WHAT IS REIKI?

A GIFT OF LOVE. Love for yourself and others.

INTENT. Intent to help a living being for their highest good; to feel better.

COMPASSION. Compassion for you, your friends, family, animal companions, acquaintances, strangers.

TWO JAPANESE WORDS. “Rei” means a higher power; “ki” is life force energy ~ Spiritually guided life force energy.

ENERGY. This life force energy is all around us and radiates from all livings things. You can't see it, but you can feel it. It is the life force of animals and humans and other living beings. It's what keeps the body alive and affects physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well being. Energy, (ki), also radiates from Mother Earth, the sun, the moon, and the stars. This universal life force energy is also known as Reiki energy.

AN ANCIENT, TIBETAN HANDS-ON METHOD OF NATURAL HEALING. A safe and non-invasive method that encourages healing and well being. It is a system of attaining and promoting wholeness of mind, body, and spirit.

Reiki can be used alone or in conjunction with other types of healing or medical practices.

EMPOWERMENT. Reiki practitioners can give Reiki to themselves and others to feel better.

A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE. Reiki does not conflict with religious beliefs. People of any religion or worldview can use it.

Circle of Peace April 2013

HOW DOES REIKI WORK?

SIMPLY.

During a Reiki treatment…

The Reiki practitioner lays hands on or directly above the recipient’s body, or beams the Reiki to the recipient.

The Reiki energy flows through the Reiki practitioner to the recipient’s body.

The Reiki practitioner is the connection between the energy in the universe and the recipient.

THE ATTUNEMENT

To be able to share this beautiful Reiki energy with others, you will receive an attunement.

The attunement is a spiritual blessing that is passed from me to you.

The attunement opens and clears any blockages, allowing access to the Reiki energy that will flow through you to the recipient.

With the attunement you receive a higher or finer level of energy. As your energy bodies expand and adjust to your increased Ki (energy), you will be able to handle more energy, which allows you to open even further.

HOW CAN REIKI HELP MY ANIMAL COMPANIONS?

Animals are good for our soul. They keep us physically active. They help us to relieve stress, sadness, put a smile on our face. They teach children and adults about love, compassion, responsibility, respect. They help people who are lonely. They help people who are depressed; to get out of bed in the morning. They help people who are unable to see.

Reiki is a wonderful way to give back to our animal friends. As with humans, Reiki supports the animal body’s natural ability to heal itself on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels in the following ways:

LOVE. Reiki is another way to demonstrate your love for the animals in your circle of life.

Giving Reiki is a gift for you and your animal companion to “be” together. It deepens and strengthens the connection and communication between human and animal companion.

RELAXATION. Reiki allows the animal to “be”, allowing muscles to relax and increasing the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Relaxation increases circulation and sends more oxygen and nutrients into the body.

Circle of Peace April 2013

Reiki First Degree Manual 11

How Does Reiki Help My Animal Companions? cont’d.

RELIEF OF STRESS AND ANXIETY. Reiki promotes confidence and calm, reducing tension, worry, depression caused by a move, a loss, or abuse.

If stress and anxiety is not released in the body naturally, it can present itself in the physical body in the way of illness. Reiki energy clears negativity. Emotional issues can heal. Physical disease can begin to heal.

PAIN REDUCTION. Reiki helps to clear any blockages in the body, aiding in reduction of pain and speeding up the healing process.

Reiki works in conjunction with other medical treatments to reduce side effects and promote recovery.

PEACE OF MIND AND BODY. Reiki brings calm and quiet to your animal friend and to you; to an animal that is coming into the world or crossing over.

Circle of Peace April 2013

HOW DO I GIVE REIKI?

There are different methods to use when giving Reiki. They are the same for animals and humans. The method you choose will depend on the situation, the environment, and the recipient of the Reiki energy.

Hands-on Reiki. The physical placing of the hands on the recipient using various hand positions that cover parts of and/or the entire body.

Beaming Reiki Across the Room. This technique can be used when you are unable to get close to the recipient.

