The Hammons Family: a Study of a West Virginia Family's Traditions The Hammons Family A Study of A West Virginia Family's Traditions This is the 2018 online version of the booklet for the Archive of Folk Culture sound recording AFS L65-L66, published in 1973. This edition of the booklet was designed and assembled by Carl Fleischhauer. The publication generally retains its 1973 voice. Bibliographical and discographical references have not been updated. An editorial review in 1997 adjusted the text to eliminate inconsistencies. Three items have been changed: the name of the fiddling uncle of Burl, Maggie, and Sherman is now spelled as it was pronounced, and as Edden Hammons himself spelled it; the title "Old Sledge" is identified as the name of a 19th-century card game; and an important minstrel-era publication of "Sandy Boys" is cited. Several photographs created or discovered after 1973 have been added. The Archive of Folk Song is referred to as the Archive of Folk Culture, its name since 1981. Maggie Hammons Parker passed away on July 26, 1987; Sherman Hammons, on September 3, 1988; and Burl Hammons, on January 2, 1993. The cover photograph depicts brothers Pete, Paris, and Neal (Cornelius) Hammons. The torn print on the cover is from the Hammons family's own collection, copied in 1972. In 2018, the Center obtained a digital version of an undamaged version of the same photograph, reproduced below. Meanwhile, information provided by Robert Cooper in 1980 identifies the photographer who made the 6x8-inch glass negative as Bob "Captain" Colebank of Sutton, West Virginia. Cooper quotes O.L. "Hink" Holcomb of Sutton as reporting that Colebank and Lory A. Holcomb were avid deer hunters who often sought out the Hammonses as hunting guides. Hink Holcomb said that, for this photograph, either Colebank or Lory Holcomb brought a phonograph and recordings of fiddle music with them to the Williams River and the phonograph was included in this picture. Since then we have visited them regularly, though not as often as we should like, and at some point in our acquaintance it dawned upon us that a full- length study of the family which brought together recordings, print, and photography, and which combined music, lore, oral history, documentary historical research, and general cultural reflections, offered us the best means at our disposal for conveying publicly something of the profound impact the family has had upon us. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

    Jim Rooney DAA Presentation by Art Menius IBMA World of Bluegrass Awards Luncheon September 29, 2016 Jim Rooney did me a big favor, writing. In It for the Long Run: A Musical Memoir, so that I could do this presentation. That’s being a friend. Jim is a man who has done it all while enjoying being in it for the long run in many relationships. Think of Bill Keith, Eric von Schmidt, or his eventual spouse Carol Langstaff. At Owensboro I remember Jim, tall and commanding, as his left hand powered the rhythm on a kick ass rendition of Six White Horses.” Not that he limited himself to Monroe covers. His interpretation of the Stones’ “No Expectations” became a go to song. His love for bluegrass began back in Massachusetts in the 1950s when he heard on a band called the Confederate Mountaineers at radio station WCOP. Inspired by the Lillys, Tex, and Stovepipe, it wasn’t too long before Jim was on WCOP himself and hooked on performing. At Amherst he met Bill Keith who would be a friend and musical partner for much of the next 60 years. In 1962, they recorded “Devils Dream” and “Sailor’s Hornpipe,” the first documentation of Bill’s chromatic style shortly before he joined the Blue Grass Boys. The tracks appeared on their Living on the Mountain LP. Their many collaborations would include the revolutionary Blue Velvet Band whose music spread worldwide person to person Mud Acres, and concerts and tours with many different aggregations and combinations. Jim enjoyed sharing a heritage award from the Boston Bluegrass Union and brought us to tears at Bill’s induction into the Hall of Fame.

The concert will be held from 5:30-7:30pm at the historic MacFarland-Hubbard House, headquarters of the West Virginia Humanities Council (1310 Kanawha Blvd. E) in Charleston. The free event will include a performance, question-answer session, and reception, and will be recorded and archived at the Library of Congress. Phyllis Marks, age 89, is according to folklorist Gerry Milnes the last active ballad singer in the state who “learned by heart” via oral transmission. Marks was recorded for the Library of Congress in 1978 and has performed for 62 years at the West Virginia State Folk Festival in her hometown of Glenville. Phyllis Marks is among West Virginia’s finest traditional musicians and a master of unaccompanied Appalachian ballad singing. Following her performance, Marks will give a brief interview with West Virginia University musicology professor and West Virginia native Travis Stimeling. “West Virginia Folklife Presents Ballad Singer Phyllis Marks” is supported by ZMM Architects & Engineers in Charleston and The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress’ 2016 Henry Reed Fund Award. Michael Newton, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill It has become an article of faith for many North Americans (especially white anglophones) that the pedigree of modern country-western music is “Celtic.” The logic seems run like this: country-western music emerged among people with a predominance of Scottish, Irish, and “Scotch-Irish” ancestry; Scotland and Ireland are presumably Celtic countries; ballads and the fiddle seem to be the threads of connectivity between these musical worlds; therefore, country-western music carries forth the “musical DNA” of Celtic heritage.
