This is the Annual Report for the period June 2018 – May 2019 of the Mother Teresa Women‘s University, Kodaikanal. The report gives all Academic, Administrative and other relevant details pertaining to the period June 2018 – May 2019. I take this occasion to thank all the members of the Executive Council, Academic Committee and Finance Committee for all their participation and contribution to the growth and development of the University and look forward to their continued advice and guidance.

INTRODUCTION

The Executive Council has great pleasure in presenting to the Academic

Committee, the Annual report for the period June 2018- May 2019 as per the requirement of the section 26 of Chapter IV of Mother Teresa Women‘s University Act 1984. The report outlines the various activities which have paved for the growth and development of the

University through the period June 2018 – May 2019 in the areas of Teaching, Research and

Extension; it provides a detailed account of various Academic Achievements, Introduction of new Innovative Courses, Conduct of Seminar/ Workshop/ Conferences at Regional, National and International levels and its extension activities.

The Mother Teresa Women‘s University aims to empower women at all levels. It has the pride of being the Third Women‘s University in India, and the only Women‘s University in Tamil Nadu.

Vision

Mother Teresa Women‟s University tirelessly strives to work towards the empowerment of women to achieve a society of equal status between men and women.

Mission

The mission of the University is to promote women‘s education at all levels in the State, to be a pioneer in the field of women empowerment, women‘s studies courses and research and to impart education of international standards.

The University has made commendable progress in its three frontiers of teaching, research and extension. The University since its inception in 1984 has steadily climbed from peak, from strength in its academic activities, setting new research goals, and undertaking innovative extension work and training. It will continue to serve as an apex body to promote women‘s equality through monitoring, extension, and research activities. It strives to strengthen its untiring and worthy task of empowering and developing the status of women nationwide.

The University offers courses in the disciplines of Computer applications, Biotechnology, Physics, Visual Communication, MBA, Home Science, Education, Economics, Tamil Studies, Historical Studies, Tourism Management, Mathematics, Chemistry, Sociology, Commerce, English and, Women Studies. These courses carry a specific curriculum designed with an orientation on women and gender studies. The traditional content has radically been transformed in keeping with the current trends to equip the intellectual needs of the modern women of present times. The Science courses run by the University has a specific orientation to empower women in emerging areas of science and technology.

The Staff have published in reputed journals, attended International and National seminars, Workshops and conferences and presented papers in addition to attending Orientation and Refresher Courses. Major and Minor Projects have been funded by different financial bodies such as the UGC, ICSR, MHRD, ICSSR and DEC, the Centre for Women‘s Studies. Entrepreneurial Development Centre, the NSS, CSS, YRC and RRC have carried out extension and skill training activities throughout the year.

In total 12 students of I MA, II MAPresidencyand MPHIL received First prize in various events. On the whole there were 11 events conducted out of which 5 were on stage and 6 were off stage. The students participated enthusiastically in all the events. There was a tough competition between the students. The session was highly informative.  Organised wild life safety awareness programme jointly with Wild life safety nets at Coimbatore centre on 28.1.2019. The Aim of Wild life safety nets is to professionalize the best practices in conserve the wildlife in Coimbatore .

 Organized Free Medical camp in collaboration with Thulasi Pharmacies India Pvt Ltd exclusively for Blood grouping and Hemoglobincheck up for our centre students on 01.02.2019.

 Organized Free Medical camp for our centre students in collaboration with Lotus Eye Hospital and Institute, Coimbatore exclusively for eye and dental check up on 12.02.2019. The total beneficiaries from the camp were 85 members.  One day International Conference on ―Advancement and Applications of Technology in Food and Textile Industry‖ at Mother Teresa Women‘s University Research and Extension Centre, Madurai on 22.1.2019. The conference comprised of four sessions that focused the participants to enrich their knowledge about the applications of technology in food and textile industries. The program has been a great success and positive feedback was received from participants.  one day International Conference on “NewTechnology and Innovative Research Trends in Textile and Fashion‖ at Mother Teresa Women‘s University Research and Extension Centre, Coimbatore on 4.3.2019.The conference comprised of three sessions that focused the participants to augment their knowledge on the technology aspects of textile industries.  One day International Conference on “ Advancements and Applications of Technology in Food and Textile Industry‖ at Mother Teresa Women‘s University Research and Extension Centre, Madurai on 22.01.2019.