Animals ~ use to connect with an animal that is wild and/or not used to being touched, e.g. fish, a coyote or bird in your backyard; a hurt animal in the road; for scared, nervous or aggressive animals; for an animal that is in an enclosure, e.g. in a wildlife refuge, a pet store, hospital, zoo, or aquarium. It’s a good way to calm a nervous domestic animal such as a dog or cat before moving closer for hands-on treatment. Humans ~ use when you’re sitting in a meeting, at the grocery store, or if the person you’re treating it contagious or ill.

Reiki with Hands Hovering Over the Body. Place hands directly above the recipient’s body, without touching. The recipient will receive the same benefits as the hands-on method.

Animals ~ use when the animal is OK with your presence, but does not want to be touched, or the hands-on treatment is too intense for the animal. The animal will tell you if this is the case ~ you may get “the look”, the animal may shift their weight, tense up. Humans ~ use when the person you’re treating is uncomfortable with your hands being placed directly on the body; when treating the private parts of a recipient; the breasts, genital area, buttocks.

Distant Reiki This method can be given anywhere; you don’t need to be near the animal or human to give Reiki. The techniques of distant Reiki are covered in Reiki II training.

Group Reiki The recipient, whether human or animal, gets a surge of Reiki energy when multiple people give Reiki at the same time. Get together with other Reiki practitioners and give a Reiki treatment together. This amplifies the amount of love and healing that the recipient receives.

The Story of Reiki

Three individuals are responsible for developing and bringing the Reiki healing system to the West and into our lives. They are Dr. Mikao Usui, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, and Mrs. Hawayo Takata.

Dr. Mikao Usui. This history of Reiki begins with Usui, born in 1865 in Japan. Dr. Usui studied medicine, psychology and religion, along with various spiritual practices and philosophies from other cultures, including Christianity and .

In 1922, due to personal and business strife, he was led on a path to pursue his spiritual truth. He went on a journey to a sacred mountain in Japan called Mt. Kurama where he fasted and meditated for 21 days on the mountaintop. Usui had visited this mountain many times to meditate and seek enlightenment.

During this retreat, Usui had a profound experience ~ he “received” enlightenment and a wonderful gift ~ the ability to give healing to others without depleting his own energy ~ the simple, gentle system of Reiki.

Mikau Usui practiced and taught Reiki throughout Japan. He created a school where he taught and shared his spiritual experiences. His goal was to provide students with tools for their own healing and spiritual growth ~ tools to use each day to promote happiness and well being. These tools are:

 Reiki Principles or Ideals  Reiki Hand Positions  Meditation  Symbols  Attunement/Initiation Process

Mikao Usui died in 1926 of a stroke. Before he died, he trained 21 students at the Master Teacher level and asked Chujiro Hayashi, one of his students, to further develop the system of Reiki.

Dr. Chujiro Hayashi. Dr. Hayashi was a retired naval officer and a surgeon. He brought a medical approach to the practice of Reiki with his knowledge of anatomy and medicine. He created a manual of hand positions that treated different illnesses of the body and organs. He set up the first Reiki clinic, which brought Reiki healing into the medical world. Hayashi developed the process of passing on Reiki to students by using symbols and mantras during the attunement process.

In 1940, World War II began and Hayashi knew that he would be called back to the call of duty. He decided to end his life rather than be forced to kill people in military action. Before he died, he passed his leadership of Reiki to one of his students, Mrs. Hawayo Takata.

Reiki First Degree Manual 14

The Story of Reiki, cont’d.

Mrs. Hawayo Takata. Takata is responsible for bringing Reiki to the West from Japan. Her introduction to Reiki was through her own illnesses.

Mrs. Hawayo Takata was born in Hawaii in 1900. Her parents emigrated from Japan and worked hard on a sugar cane plantation in Hawaii. Takata married an employee of the plantation and had two daughters.

After her husband died of a heart attack in 1930, she worked hard to provide for her family, and suffered a nervous breakdown and severe physical problems. In 1935, she decided to travel to Japan to take care of her health and personal matters.

Weeks later as she was about to have surgery, she heard a voice saying “The operation is not necessary.” She heard it again on the operating table and before she was given anesthesia, she asked the surgeon if there was another way to heal. He told Takata about Hayashi’s Reiki clinic.

Takata lived at the clinic and received daily treatments. In four months, she was healed in mind, body, and spirit. She persuaded Hayashi to teach Reiki to her. She studied with Hayashi and brought the system back to her birthplace of Hawaii. Hayashi and his daughter followed her to Hawaii to help Takata set up a Reiki practice.

