Rearymore cemetery inscriptions – The story of how they were documented

My maternal ancestors the Griffith family lived in the Mountmellick/Rosenallis area from at least as far back as the 18th century. The last member of the family in that area, my great grandfather Richard Griffith, a town clerk of Mountmellick, died in 1900. His widow returned to her parents in Dublin with her two daughters. In trying to find the place of burial of Richard Griffith, I searched all the cemeteries around the area, to no avail. A friend suggested looking for his obituary in the local newspaper of the time, where I discovered that the Griffith family plot was in Rearymore, an old cemetery between Rosenallis and Clonaslee. I revisited Rearymore cemetery, but could find no headstone for them. Many headstones in the cemetery are now fallen (or buried under vegetation). In 2018, I set about looking to see if there existed anywhere a list of the families buried in Rearymore, or a record of the inscriptions. Finding none in the libraries in either Mountmellick or Portlaoise, I asked the parish priest of Rosenallis, Father Thomas Walshe, if he knew of such a list. He directed me to Mr John Troy. John had in his possession a copy of the inscriptions which had been originally documented by Mr Ian Lee, a teacher in the old school in Reary, and his pupils, in the 1980’s. Mr Lee and his pupils had numbered all the graves and created a map. These inscriptions, and map, had subsequently come into the possession of a teacher in Rosenallis N.S., Ms Helen Callaghan, in 2002, and she had got her pupils to copy them out, as the originals had become very faded. It is this 2002 copy that John Troy kindly forwarded to me. As yet I have been unable to obtain a copy of the original inscriptions done in the handwriting of Ian Lee’s pupils. Great credit is due to Ian Lee for his foresight in initiating and organising the recording of the inscriptions in this historic graveyard. When I visited Rearymore cemetery in September 2019 with a view to checking some of the names on the graves, I realised afresh how important was the work done by these teachers and their pupils. For now many of the inscriptions which they had painstakingly documented were faded and illegible, lost forever to posterity but for their work. Much credit is due also to John Troy and the team of volunteers – Billy, Seamus, Ian and Ray McEvoy, Kevin and Martin Flynn, Rita and Pat Moran, and members of the Rosenallis and Clonaslee cemetery committees - who had found the cemetery in a state of neglect and worked and continue to work to keep it tidy. When I arrived there in 2019, some of the team had only the week before cut back the vegetation, and this along with the Indian summer weather that year made my task of locating graves easy. I strongly felt that these invaluable documents should be publicly available to assist those seeking to find the burial place of their ancestors. I have typed out and edited the children’s records, correcting any errors of spelling. Some of the surnames seem to have been incorrectly transcribed. In some cases I was able to find the correct name on my visit in 2019. If I was unsure of a name, I made an educated guess and put this in brackets with a question mark. I also found a number of undocumented graves, which I have included. Some of them I have numbered for ease of locating on the 1980’s map. Finally, I must thank my daughter Katie McCann for her invaluable assistance in typing, editing and formatting the inscriptions. I could not have completed this project without her help. My ‘genealogy buddies’ Joan Murphy and Muiris O’Reilly gave me encouragement and feedback in the final stages of bringing all the material together. The entire project has been a coming together of the work of many people. It is my hope that this pdf document will be of assistance to those seeking to locate the burial place of their ancestors.

The inscriptions obtained by Mr Ian Lee’s pupils in the 1980’s, and copied out by Ms Helen Callaghan’s pupils in 2002, are in standard font. Surnames appear in CAPITALS, and place names in italics.

The files of these inscriptions passed on to me in 2018 did not contain the inscriptions for graves 1 to 7 inclusive. These were obtained by me when I was in the cemetery in 2019 and are included in standard font. These graves 1-7 inclusive are marked in the original 1980s map.

Subsequent graves discovered by me in 2019, and not included in the 1980s survey, are written in bold type. Some of these I numbered for ease of location, according to what numbered graves they were near.

In addition, any corrections made by me to the children’s transcripts are written in bold type. Any I wasn’t sure of, and was unable to read from the headstone due to weathering, are followed by a (question mark).

I have included an alphabetical list of surnames for ease of locating.
