    30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. Still, in a rather surprising programming decision NBC cancelled the drama series, renewed the comedy instead and later incorporated 30 Rock into its Thursday night line-up2 called “Comedy Night Done Right.”3 Here the show has been aired between other single-camera-comedy shows which, like 30 Rock, 1 | Aaron Sorkin has aEntwurf short cameo in “Plan B” (S5E18), in which he meets Liz Lemon as they both apply for the same writing job: Liz: Do I know you? The meeting had been advertised as one of protest against the selective draft law, but it turned out to be a very lame denunciation of the Government, of militarism which, all the speakers said, was about to grip America about the throat, and utterances along similar lines. Not one of the speakers advised anybody not to register today, nor did they ask their followers to refuse to join the colors, if they are drawn in the draft. More than 15,000 persons were massed in the streets outside the building, but at least half of these were there through curiosity and not through sympathy with the I. W. W. anarchist propaganda. It was after the meeting that the one big row of the evening occurred. It practically amounted to a riot for about fifteen minutes, and was precipitated when several anarchists and other agitators jeered a passing detachment of unarmed National Guardsmen. Someone shouted that the guardsmen were "a lot of bums," and then others began to shout "Hit them!" The fighting followed, and when it was all over ten men and 1 one woman were under arrest for the part they played in the demonstration.

    CAST BIOS JOHN LARROQUETTE (Jack Landry) – Five-time Emmy® Award winner John Larroquette has starred in the television comedies “Night Court,” “The John Larroquette Show,” “Payne” and, most recently, “Happy Family.” He displayed his dramatic side with an Emmy® winning guest-starring stint on “The Practice.” He co-starred in the miniseries “Tenth Kingdom” and starred in and executive produced the telefilm “One Special Victory.” Larroquette has had numerous memorable roles in feature films including “Blind Date,” “Summer Rental,” “Stripes,” “Choose Me,” “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock,” “Altered States,” “Cat People,” and “Twilight Zone: The Movie.” Born and raised in New Orleans, Larroquette was an only child who had studied music for 11 years by the time he was 17. He loved to write, considered entering the priesthood, had a talent for mimicry, and ultimately won a drama scholarship. Joining the Naval Reserve to satisfy his wanderlust, Larroquette always returned home to New Orleans, where he worked as an FM disc jockey.
