It compares these figures with those from 2001 to show that the population has “aged”, and that there is a large number of people who are close to retirement age. The population of Lochaber has grown by 6.1% (compared to the Highland average of 11.1%) with an increase in both Wards, and at a local level in 18 out of 27 data zones. Local population growth is strongly linked to the building of new homes. 1. Background 1.1. Publication of the results from the 2011 Census began in December 2012, and the most recent published in November and December 2013 gave the first detailed results for “census output areas”, the smallest areas for which results are published. Including the Strontian catchment in the proposed GM catchment therefore reflects existing practice that has developed on an informal basis. 2. Recommendations 2.1 Members are asked to agree to proceed to statutory consultation, on the basis of the proposal attached to this report. 3. Implications 3.1 Resource - The proposal seeks to maximise access to GME whilst still considering and balancing financial implications, particularly with regard to school transport. No additional costs are envisaged at present as a result of the proposal. 3.2 Legal - The Proposal will be issued for statutory consultation as required by the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010.     WINTER 2017 BUILD ABOUT TO START ON NEW HOMES FOR LOCHYSIDE We are pleased to announce that, in conjunction with the Highland Council, we are about to start building new homes on the site of the former Lochyside Primary School. The building of these new properties is expected to begin in January next year with a completion anticipated for the summer of 2019. The site will deliver 31 properties for the Highland Council and 29 for the Association – a total of sixty new homes, of which 48 will be let at affordable rents for people on the Highland Housing Register. The remaining 12 homes will be for sale: 6 developed by the Council for outright sale and 6 for the Association for sale on a shared equity basis. The Highland Small Communities Housing Trust is acting for both the Highland Council and the Association as development agent in the delivery of the units. Hugh Donaldson, LHA Chair said “We are delighted that our partnership with the Trust has been renewed for a further three years. This working arrangement has delivered affordable housing opportunities in various parts of Lochaber in recent years, including on an adjacent site at Lochyside. So we are particularly pleased to be able to serve the community through the regeneration of this site. Bracken covers most areas of past cultivation. High Mingarry, Moidart. (NM 68800.70200) In historic records, the township of Mingarry appears as Mengary, Mingary and Mingarry. The original settlement was likely to have been sited to the north of the parliamentary road, at the place now known as High Mingarry where scattered ruins are evident. Aaron Arrowsmith's Map of Scotland 1807, shows that Mingarry was some distance to the north of the proposed Parliamentary road and that a track left the route of the road to the west of the Mingarry Burn and climbed the hill in a north-easterly direction to the settlement. The track then continued over the hill to the south shore of Loch Moidart to meet the route of the road near the River Moidart crossing point at the east end of the loch. The Lochshiel Estate Map, probably drawn up about 1811-1816 indicates that at that time the settlement of Mingarry was sited on the hillside to the north of Loch Shiel and to the north of the parliamentary road, mainly between two tributaries of the Mingarry Burn. At that time, there were no buildings near the road. Historic Background Pre 1745 The date of origin of the township is unknown. Moidart was part of the mainland Clanranald Estates. The settlement appears in lists of Estate rentals 1691-1771 as Mengary.

    Mammal Report: Speyside and Ardnamurchan Peninsula, Scotland, October 2008. Mike Richardson Introduction On October 12, 2008, I visited the Highlands of Scotland for a week. While wildlife watching wasn’t the primary aim of my trip, I was able to spend a reasonable amount of time birding and searching for mammals, mostly accompanied by my understanding but long suffering girlfriend. The first three nights were spent in Carrbridge, Speyside allowing us to explore the Findhorn Valley, Abernethy Forest and the Moray Firth area. For the remainder of the week we were based at Glenfinnan on the west coast of Scotland giving us access to Ardnamurchan and the Isle of Skye. While the weather could have been much worse, for the majority of the week we had to endure rain showers, mixed with sunny spells and low cloud. Temperatures were mild for the time of year. Accommodation/Food I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dalrachney Lodge (01479 841252) in Carrbridge for good food and hospitality. Glenfinnan Hotel (01397 722235) in Glenfinnan were also very accommodating and their bar meals were excellent. Unfortunately, this hotel is situated a little far from the mammal hotspots on the Ardnamurchan Peninsular so I would be reluctant to use them again purely for this reason. We had a couple of pre-night drive pub meals in Strontian, Ardnamurchan. The Ben View Hotel was far superior to The Strontian, in terms of both service and quality.
