ROYAL LYTHAM ST ANNES GOLF: THE OPEN 2012

19 TH – 22 ND JULY 2012

Tickets from £60.00. Visit WWW.THEOPEN.COM to book HASSRA Leeds are giving their members the unique chance to watch The Open live on one of the days at a subsidised price. The course at Royal Lytham & St Annes was built in 1897 and quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest, and most exacting links golf courses in Britain. Though a relatively short course, the routing of the holes and the huge number of bunkers — some 200 in all — make it one of the most challenging of the Open venues. This Lancashire course could hardly have had a better introduction to Championship golf than the victory by legendary American amateur Bobby Jones when The Open was first played there in 1926. Bobby Locke (1952), Peter Thomson (1958) and Bob Charles (1963) were the next three winners before Tony Jacklin signalled the revival of British golf in 1969 with the first home victory for 18 years. Renowned players such as Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Watson, Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Tiger Woods have all played and won on this prodigious course.

OFFER - HASSRA Subsidy £20 per member/associate member

HASSRA Leeds invite you to organise your own tickets, enjoy the event and provide proof of purchase and HASSRA Leeds membership for each ticket after the event to receive the advertised refund on the cost of your ticket. HASSRA LEEDS MYSTERY TRIP - REVIEW

24-25 March 2012

Once again Group Choice provided HASSRA Leeds with a wonderful trip to a number of unknown locations. Their Saturday journey took them to Melton Mowbray and Oundle (a village in Northamptonshire) before arriving at The Kettering Park & Spa 4* hotel. Trippers reported lovely rooms, comfortable beds and enjoyable evening meal, along with the swimming pool, steam room, sauna and spa. The very friendly manager greeted everyone on the coach and then waved them all off again after a delicious breakfast with free bottles of mineral water. Sunday saw our intrepid travellers soaking up the sun in Lichfield and then on to the Wedgewood pottery factory near Stoke on Trent.

We hope this review may give you an idea of the quality offered by HASSRA Leeds and Group Choice, so if you see a future advertised event you can be assured of it receiving the same careful planning and attention to achieve the best possible results.

HASSRA Leeds Newsletter - April - 29 Hassra Leeds Wine Club

Next event: Thursday 10th May 5.30pm in the Restaurant Meet from 5.00pm in the WoodPecker Bar

Presented by Paul Gilbert New World Wines, Old World Vines Chiles isolation means that they are still making affordable wines from the vine stock imported from Europe in the early 19th century. The wines are made by both the old wine families of Chile and some newer foreign companies such as Miguel Torres.

After a recent visit I will be presenting 6 wines, 2 white and 4 red, comparing the old established and newer companies.

This is a low to medium event, around £10 for HASSRA Leeds members.

Whats Coming Up?

Friday 25th May : The Italian Wine Specialist presented by Bat & Bottle * This event will be presented by Ben Robson, a name which a number of you will recognize as he has presented to HASSRA Leeds on previous occasions, which, without exception, have been well received by those lucky enough to attend those tastings.

It goes without saying that we shall be treated to a varied selection of White and Red Italian wines presented by a man who "knows his stuff" and of course his wines and indeed the wine makers. Depending on numbers, there will be 5/6 wines and since this is a "high" event, deposits will be required to ensure we get the numbers right. *As this is a High price event places need to be booked with a £10 deposit by 13th April.

SPECIAL OFFER REMINDER : Don’t forget our special offer : Any HASSRA Leeds member who attends the wine club for the first time pays only half price for the event. And if you decide you like it enough to join the club, the night is free. You can just turn up on the night, but it helps our planning to know potential numbers in advance, so if you would like to join us, or you’d like more information, please contact one of the committee.

Making our way over the peat moor of Wolf Fell we then descend steeply down the ‘cone’ of Parlick and back to the village. If the weather is not suitable for climbing up to the moors, we will do an alternative lower level walk of similar length.

Meeting point and time Meet at 10.15 in the car park at Chipping (Postcode PR3 2QH) for a prompt start at 10.30. It is the only car park in a small village and is reached by driving through the village, past the church and café – the car park is on the right.

Transport There is infrequent public transport to this walk, and car sharing is recommended. Please let the leader know if you would like/could offer a lift.

Lunch Please bring a packed lunch and snacks as there is no pub en-route. At the end of the walk there are several pubs in the village (but may not be serving food at the time of our return) and the excellent Cobbled Café is open until 5pm. For those who are able to arrive a little earlier for the walk the café is open from 10am.

Clothing We recommend that you wear walking boots or stout shoes and ensure that you are suitably clothed and carry waterproofs and a spare warm layer in your rucksack.

