(Jyväskylä Studies in Humanities ISSN ISBN Diss In the past, exploration of music has focused on analysis by formalists, refferentialists and through social, semiotic and anthropological viewpoints including Schenkerian-Yeston (1977), Semiotic-Eco (1977), and Motivic-Ruwet (1987). Although each has its merits in the formal analysis of music, few explore genre identification. In musical genre studies the exploration of musical, paramusical (extramusical) and perceptual elements are essential to facilitate a full understanding of the subject area. Johnson in Zorn supports such a perspective in his argument for a holistic approach to musical analysis (Zorn 2000:29). The multidisciplinary nature of music and the discourses embodied in its creation, development and dissemination utilise a range of signifiers for identification advocating the utilisation of a “hybrid” (Wickens 1999) methodology combining quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Atom and His Package Possibly the smallest band on the list, Atom & his Package consists of Adam Goren (Atom) and his package (a Yamaha music sequencer) make funny punk songs utilising many of of the package's hundreds of instruments about the metric system, the lead singer of Judas Priest and what Jewish people do on Christmas. Now moved on to other projects, Atom will remain the person who told the world Anarchy Means That I Litter, The Palestinians Are Not the Same Thing as the Rebel Alliance Jackass, and If You Own The Washington Redskins, You're a ****. Ghost Mice With only two members in this folk/punk band their voices and their music can be heard along with such pride. This band is one of the greatest to come out of the scene because of their abrasive acoustic style. The band consists of a male guitarist (I don't know his name) and Hannah who plays the violin. They are successful and very well should be because it's hard to 99 when you have such little to work with. This band is off Plan It X records and they put on a fantastic show. Not only is the band one of the leaders of the new genre called folk/punk but I'm sure there is going to be very big things to come from them and it will always be from the heart. Defiance, Ohio Defiance, Ohio are perhaps one of the most compassionate and energetic leaders of the "folk/punk" movement. Their clever lyrics accompanied by fast, melodic, acoustic guitars make them very enjoyable to listen to.

Thanks to Jeff Wison for the outstanding New Release Info dancing kids drawing, originally created for the the Pizzafest T-shirts. That cat can draw... As you can recall from MP Days of Yore, Pizzafest was gonna be a big show and pizzafeed with participants getting a free shirt, but the venue got paranoid about security, costs escalated, band avail- abilities got shaky, and the event was cancelled. Fortunately, it was replaced by not one but two “Mutant Fest” type of events: Cincinnati, OH in August (hosted by Dave Spodie of The Connie Dungs) and Columbus, OH in October (hosted by Eddie of The Proms). The bottom line is this: if you wanna have pop-punk events to attend this summer, people need to Do It Yourself. Get out there and independently organize your own Mutant Fest-type of deal! It would seem that there would be enough people and bands in the NY/NJ/PA area and possibly also in the Pacific Northwest—in addition to room for shows in the heartland of the pop-punk world, the midwest. There are rumors of a possible Connie Dungs/Dirt Bike Annie mini-tour this summer, how great would it be to tie into that? Revista Brasileira de Estudos da Canção – ISSN 2238-1198 Natal, n.2, jul-dez 2012. www.rbec.ect.ufrn.br Green Day: Rock Discourse and Dwindling Authenticities Mike Brocken [email protected] “Be childish. Be irresponsible. Be disrespectful. Be everything this society hates” (Malcolm McLaren in Savage, 1991, p.44) Discourses between prominent rock bands and their audiences are amongst the most fundamental and distinguishing marks of modern American history. Yet the multifarious origins of such dialogues, debates and disputes have remained somewhat under-researched by popular music historians. Perhaps within the extensive continuum of post-WWII American cultural contexts, the transformation of youth cultures via rock ‘n’ roll and (later) hard rock, progressive rock and punk rock music was so affective (and historically rapid) that the rock past and the historiography of that past both appear almost self-explanatory (despite the distinction being that the latter is not something that was, but something that popular music historians actually do). Sound, and sound media, now marginalised in relation with the visual, was for many a synergy of vast proportions. One would not wish to overstate the significance attached to particular musical “movements”, for those involved are seldom aware of the contemporary cultural status of their activities, while others who consider themselves to be out-with a coterie are often considered by others to be willingly within. Nevertheless the cultural resonances of popular (in our case particularly rock) music in the late-1960s and early-1970s, in the US were substantial. Such reverberations present the popular music historian with useful illustrations of particular aspects of identity formed in the United States through popular music, in relation to the significance and mapping of the self.
