he Swedes are entering their second season with Head Coach Paul Hubbard at the helm. Last year the team posted a 3-8 overall record and a KCAC finish of 3-6.

With a couple key returning players and slew of talented newcomers the Swedes looks to improve on their record from last year and really take off under Coach Hubbard’s leadership.

The squad has been hard at work throughout the spring and summer months to start the season off with a splash. The coaches and players alike are ready to begin Tand see their efforts paid off on the field. “This is the best time of the year as we get to see the fruits of our labors,” Coach Hubbard said. “We had really good spring that showed growth with our veterans. Our coaches did a great job with this recruiting class and I am anxious to see what these young men can do when they get on campus.”

Nathaniel Ocran, Anthony Jackson, and Peter Garza lead the Swedes on the offensive side of the ball. Ocran rushed for 476 yards last year and averaged 47.6 rushing yards per game. Jackson and Garza both made it into the end zone twice in 2015 and achieved an average of 14.7 and 11.4 yards per catch respec- tively. Justin Burns will be back anchoring the offensive line for the Swedes.

On defense, the Swedes return Rhett Mizer who ended the 2015 season third in tackles on the team with 44 solo and 70 total. The Swedes also return Bobby O’Neill who notched 22 solo, 39 total tackles, Malcolm Jenkins who also reached 22 solo tackles and a pick six in the 38-14 win over Friend. Dominic Dalmaso also had 25 solo tackles and 33 total. Javan Moore will be returning this season after being sidelined due to an injury. In just four games with the team Moore had 34 total tackles and an interception.

Overall, the Swedes have 12 starters returning and are bringing a class of just over 60 newcomers. The coaching staff looks to their newcomers to fill some of the holes left in their starting lineup and to their returners to help guide this young team.

“If the veterans can rise to the occasion and lead this team with some young guys pushing to fill some key rolls, I feel the goals of everyone associated with the program can be reached,” Coach Hubbard reflected.