Before she died in 1980, Takata initiated 22 Reiki Masters.

Principles of Reiki

“Reiki not only heals diseases, but also amplifies innate abilities, balances the spirit, makes the body healthy, and thus helps achieve happiness.”

This quote was taken, and then translated, from Mikao Usui’s Memorial in Tokyo in 1927.

Usui presented these Principles to use as a tool, along with Reiki, for personal and spiritual growth. The Reiki Principles are five simple statements describing how to live ~ just for today. These principles are universal values and do not violate any one’s religion or religious ethics.

You may find other variations of the Reiki Principles; however, the meanings are essentially the same.

Just for today, I will let go of anger.

Just for today, I will let go of worry.

Just for today, I will honor my parents, teachers and elders.

Just for today, I will work honestly.

Just for today, I will be kind to all living things and myself.

Two more Principles that I follow each day:

Just for today, I will count my blessings.

Just for today, I will be humble.

Use the Principles that call to you, that you are comfortable with and feel right to you. Make your best effort to practice them each day. With more practice, comes more peace of mind and well being.

Degrees or Levels of Reiki

Three degrees of Reiki are taught traditionally.

First Degree Reiki The basic level. It is for those who want to learn how to heal themselves and others.

Four attunements are given in classes of 1 or 2 people. One attunement is given for a class of 3 or more people.

The course includes information on the definition of Reiki, its story, and what it does. Principles and ethical guidelines for using Reiki, as well as the specific hand positions, are also taught.

After you have received all four attunements, you are connected to the Reiki energy and are empowered with the ability to channel the Reiki energy to others.

Second Degree Reiki For those who have completed First Degree and have continuously been using Reiki for at least three months (or when the student feels ready emotionally and spiritually). It is for those individuals who wish to be able to give Reiki long distance (Distance Healing).

One attunement is given.

A specific method used for sending Reiki over distance to another being will be presented, along with information on the symbols used for distance healing and the healing of mental/emotional disorders.

Third Degree Reiki The Master/Teacher’s degree. For those who have completed Second Degree and who have been practicing it for at least nine months. It’s for individuals who wish to teach Reiki to others. This degree is for those who are committed to bringing love and healing into the circle of life ~ for themselves, others, animals and our earth.

You will learn a symbol that works on a spiritual level and receive one attunement.

Principles of Directing Reiki Energy

As a Reiki practitioner, it’s important to know, respect, and follow these principles.

Show respect. Ask permission to give Reiki to the recipient. In many cases, the human or the animal’s human has asked you for a Reiki session. Even so, with the animal, I also mentally and/or verbally ask permission.

Send the Reiki energy with the intent that it’s for the recipient’s highest good; that you’re an open and pure channel of Reiki energy and light.

Let go of the intent of “healing” the recipient. The Reiki energy does the healing; you are the connection to this healing energy.

The Reiki energy needs no directing from you; let it do its work and trust that it will go where it needs to go.

Don't judge the effectiveness, the energy is working.

Where awareness is focused, energy is concentrated and becomes manifested.

Honor the energy, yourself/intention and the recipient for the work performed.

A Reiki practitioner cannot promise that Reiki will cure a particular dis-ease, or promise any other results.

The Reiki practitioner is not in control of where the Reiki energy goes; it is not predictable.

Never diagnose an illness.

Never give advice.

Never prescribe anything.

Circle of Peace April 2013

Reiki First Degree Manual 18

Points to Remember

Love, Intent and Peace. That’s what Reiki is all about.

Reiki brings healing; healing brings Peace.

This is sacred work. Always treat the recipient and the process with great respect.

Ground yourself; never start a treatment when you’re angry or upset.

Reiki can never do harm.

No one can make a mistake.

Respect what you feel; you do not have to give Reiki to everyone. Remain true to yourself and trust your judgment.

Relax and remain aware of any changes in the feel in the palm of your hands. Do not concentrate too hard. Trust your instinctive feel, or intuition.

Do what feels right at the moment; allow your hands to travel where they wish to go; do not feel that you must follow each hand position.

If there are broken bones or open wounds, wait to treat with Reiki until the area has been set or stitched. The Reiki energy can heal the area too quickly and too much before the proper medical procedures need to be performed. Give Reiki to other areas until the procedures have been completed.

