employers are Cott Beverages who are a lead manufacturer and supplier of soft drinks. They employed 984 employees in 2016. Cott Beverages were part of the Cott Corporation but in July 2017 it was announced that Cott Corporation had entered into an agreement to sell its traditional manufacturing business to Refresco – for $1.25billion.

According to Zoopla, the average price paid for a property in the Kegworth area currently is £203,144 with the corresponding average value of £229,554. The value has increased by £4,059 or 1.8% in the past 12 months. These figures relate to 65 sales.

The average rent for a 1 bedroomed house is £390pcm (per calendar month) and a 4 bed house £1,374pcm.
