FLYERS VS. SABRES

This series is the third and fourth of eight games between the clubs this season.

Mon. January 18 vs. Buffalo 6-1 L Tue. January 19 vs. Buffalo 3-0 W Sat. February 27 @ Buffalo 1:00 PM Sun. February 28 @ Buffalo 3:00 PM Tue. March 9 vs. Buffalo 7:00 PM Mon. March 29 @ Buffalo 7:00 PM Wed. March 31 @ Buffalo 7:30 PM Sun. April 11 vs. Buffalo 2:00 PM

The Flyers and Sabres have never played more than six times in a season. They did so in each of the Sabres’ first two seasons in the league, 1970-71 and 1971-72. They have not met each other more than four times in a season since the 1978-79 campaign, when they played five times. The Flyers have beaten Buffalo twice in each of the last four seasons and at least twice in nine of the last 12 seasons.

This is also the first time the Flyers and Sabres have ever competed in the same division. Even upon Buffalo’s placement in the East Division when they joined the league in 1970, the Flyers remained in the West Division with the other five teams from the 1967 expansion. This structure remained in place until the realignment that came with the 1974 expansion, when the Flyers were placed in the Patrick Division and the Sabres in the Adams Division.

SEASON SERIES

LAST GAME

Wednesday, February 24, 2021 – Flyers 4, NY Rangers 3 at Wells Fargo Center: A strong start paced the Flyers to a first-intermission lead and they were able to hold off the Rangers the rest of the way to take the one-goal victory. Erik Gustafsson started off the scoring 7:48 into the first period off an assist from Shayne Gostisbehere; after the Rangers tied it on a power play goal by Chris Kreider less than two minutes later, Gustafsson returned the favor when he set up Gostisbehere for a power play goal with 4:29 left in the period. James van Riemsdyk potted a power play goal 4:05 into the second, but it was matched by Kreider almost exactly four minutes later. Kevin Hayes then picked up the eventual game-winner with 5:23 left in the second period, making it 4-2 at the second intermission. Kreider completed the hat trick 3:27 into the third, but it was the last puck Brian Elliott would let by as he took the win with 24 saves. Igor Shesterkin made 35 saves in the loss. Stars of the Game: 1 – Claude Giroux; 2 – Chris Kreider; 3 – Shayne Gostisbehere.

The Flyers had 39 shots on goal in the game, eclipsing their previous season high of 31 and getting towards the neighborhood of doubling their season average of 23.3 shots per game through their first 15 contests. They had 72 total shot attempts to the Rangers’ 50.

Claude Giroux returned to the ice for the first time since February 7. He led the Flyers with eight shots on goal, 12 total shot attempts, three points (all assists) and went 8-for-11 on faceoffs in taking first star honors. It was his 903rd career game, matching Bill Barber for second most in franchise history.

Kevin Hayes and Shayne Gostisbehere each had six shots on goal; Hayes had eight total attempts, while Gostisbehere had nine.

Erik Gustafsson scored his first goal as a Flyer and had a two-point game (1G, 1A), as did Gostisbehere.

Chris Kreider’s hat trick was the third allowed by the Flyers this season. Per NHL Stats &Information, it’s the first time the Flyers have allowed three hat tricks within the first 16 games of a season.

Nicolas Aube-Kubel led the Flyers with six hits. He played a career-high 18:12, surpassing his previous high of 16:31 done in the game between the two teams here last Thursday; his last three games (including Sunday vs. BOS) have been the three highest ice times of his career. He also had a shot on goal, blocked two NY shots and was a plus-1.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

This weekend’s games are the start of 40 games over the final 73 days of the season for the Flyers, barring any further schedule changes. They have 17 games over the 31 days of March and 15 games over the 30 days of April.

Flyers captain Claude Giroux is slated to play his 904th career game tonight, which will move him past Bill Barber into second place in franchise history in games played. Giroux saw his consecutive game streak come to an end at 328 games on February 18 due to his stay on the NHL COVID protocol list. Giroux has only missed 18 games since joining the Flyers on a full-time basis on December 26, 2008.

With Jake Voracek also among the Flyers on the COVID protocol list, the February 18 game was the first time in just under 12 years that the Flyers took the ice with neither Giroux nor Voracek in the lineup. The last time that happened before Thursday was March 1, 2009 at New Jersey, which came while Giroux was on his final AHL loan to the then-Philadelphia Phantoms. One of the two players had appeared in 889 games the Flyers had played between then and Feb. 18.

Ivan Provorov now solely holds the sixth-longest active streak in the NHL at 331 games. Provorov has appeared in every game since the start of the 2016-17 season, his rookie campaign. Per NHL Stats and Information, Provorov has set an NHL record for the most consecutive games played by a defenseman from the start of a career for the same team, eclipsing the 330 that Dan Girardi played for the Rangers from the start of his career in January 2007 through January 2011.

Provorov is averaging 25:43 of ice time per game this season, which ranks fourth in the NHL. He has two goals and six assists for eight points, and has picked up four of those assists on the power play.

James van Riemsdyk has nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points through the first 16 games, which is good for ninth in the league in scoring. He is tied for second in the league with seven power play goals. van Riemsdyk picked up his 500th career point in Sunday’s game at Lake Tahoe, which was his seventh multi-point game of the season. He has points in 12 of the Flyers’ 16 games this year.

Vigneault led the Flyers to one of the NHL’s best turnarounds in 2019-20. At the time of the NHL’s pause of the season due to COVID-19, the Flyers had played 69 games and were 41-21-7 for 89 points, good for the sixth-best record in the league and fourth-best in the Eastern Conference. Vigneault was the runner-up in voting for the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year for his work in engineering the turnaround.

Vigneault enters the 2020-21 season with 1,285 games of experience as an NHL head coach over parts of 17 seasons. Prior to coming to Philadelphia, he served as the head coach of the New York Rangers for five seasons (2013-18), the Vancouver Canucks for seven seasons (2006-13) and the Montreal Canadiens for parts of four seasons (1997-2000). He also served as the head coach for Team Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Championships in Slovakia, guiding the squad to a silver medal.