Use Reiki regularly after your attunements; it keeps your channels open and growing.

Reiki is not intended as a substitute for the advice and treatment of a veterinarian or medical professional. If you’re in any doubt about a medical condition, you should first consult your doctor.

Reiki First Degree Manual 19

Animals and Reiki

Animals dig Reiki!

Animals are very open and sensitive to the Reiki energy. They know exactly how much they need and where they need it.

Listen to the animal. Animals will tell you when a session is over; when they’re done. Animals will break off the contact energetically, or by leaving or getting restless.

If animals need more, they will come back and ask for more, perhaps again and again. You as the Reiki practitioner must trust and respect the animal’s decision ~ even if the session lasts only 10 minutes. If you’re treating an animal client, be sure and tell the animal’s human about this before the session begins; this helps to reduce any expectations.

It has been my experience that animals feel more comfortable and relaxed in their own environment, so I give the treatment in their home whenever possible.

You can “beam” the Reiki to animals that are wild and/or not used to being touched, to animals in a closed environment, or to aggressive or anxious animals. Be sure to thank the universe and the Reiki energy for directing itself to the animal.

To treat smaller animals such as birds, mice, hamsters ~ allow the animal to be surrounded in Reiki energy within your cupped hands; they’re unable to fly or run away. They will soon become quieter.

For animals that are in an enclosure, e.g. fish, place your hands around the tank and allow the energy to flow between your hands.

To treat larger animals, e.g. horses, cows; in order for them to receive a healthy dose of Reiki energy, it usually takes more time and more hand positions.

Generally, it’ a good idea to avoid working directly with areas of wounds or recent surgery, as these may still be too sensitive. Give Reiki to an area next to the wound.

You may also Reiki the animal’s food and water. This purifies and enhances the nutritional value of the food and provides residual Reiki energy to the animal when consumed.

Reiki First Degree Manual 20

Animals and Reiki, cont’d.

The following principles and guidelines for working with animals and Reiki were developed by Kathleen Prasad, Founder of Animal Reiki Source.

I believe and follow these words and wish to pass them along to you to use in whatever way you choose to practice Reiki ~ personal and/or business.

These principles will help to guide you with your Reiki practice with animals.

I believe the animals are equal partners in the healing process.

I honor the animals as being not only my clients, but also my teachers in the journey of healing.

I understand that all animals have physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects, to which Reiki can bring profound healing responses.

I believe that bringing Reiki to the human/animal relationship is transformational to the human view of the animal kingdom.

I dedicate myself to the virtues of humility, integrity, compassion and gratitude in my Reiki practice.

In working with the animals, follow these guidelines:

I work in partnership with the animal.

I always ask permission of the animal before beginning, and respect his or her decision to accept or refuse any treatment.

I listen intuitively and observe the animal's body language in determining the response.

I allow each animal to choose how to receive his or her treatment; thus each treatment could be a combination of hands-on, short distance and/or distant healing, depending on the animal's preference.

I let go of my expectations about how the treatment should progress and/or how the animal should behave during the treatment, and simply trust Reiki.

I accept the results of the treatment without judgment and with gratitude toward Reiki and the animal's openness and participation in the process.

The Reiki Session with Equines

One of the cool things about treating equines and all animals with Reiki is that they have no preconceptions, no judgment, no objectivity. They go with what they feel; their head doesn’t get in the way. Reiki helps to bring the equine back to better health on all levels and it’s a great way to encourage bonding with humans.

In my experience, ALL equines have responded to the Reiki energy, entering a state of relaxation.

Decide where you will give the Reiki treatment. It’s best to give the Reiki when it is not breakfast or dinnertime, and in a place that is quiet and with little distraction. It can be a paddock or stall. I prefer to have no ties between the equine and me. I use a halter only if it’s necessary, e.g. if the treatment is given in a larger space and the equine wanders off, or if the horse is on cross ties. However, in my experience, even in a large pasture or paddock, once the equine feels the Reiki energy, they choose to stay in my space with the energy.

A complete Reiki treatment on an average-sized horse can take up to 60-75 minutes; more or less depending on the size of the equine. And remember, listen to the animal. They will tell you when the session is over.