Sheela, Child Development Project Officer, Periyanaikenpalayam Block, Coimbatore. The total beneficiaries were around 60.  Arranged for free diet counselling to the members of Regional Transport Office, Coimbatore during the multi speciality medical health check up camp organised by Thulasi Pharmacies India Private Limited on 27.9.2018.  Arranged for free diet counselling to the community in the multi speciality medical health check up camp organised by Thulasi Pharmacies India Private Limited on 30.9.2018 at Lions Club KalyanaMandapam, Sivananda colony, Coimbatore.  Arranged for Free Diabetic Counselling for the Community in lieu of World Diabetes Day Celebration2018 in association with Thulasi Pharmacies India Pvt Ltd on 14.11.2018 at their pharmacy shop outlet, R.S Puram, Coimbatore.

 Industrial Visit to RamaswamyChinnammmal Trust (Small Scale Food Processing Unit) was arranged on 27.7.2018 at Vadavalli, Coimbatore.Students got opportunity to receive hands on training for the preparation of masala powders, millet ladoo, millet icecream etc.  Industrial Visit to French Loaf (Baking Unit – Factory Outlet) was arranged on 31.8.2018 at Vedapatty, Coimbatore.The preparation of baked foods such as bread, apple pie pastry, bun, puff, varied types of cakes, cake pops, icing techniques, chocolate chips preparation and chocolate moulding were learnt by the students.  Arranged for an industrial visit to Proteman Vermicelli Company, Narasipuram Main Road, ParameshwaranPalayam Coimbatore on 5.2.2019. College of Knitwear Fashion, Tirupur was the resource person for the workshop. The

workshop encompass about drawing hair style, lines, strokes, use of water colour pencils

and different types of shadings in illustration.

1. Brief history of the Department and Objectives of the Department.

The Department of Management Studies was started in 2004. It offers MBA, M.Phil and Ph.D programme. The Department aims to develop leaders for a sustainable society and follows a student-centric approach. The Department is actively connecting with the corporate and the local community.

2. Important Achievements of the Department from 2016 – 17.  The Department focuses on training minority students and First Generation learners. Nearly 30 % of the students are from the Muslim minority and more than 90 % of the students are First Generation learners.  Since the University focuses on Women Development, in order to encourage students from weaker section to join our University, the University provides scholarships to students. More than 75 % of the students are benefitted out of this.  The Department particularly focuses on Women Entrepreneurs. The Department conducts regular meetings with rural Women Entrepreneurs regularly to give them guidance.  Publications of staff and research scholars in journals with high impact factor  Special focus on Industry-Academia linkages by Invited lectures on a regular basis from Industry experts. 3. CENTRE FOR GANDHIAN STUDIES

The centre for Gandhian Studies conducts certificate courses, research studies and extension activities on Gandhian Philosophy and Action. The Centre works under an Advisory Committee. The activities are streamlined and organized by the Professor in Sociology who is the Coordinator of the Centre. There is a fulltime researcher who served and assisted the activities done at the Centre. The Gandhian Study Centre was established with an aim to undertake research and disseminate Gandhian teachings, principles, path and ideals among the students, youth and general public of this region. The centre has a good collection of books on Gandhian Thought. The centre was approved and sponsored by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, under the „Epoch Making Social Thinkers of India (Special Studies) Scheme.‖

Department of Visual Communication, Mother Teresa Women‘s University Research and Extension centre, Saidapet organized a One Day Workshop titled ―The Art of Creating an Audio Essay‖-Writing for Contemporary Radio, on 01.08.2019. Dr. Jaisakthivel, Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism and Communication, University of Madras, the expert for the workshop gave hands-on training to the participants. 50 students from various colleges in Tamilnadu participated in this workshop. Dr. Lourdu Vesna, HOD, Department of Visual Communication delivered the Welcome address, Dr. Premalatha, Co-ordinator, Mother Teresa Women‘s University Research and Extension centre, Saidapet Felicitated the guest Dr. Jaisakthivel.

Department of Visual Communication, Mother Teresa Women‘s University Research and Extension Centre, Saidapet organized a One Day Workshop titled ―Non-Linear Editing‖, on 28.08.2019.R. Vignesh, Assistant Professor, Department of Media Studies; SRM University was the expert for the workshop. 28 students from various colleges around Chennai participated in the workshop. Dr. Lourdu Vesna, HOD, Department of Visual Communication delivered the Welcome address. The first session of the workshop gave theoretical inputs on editing. While afternoon session provided practical inputs. The session was very interactive so that the doubt of the students was clarified then and there.  Guest lecture on “Dietary Practices of Adolescent girls” on 9.07.2018 for Home Science Department students. Mrs Padma priya, Assistant professor, St Joseph‘s College (Arts and Science), Chennai was the guest speaker for the lecturer.

