Two Influential British World War 2 Technologies Aram Soultanian London HUA 2900 Dr. David Spanagel & Esther Boucher-Yip 6/20/18 1 Soultanian Introduction When fighting a war, technology can provide one of the greatest advantages the military can possess. A country’s ability to produce more advanced technologies and determine whether or not their technologies have been compromised is probably the difference between winning and losing. Every year, the United States spends billions of dollars developing and building stealth technologies used in state-of-the-art fighter jets and helicopters. The fifth generation F-35 Lightning II and F-22 Raptor have the RADAR Cross Section comparable in size to a golf ball and bumble bee respectively.1 This makes these fighter jets virtually impossible to detect until it is far too late, and the plane has passed with its payload dropped. The concept of stealth planes came from the development of RADAR systems in World War II. Today, not a single F-35 or F-22 has been shot down in combat or in air-to-air exercise and will likely not for another 5-10 years.2 Additionally, the paranoia surrounding encryption began after Alan Turing and a group of codebreakers developed a machine to discover the exact setup of Enigma machines used by the German Navy. Military and private companies alike are prioritizing data security to ensure their data is only accessible to those authorized. The ability to know precisely when an enemy will attack allows preemptive safety measures such as evacuation and coordination of counter attacks, thus reducing the number of casualties. -

This year, there were four judges: Peter Butcher, Dick Green, Peter Hill and Tony Jones. There were eleven students from Australia, India, Italy and the UK. As usual, the projects ranged across radar, communications and electronic warfare systems, flavoured in some cases by laser data links, unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) and innovative materials. Many of the devices and systems could provide solutions to current and future defence requirements. We assigned scores against “audience rapport”, “audio visual use”, “clarity of subject”, “structure” and “end summary” criteria, in order to rank the presentations. We also considered how the speakers handled questions. This year, four presentations stood out and we had to reach consensus on a single winner very quickly. By some mysterious process, we agreed that the winner was Major Anthony Glover for his presentation on The use of low cost software defined radio systems to detect transient 4G mobile phone uplink transmissions in order to identify and classify the user activity. Dick Green then handed over a cheque for £200 to Major Glover and informed him that, as part of the award, he would be given honorary membership of DEHS for one year. -

Cavity magnetron 1 Cavity magnetron The cavity magnetron is a high-powered vacuum tube that generates microwaves using the interaction of a stream of electrons with a magnetic field. The 'resonant' cavity magnetron variant of the earlier magnetron tube was invented by John Randall and Harry Boot in 1940 at the University of Birmingham, England.[1] The high power of pulses from the cavity magnetron made centimeter-band radar practical, with shorter wavelength radars allowing detection of smaller objects. The compact cavity magnetron tube drastically reduced the size of radar sets[2] so that they could be installed in anti-submarine aircraft[3] and Magnetron with section removed to exhibit the escort ships.[2] At present, cavity magnetrons are commonly used in cavities. The cathode is built into the center of an evacuated, lobed, circular chamber. A magnetic field parallel to the filament is imposed by a permanent magnet. The magnetic field causes the electrons, attracted to the (relatively) positive outer part of the chamber, to spiral outward in a circular path rather, a consequence of the Lorentz force. Over 100 names were suggested, across all colleges and all areas of expertise. Researchers at the University are using robots to improve social interaction and communication with autistic children in the classroom. OXIMETRY (PULSEOX) WAS A SIMPLE AND SAFE TEST TO HELP IDENTIFY CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE IN NEWBORN BABIES, WHICH CONTRIBUTES TO 46% OF DEATHS FROM CONGENITAL MALFORMATIONS AND WOULD OTHERWISE GO UNDETECTED. Professor Alan Rickinson Alan Rickinson led the development of the Institute of Cancer Studies (now School of Cancer Sciences) at the University of Birmingham from 1983 to 2001, overseeing its expansion from a small non-clinical research department into a large research institute integrating basic work on cancer genetics, viral oncology and tumour immunology with translational studies in gene/ immunotherapy and the activities of a large cancer clinical trials unit. Since then, he has been fully committed to maintaining Birmingham’s position as an international centre of excellence for work on human tumour viruses, and continues to lead a large research group focusing on the Epstein–Barr virus and its associated malignancies. -