Before the treatment. Allow the equine to come to you. Give the equine time to smell you, get to know you, before doing any hands-on.

When you feel that the equine is OK with your presence, begin to stroke the equine, moving in a slow and respectful manner. Give a scratch in a favorite spot!

Honor and respect the equine and the Reiki process ~

Always mentally or verbally ask permission of the equine (even though in many cases the equine’s human has asked for Reiki). Ask the equine to show you where healing is needed.

Connect with the Reiki energy and the equine. Here’s some ideas on how to obtain the connection: Get quiet and detach yourself from distractions Take deep breaths; close your eyes; place your hand on your heart. State an intention or prayer, such as:  It is my intention that this animal receives the highest good from this session.  I pray that I may be a clear and open channel for the Reiki energy.  Thank you (angels, spirit guides, God, universe) for your presence today at my healing.  I pray that I give and receive Reiki with love, acceptance, and compassion.  I pray that I am surrounded and protected by the light and love of Reiki and its guides. Meditate. It brings peace and inspiration. It creates the space so that you can become conscious of your spiritual connection.

Circle of Peace April 2013

Reiki First Degree Manual 22

During the treatment. First “scan” the equine. This will give you an insight into areas of imbalance. Keep one hand on the equine and place your other hand directly above the equine’s body in their energy field. Steadily move your hand from their head to tail, then upper body to the feet. Feel and take note of any areas that pull in more energy through your hands or areas that have blockages. These areas may feel stagnant, warm or cold.

Note: If the equine is anxious or unsettled, or dangerous due to behavioral issues such as abuse, or because of extreme physical pain, “beam” the Reiki energy to the equine (thanking the Reiki for directing itself to the animal). When the equine begins to relax and you’re feeling safe, consider placing hands-on. If not, continue to “beam” the energy. Speak calmly and quietly with the equine.

After scanning, place your hands on the equine’s shoulder. This is a neutral and non-threatening area for the equine and enables you to connect and start the flow of Reiki energy. You can work with your hands touching the equine’s body or directly above it.

Place your hands on areas that presented themselves during the scanning. If you didn’t feel anything in a particular area, that’s OK. Begin with the head, making your way down the equine’s body to the tail. You may also use the hand positions that cover the equine’s entire body shown on the following page.

Maintain continuous contact with the body as you move to different areas. If the equine has a physical concern in a particular area, such as a sore tendon or joint, or lameness, focus the energy on that point. Follow your instincts and listen to where the equine asks you to touch. You will find over time and with practice that your hands will intuitively go where they need to go.

As an equine receives, feels and accepts the Reiki energy, they will present signs such as:

 Lowering of head  Soft eyes  Licking and chewing  Dropping the bottom lip  Moving the jaw  Blowing out gently through nostrils  Gut sounds  Breathing deeply  Resting a hind foot

After the treatment. To close the session, make a sweeping motion down the length of the body, three times, beginning at the head, to seal in the energy. Allow the equine to remain quiet (for the rest of the day if possible) and make sure water is available.

Give thanks ~ to the equine for the opportunity to give Reiki and to help them heal for their highest good, to the Reiki energy and any guides you may have called in, to yourself, for your ability and willingness to give Reiki.

The Reiki Session with Other Animals

Before a treatment. Each time you’re introduced to the animal that you’re going to treat, slowly and gently offer your hand and allow the animal to approach you ~ to smell you, feel you out. When introduced, I never try to pat an animal on the head or put my hand over them. This is considered a dominant position. The animal may not understand your intention and may get anxious or aggressive.

For smaller animals, get down on the floor, at the animal’s level, to help the animal to feel more comfortable, less threatened. Invite the animal’s person to sit with you. Sit near the animal’s favorite spot. Speak softly and friendly to the animal.

Show respect to the animal and to the Reiki process ~ Always mentally or verbally ask permission of the animal that you treat to give Reiki (even though in many cases the animal’s human will ask you to treat their animal). Ask the animal to show you where healing is needed.

Connect with the Reiki energy and the animal. Here’s some ideas on how to obtain the connection:

Get quiet and detach yourself from distractions. Take deep breaths; close your eyes; place hands on heart.