 Guest lecture on “Health and Longevity Secrets of Blue Zones” on 7.09.2018 for Home Science Department students. Mrs I. CiniEzhilarasi, Assistant professor, PG Department of Foods and Nutrition, Muthurangam Government Arts College, Vellore was the guest speaker for the lecturer.

 Guest lecture on Adolescent Nutritional and Menstrual Care for the centre students on 28.9.2018. Mrs. S. Kalpanadevi, Head, Public Relationship, Unicare International, Erode was the cheif guest.

 Organised a guest lecture entitled ―Innovations in Textile Weaves‖ on 9.10.2018. Mrs. T. Vijayalakshmi, HOD of Department of Costume Design and Fashion, PSGR Krishnammal College for women, Coimbatore was the chief guest. The session was highly informative.

 Organized Free Medical camp in collaboration with Thulasi Pharmacies India Pvt Ltd exclusively for Blood grouping and Hemoglobincheck up for our centre students on 01.02.2019.

 Organized Free Medical camp for our centre students in collaboration with Lotus Eye Hospital and Institute, Coimbatore exclusively for eye and dental check up on 12.02.2019. The total beneficiaries from the camp were 85 members.

 One day International Conference on ―Advancement and Applications of Technology in Food and Textile Industry‖ at Mother Teresa Women‘s University Research and Extension Centre, Madurai on 22.1.2019. The conference comprised of four sessions that focused the participants to enrich their knowledge about the applications of technology in food and textile industries. The program has been a great success and positive feedback was received from participants.

 one day International Conference on “NewTechnology and Innovative Research Trends in Textile and Fashion‖ at Mother Teresa Women‘s University Research and Extension Centre, Coimbatore on 4.3.2019.The conference comprised of three sessions that focused the participants to augment their knowledge on the technology aspects of textile industries.

STUDENTS ACTIVITIES  Arranged for free diet counselling to the community during the multi speciality medical health check up camp for Jain GnatiMahajan organised by Thulasi Pharmacies India Private Limited in association with Sri Coimbatore Jain Mahasangh at Shri Nehru Vidhyalaya, Robertson Road, R.S Puram, Coimbatore on 27.7.2018.

 Arranged for Nutrition Awareness Programme in lieu of National Nutrition Month 2018 for Adolescent girls studying in Government School, Kavundampalayam, Coimbatore in association with Mrs S. Sheela, Child Development Project Officer, Periyanaikenpalayam Block, Coimbatore. The total beneficiaries were around 60.

 Arranged for free diet counselling to the members of Regional Transport Office, Coimbatore during the multi speciality medical health check up camp organised by Thulasi Pharmacies India Private Limited on 27.9.2018.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT

 Industrial Visit to RamaswamyChinnammmal Trust (Small Scale Food Processing Unit) was arranged on 27.7.2018 at Vadavalli, Coimbatore.Students got opportunity to receive hands on training for the preparation of masala powders, millet ladoo, millet icecream etc.

 Industrial Visit to French Loaf (Baking Unit – Factory Outlet) was arranged on 31.8.2018 at Vedapatty, Coimbatore.The preparation of baked foods such as bread, apple pie pastry, bun, puff, varied types of cakes, cake pops, icing techniques, chocolate chips preparation and chocolate moulding were learnt by the students.

 Arranged for an industrial visit to Proteman Vermicelli Company, Narasipuram Main Road, Parameshwaran Palayam Coimbatore on 5.2.2019. The proteman company involved in the production of varied products likes

Erode on 07.2.2019 to attend free workshop on Fashion Illustration. Mr Suresh, NIFT

TEA College of Knitwear Fashion, Tirupur was the resource person for the workshop.

The workshop encompass about drawing hair style, lines, strokes, use of water colour

pencils and different types of shadings in illustration.

CLUB ACTIVITY

The Department of Home Science celebrated ―National Handloom Day‖ on 16th August 2018 at Mother Teresa women‘s university research and extension centre, Coimbatore. The students of Fashion designing and garment construction gave a vivid presentation for our centre students to create awareness about handloom.