To book your place on this walk If you would like to join us, please let me know by Thursday 19 April . Contact details are [email protected] Tel: 01253 396484 / 07725 254262

Have a Go at Fishing

Quarry House Angling Club Open Day Saturday 21st July 2012

Fishing is the largest participative activity in the country; why not find out what you have been missing? Perhaps you’ve dabbled before and would like to get back into it?

The Quarry House Angling Club has arranged its sixth open day at Sunrise Lakes near Harrogate for you to do just that. You, your partner or any member of your family are cordially invited to join club members and try your hand at the art of coarse fishing – accompanied children are especially welcome.

Members of the club will be in attendance between 10am to 3.00pm to advise you just come down and spend as long as you like. All licences, tackle and bait will be supplied – please wear suitable clothing and footwear!

Last year 18 people attended and everyone caught fish, Debbie Martin who attended with her husband and two sons said “ We had a thoroughly enjoyable day. The spot we were situated at was ideal, nice still water that was perfect for the children to try their hand at fishing. They had never fished before but were given expert tuition on the day and were well looked after by the volunteer helpers including the odd bacon butty!

So if you are interested please let George Roe ext 0113 2324244 or John Douglas ext 0113 2327574 know in advance.

Directions Take the A661 to Spofforth at the round- about in the middle of the village turn to go past the Newsagents. Continue through village passing the Castle on left, as you come out of village and the road narrows take the next left. You're now on Haggs Road. Pass the golf club on the left and the turn off to the fishery is the next left between two telegraph poles. Follow the signs to the fishery approx' 1 ¼ miles.

HASSRA Five-a-Side Competition 2012 th Friday 15 June

HASSRA has generously agreed to support another competition at the John Charles Centre this summer. Who can forget last year’s day out? The rain. The soggy scoresheets. The lavish buffet. The way the Captain Haddock Fan Club defied the critics and raced to the semi-finals, only to lose, unluckily, to the eventual winners.

We’ll follow the same format as last year to maximise the number of games. I expect that there will be two leagues and then the winners and runners-up playing in the semis. Teams will have a maximum of seven players and there will be a £21 per team entry fee. Cheques, made payable to HASSRA Leeds should be sent to Peter Blinston, Room 5W09, QH. Cheques should be with Peter by Friday 1st June. If you don’t pay you don’t play!

This year we need to be better organised in terms of nominating referees and keeping to the timetable. I want team captains to be more engaged this year in helping the tournament run smoothly. I’m going to hire a marquee so at least we’ll have somewhere dry to wait between games. If anyone, preferably a non-player, would like to volunteer to keep the scores it would be a great help.

All players must be HASSRA members. You should, subject to line manager approval, be able to get special leave to take part. Please let me have expressions of interest by 16 th March with full details by 25 th May. My e-mail address is [email protected]

HASSRA Leeds Newsletter - April - 51 BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS HASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity to

participate in events. The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form. 1. Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the date first advertised, including proposed events where expressions of interest are being

requested. 2. Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room, submit their applications together, and determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of the group via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and

conditions.

3. A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer. 4. Once the closing date is reached, the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined. Where

there are sufficient places for all applicants, then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed. 5. Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travelers will be liable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled). Full price means the undiscounted "non-member" price. Where necessary, HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes but travellers need to be aware that the cost of

insurance, (if purchased), is non-refundable. 6. Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the persons travelling. It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you

do not purchase the insurance offered. 7. Single supplements. There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a single room. Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the same sex, the organiser will arrange for pairing. If an individual has indicated that they

are willing to share, they will not have to pay a single supplement even if no pair is available. 8. Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available, a random draw of application forms will determine those successful in receiving a place, subject to Clause 8. Cheques accompanying these applications will then be processed. Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to

determine the order of the reserve list. 9. The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot. An organiser is the person who arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee, whether or not s/he is a

member of the Committee. 10. Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip, if that trip is subsequently confirmed, applications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before any unfilled places on the trip are advertised. On these occasions, once the

closing date is reached, remaining places will be filled on a first come first served basis. 11. Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip, to the same destination, and will be given priority for available spaces.

12. Applications from solely non-member groups, i.e. not accompanying a full HASSRA member, wishing to participate in an event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has

passed. 13. The priority order will be: a) Organiser +1, b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if

necessary), c) Prior registered interest (ballot if necessary), d) Other Members, e) Non Member groups. 14. Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion for associate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment, on or before the closing date for the trip. Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing the application. The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips. Any such requirements will be notified in the advertisement. Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner while attending HASSRA sponsored trips and events. Formal complaints may prejudice an individual's eligibility for future trips.