As the animal is getting used to your being in his/her space, beam the Reiki toward the direction of the animal or into the area that you’re sitting. Talk with the animal’s person. Learn more about the animal. Answer any questions. Remember to keep your awareness on the animal and its presence.

When the animal comes into your space, remain quiet and calm, and give the animal a chance to smell you, to get used to being near you before you do any hands-on. Once you feel that the animal is OK with your presence, give a pat, scratch behind the ears, or play with a toy. As you begin to feel a connection, begin to stroke the animal, moving in a slow and respectful manner.

Circle of Peace April 2013

Reiki First Degree Manual 26

The Reiki Session with Other Animals, cont’d.

During a treatment. Lay your hands where the animal likes to be touched. If the animal moves away from your hands in a particular position, move on to another part of the body. Some animals may be unsettled when introduced to the hands-on method for the first time. And that’s OK. They may move around, go in and out of the room, or be a distance away from you for a few minutes. If this happens, “beam” the Reiki until the animal quiets down and allows you to place your hands on the body. To help the animal to feel safer, continue to speak quietly and softly while giving the Reiki treatment. Slowly stroking or massaging the animal while you’re giving the treatment often helps to reduce the animal’s anxiety. Try to cover all the major organs and joint areas of the body. If there is a particular concern or problem that the animal’s human has told me about, I spend more time on that area.

I have found that many animals are more sensitive around the face. You may wish to treat this area after a few minutes when the animal is more familiar with the Reiki energy and in a more relaxed state of mind and body.

Allow the animal and the Reiki to guide you as to where the animal wants or needs the Reiki.

It has been my experience that some animals will position themselves right into my hands to make sure I get the right spot.

Remember, listen to the animal. They will tell you when the session is over.

After a treatment. To close the session, make a sweeping motion down the length of the body, three times, beginning at the head, to seal in the energy. Allow the animal to remain quiet (for the rest of the day if possible) and make sure water is available. Give thanks ~ to the animal for the opportunity to give Reiki and to help them heal for their highest good, to the Reiki energy and any guides you may have called in, to yourself, for your ability and willingness to give Reiki.

Treating Yourself with Reiki

Being able to give Reiki to yourself is a gift to you from the universe. It will help you to feel and experience the energy. And you can choose when and where you give it to yourself.

Reiki is a spiritual practice. It can empower you to become more aware of any issues that need attention on all levels in your body. It can give you new vitality and inner strength to learn and practice new behaviors and thoughts when dealing with everyday life.

Follow the hand positions on the following pages and make the time to do it each day, no matter how much time you have. A few minutes is better than none at all. If you have more time, enjoy 3-5 minutes with each hand position; if you have less time, skip some of the positions or do each position for 30 seconds. I find it relaxing and comforting to begin and/or end my day with Reiki while lying in bed.

Before you begin. Connect with the Reiki energy. Your connection is always there, but may be drowned out by the noise around you and in your head.

Here’s some ideas on how to obtain the connection ~

Get quiet and detach yourself from distractions State an intention or prayer, such as:  It is my intention that I receive the highest good from this session.

During your treatment. Get out of your own way. Allow the energy to flow; leave behind all of your own judgments, needs, perceptions and issues and focus on the energy itself. Keep your hands in a relaxed position and be gentle with your touch.

As with any new skill, the more you practice, the more comfortable you will become.

And with Reiki, the more you do, the more energy will flow and the more intuitive you shall become. More peace of mind will come to you in your circle of life and our planet.

After your treatment. Give thanks ~ for the Reiki energy and your ability to give Reiki, to any guides that were with you during the session, and to yourself for taking the time to take care of you.

Treating Others with Reiki

Being able to give Reiki is a gift for the recipients and you from the universe. When you give Reiki to others, you too are receiving and will benefit from the Reiki energy.

Follow the hand positions on the following pages. A full treatment takes about 1 – 1 ½ hours, depending on what positions you use, and how much time you spend on each position.

Before a treatment. Connect with the Reiki energy. Your connection is always there, but may be drowned out by the noise around you and in your head.

