A MIDDLE study provides significantly greater privacy for participants; automatic manage- ment of opt-in and opt-out consent; lower cost for the researcher and funding institute; a larger base of participants; and faster determination of results. MIDDLE facilitates the use of mobile devices that can enable studies to be performed while partici- pants remain in their normal living environments, thus opening paradigm-shifting paths in the way one thinks about research methods. Furthermore, if a participant opts into many studies simultane- ously, all of the studies could automatically have access to individual-level longitudinal data shar- ing.

Obituary for Eileen Trczinski

We deeply regret the loss of our valued DIW/SOEP Research Professor and colleague Eileen Trczinski, who passed away in March 2013 after a short, serious illness. Eileen was Professor and Statistician at the School of Social Work at Wayne State University/USA. She was not only a long-term SOEP user who had visited the SOEP group regularly for many years but also a friend. Eileen received her PhD in Economics and Social Work from the University of Michigan in 1985 with specializations in labor economics and econometrics. She had more than 30 years of experience in survey design and analysis. She designed and conducted surveys, including longitudinal surveys, at the national, state, and local levels. She authored more than 50 publications and was working in the SOEP mainly on subjective wellbeing and labor market outcomes. For all those who would like to read more about Eileen’s work, please see: http://research. socialwork.wayne.edu/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=152&Itemid=95

Call for papers for the 7th MESS workshop

August 30 -31, 2013

We are pleased to announce the seventh MESS workshop on innovative aspects of Internet interviewing, and on research conducted in the LISS panel and Immigrant panel. We kindly invite you to submit a paper to be presented at this workshop. Please indicate in which of the following themes your presentation can be categorized:

1. Response behaviour and representativity in web surveys, Internet panels and mobile surveys Examples would be: Attrition effects specific for Internet panels, weights for Internet panels, models for longitudinal analysis, stimulating online response over time, special groups for Internet surveys (e.g. visually impaired), etc. 2. Questionnaire design for online datacollection, including mobile questionnaires Examples would be: visual design of online questionnaires, experiments with apps and mobile questionnaires, comparison of response effects in computer-based and mobile questionnaires 3. Challenges in linking Internet survey data to administrative data What are the challenges in linking (Internet) survey data to administrative data? What does linking bring us in addition to the analysis of the separate data sets. 4. Biomarker measures and innovative health measures The use of advanced measures of weight, blood pressure, activity, heart rate, the collecting of traditional biomarkers in online panels or in combination with online surveys. Also: The analysis of the high frequency data resulting from innovative health measures: How can we handle such large amount of data, what are appropriate models, etc. 5. New technology: smartphones, new devices, speech technology, GPS Examples would be: Mobility research using GPS data, combinations of visual and voice mode, speech technology, innovative and new designs, special experimental set-ups. Also: The analysis of GPS data: How to handle these privacy-sensitive data, what are appropriate models for it, etc. 6. Studies resulting from the MESS project Researches who have used the LISS panel or Immigrant panel to collect data, or who have used the data in the LISS data archive, are invited to present the results of their study.

Abstracts and papers can be submitted via email to Josette Janssen: [email protected], by June 15, 2013 at the latest. Submissions will be acknowledged by return email and acceptances will be communicated by July 1, 2013. For presenters of accepted papers travel and lodging costs associated with attending will be reimbursed.

The workshop will be held at a central location in The Netherlands.

DominiqueSocial Joye ( eSciences D s ) Brian Kleiner, Isabelle Renschler, Boris Wernli, Peter Farago, and Dominque Joye (eds) Understanding Research Infrastructures in the Social Sciences

This volume brings social science research infrastructures to the foreground and provides a concep- tual framework for understanding them. Key common denominators are that they provide public good resources for research, and that they are established to support research for the long-term. Research infrastructures are embedded in research practices and communities, at national and inter- national levels. They enhance the efficiency of the research process as well as fundamental aspects of the scientific method, for example, comparability, replication, and diffusion of knowledge and in- formation. The contributions within this book demonstrate that research infrastructures are triggering a major paradigm shift in the social sciences, with profound effects on the nature of knowledge production within and across disciplines. Indeed, they are in large part responsible for an invisible revolution that is affecting research and researchers in fundamental ways. The focus of this book is on charting and clarifying their functions and their impact with the goal of improving our understanding of their underlying mechanisms, their challenges, and their immense potential for advancing science.
