We’re working along two business strategies: first, striving to eliminate waste of all kinds – energy, water, and materials – to improve efficiency in our operations; second, ensuring we have long-term access to the resources required to make our products through sustainable sourcing programs. We are actively working to achieve these goals by 2020: reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% per pound of product produced and reduce water use by 20% per pound of product produced. We also are committed to continuing our zero waste-to-landfill journey while directing materials to the highest and best use. We work to lead the industry in packaging for sustainable systems, with continuous improvement of design and understanding the role packaging plays in preventing food waste. Rationale for this coverage Agriculture is a major user of ground and surface water in the U.S., accounting for approximately 80 percent of the nation’s water use. Conagra Brands’ sustainable agriculture program focuses on managing water use for crops where we have direct relationships with growers, including tomatoes for our Hunt’s® canned tomato products. For tomato growers, we annually track the percentage of growers that utilize drip irrigation systems. Conagra Brands Hazard Communication Policy and Environment, Health & Safety Manual outline’s the process for identifying and classifying potential water pollutants that may have detrimental impacts over water bodies and ecosystems. In our case, potential water pollutants would be any hazardous chemicals formed during processing, storage and distribution.

Each Conagra Brands facility maintains a list of hazardous chemicals with supplemented Safety Data Sheets (SDS). All chemicals and SDS are captured in a corporatewide on-line storage system. Through an established chemical clearance process, each department assigns an employee responsible for tracking chemicals. Employees are responsible for determining if incoming chemicals are in the corporate system. If not in system, chemical risks to health and environment are reviewed and evaluated to determine hazard classification in accordance with NFPA 704. If needed, proper documentation is added to the online-system and facility filing. To maintain a robust process, our health and safety team audits each of our facilities to ensure compliance with safety regulations and corporate policies. Any corrective actions are communicated for quick resolution.

As we rely on the availability of quality water resources to grow raw ingredients and process finished goods, considering the impacts on water bodies, ecosystems and human health caused by potential pollutants is of utmost importance. Our Environment, Health & Safety team members who are responsible for chemical clearance are trained in basic hazard identification to determine which chemicals pose potential hazards to ecosystems and human health. Ecosystem-related impacts regularly considered include; aquatic ecotoxicity, aquatic acidification, and aquatic eutrophication. Aqueduct risk results identify three high risk locations, representing just over three percent of our total annual direct water use. Our approach to setting targets/goals is based targets at the on industry research, a comparison to peers and current water usage. Due to the continually changing nature of production at and goals corporate individual facilities, Conagra Brands chooses to place greater emphasis and focus on our 2020 company-wide target. Conagra Business level Brands’ set a 2020 intensity-based water reduction target to reduce water use per unit of production by 20%. Beginning in FY12, level Goals are Conagra Brands set site specific water use intensity reduction targets. That year we begin to measure and track water use per pound specific monitored of production. For each of our manufacturing facilities, we track direct water use on a monthly basis, charting progress towards site- targets at the specific, year-over-year reduction goals that are set as part of the annual planning process. Having a very diverse product portfolio, and/or corporate there’s a wide range of water used to prepare different foods. Therefore, our facilities water use reduction goals vary based on goals level opportunity. For example, some of the foods we make — such as peanut butter— requires very little process water. Others are much Site/facility more water intensive, either in actual food preparation or sanitation requirements. This kind of insight allows us to make strategic specific decisions about where and how we focus our resources. Through the execution of several water-reduction projects, Conagra Brands targets is currently on track to meet our 2020 intensity-based water reduction target. The progress is monitored and communicated monthly and/or by Corporate. We report progress towards annual water use reduction goals to our operations leadership team as part of the period goals review, along with other sustainability metrics. Progress towards these goals is included in operations leadership and plant management performance appraisals.

Description of target Our 2020 Sustainability Vision outlines measurable Objectives, including the elimination of all forms of waste and ensuring long- term access to the resources required to make our products. To maximize water use efficiency while emphasizing sustainable water management practices, Conagra Brands has set an intensity-based target to reduce water use per pound of production by 20 percent by 2020. In FY08, the water use intensity was 0.7, reported as 1,000 gallons of water used per pound production. To reach our 2020 Sustainability vision requires Conagra Brands to have a water intensity of 0.55. In FY17, Conagra Brands water intensity was 0.64, equating to a 7.6 percent decrease in water use per pound of product produced. As of FY17, Conagra Brands achieved 38 percent of the 2020 target.

Please explain As of FY17, Conagra Brands achieved 38 percent of the 2020 intensity-based water reduction target. The progress at the end of FY17 is not indicative of the progress Conagra Brands has made with respect to water reduction. Due to changes in the footprint of the manufacturing facilities in the network, the end of FY17 progress is much lower than where we are currently trending. Based on current data, Conagra Brands is on track to meet the 2020 goal.

Description of goal In being a good environmental steward, Conagra Brands 2020 Sustainability vision includes a goal to actively address water risk at the corporate level. Beginning in FY12, Conagra Brands set site specific water use intensity reduction targets. Projects implemented to reduce water include installing water meters, recirculating water used to cool equipment and installing a holding tank to maximize the use of reclaimed water from tomatoes. Conagra Brands employs a custom in-house risk mapping tool that monitors environmental items including extreme weather (hurricanes, snow, tornados and storms) and drought conditions impacting our supply chain. Each one of our supplier locations in the US is electronically mapped and can be cross-referenced with the latest published US government data on drought conditions (National Drought Mitigation Center) and in the US and around the world for extreme weather events (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association & World Meteorological Organization). Our risk management team conducts an analysis on each supplier location in this database once a year, and communicates threats to our R&D and procurement teams to influence product design and manufacturing decisions. The risk management team also tracks weather-related transportation disruptions that impact our business in real time, and in 2017 this tool helped us track and assess transportation impacts of hurricanes Irma and Harvey in the US Southeast.

Indicators used to assess progress of our in-house risk mapping tool include the successful use of the tool in real-time to track water-related disruptions and take necessary action. Description of linkage/tradeoff Single-pass cooling is more energy efficient than recirculated water cooling systems. Our Hebrew National facility in Quincy, Michigan reduced more than 80 percent of total water use by recirculating water in new condensers. While the project greatly helped our glide path to reducing water use by 20 percent by 2020, it added additional electricity with mechanical cooling and fans to recycle the water. Reducing water usage and associated risks were prioritized over the less than 15 percent increase in Quincy’s greenhouse gas emissions per pound over the same period.

Policy or action In this instance, reducing over 80 percent of the water usage was significant for our Quincy, Michigan facility as this plant is Conagra Brands’ predominate water user located in an area of high risk. Although we manage these trade-offs on a case by case basis, reducing water usage and associated risks are typically prioritized. As areas of greater risk are identified, capital funds may be reallocated and financial thresholds may be adjusted to accommodate.