Here’s some ideas on how to obtain the connection:

Get quiet and detach yourself from distractions; state an intention or prayer, such as:

 It is my intention that (name of recipient) receives the highest good from this session.  I pray that I may be a clear and open channel for the Reiki energy.  Thank you (angels, spirit guides, God, universe) for your presence today at this Reiki healing session for (name of recipient).  I pray that I give and receive Reiki with love, acceptance, and compassion.  I pray that (name of recipient) and I are surrounded and protected by the light and love of Reiki and its guides.

Meditate. It brings peace and inspiration. It creates the space so that you can become conscious of your spiritual connection.

During a treatment. Get out of your own way. Allow the energy to flow; leave behind all of your own judgments, needs, perceptions and issues and focus on the energy itself. If you need to make someone better, you’ll be less likely to help them. This is because your focus is on you and your need to help, instead of focusing on being a Reiki channel. Keep your hands in a relaxed position and be gentle with your touch.

After a treatment. To close the session, make a sweeping motion down the length of the body, three times, beginning at the head, to seal in the energy. Give thanks ~ for the Reiki energy, for your gift ~ the ability to give Reiki, to any guides that were with you during the session, and to the recipient of the Reiki energy.

Chakras and Reiki

As you continue with your Reiki practice, it can be helpful to have a basic understanding of the chakra system and its function.

WHAT IS A CHAKRA?

Human and animal bodies have many chakras. Their purpose is to regulate the flow of energy through the energy system and transform information between the different levels of the body ~ physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional. The functioning of these chakras is a reflection of what we are thinking, feeling, how we are reacting and responding to everyday life.

The animal and human body is made up of two systems:

The physical system: The Anatomy What you can touch. Parts, organs, glands and their function.

The subtle system: Chakras What you can feel. The spirit, the soul. Overlays the physical body.

These two energetic systems complement each other and work together to support a healthy functioning body.

Chakra is an Indian Sanskrit word that means circle of energy. Each chakra is connected and sends energy to a certain part, organ and system of the body. The health of each chakra is constantly changing and is affected by the happenings of each day. Each chakra is a reflection of the physical state of the body ~ dis-ease, pain; and the emotional and mental state of the body ~ thoughts, feelings, and reactions and responses to everyday life. The ability to deal with a situation depends upon the initial condition of each chakra.

Animals, as well as humans, have seven major chakras that are located throughout the body. Animals have one more major chakra called the Brachial chakra. Animals also have six bud chakras, four on the paw pads and one at each bud of skin at the opening of the ears. The first chakra starts at the base of the spine and moves upward toward the heavens with the last chakra at the crown of the head.

WHAT IS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CHAKRAS AND REIKI?

All humans and animals have a physical system (the anatomy) and a subtle system (the aura). Chakras are connected to each of these systems, and the different hand positions given in a Reiki session treat both of these systems.

There is a clear connection between the condition of a chakra and the condition of the corresponding organ or gland. A chakra can be overactive, underactive, or in balance. If a chakra is blocked or closed, the energy is unable to move through it properly and the energy doesn’t get to the organ or body part it governs. This can lead to pain, illness, emotional and behavioral problems. The Reiki energy opens blocked chakras, allowing the energy to flow and to create balance to the body on all levels and the related organs and glands.

WHERE ARE THE CHAKRAS ON AN ANIMAL’S BODY?

The following pages provide you with ~ Information about the anatomy and chakra locations on the equine, feline and canine. A chakra chart with the location, function/purpose, body areas, and signs of imbalance.

The location of the chakras is universal for all animals. Chakra positions are approximate, as animal sizes and shapes vary.

The association of a chakra with a particular organ, system, or gland is a guide, not a hard-and-fast rule. Use your intuition, your gut, to determine which chakra is affected if you’re working on a particular problem.

DO I HAVE TO TREAT THE CHAKRAS DURING A REIKI SESSION?

It’s your choice; do what feels comfortable to you. You may use a more a systemic approach by treating the body’s chakras using their respective hand positions; Some practitioners find it helpful to follow the chart when first working with Reiki. OR You can go with your gut; go with what you sense or feel is in pain or imbalanced.

Either way, the animal receives the Reiki energy and its benefits.

With animals, begin with the Brachial chakra. This is a non-threatening area and can encourage the animal to calm down, learn to trust you, and make a connection. It’s not necessary to send Reiki to each and every chakra center on the animal’s body. Some animals may be sensitive to a certain area and not let you near it. And that’s OK.
