These polar diving cruises are still true expedition style. The years of experience have taught us that there iso n such thing as a guarantee about weather, wildlife or ice conditions. There is no such thing as a ‘better dive site’, or ‘better period of time’. Every voyage is different than the previous one. And every year the ice and weather conditions are unpredictable.

In June 1997, a group of 24 scuba divers from the , Belgium, , Switzerland and the United States joineds u for a special expedition: Ice Diving in the Arctic waters of Spitsbergen. This successful exploration voyage was followedy b an additional Arctic voyage in June 1998 and a new challenge in November of the same year: the very first commercial Antarctic diving expedition to the Falklands and the Antarctic. Our thorough knowledge of the Polar areas enableds u to develop voyages which combine nature cruises with diving expeditions. The procedure of the dive operation, the descriptions of the dive sites and the decisions about the period of time and itinerary is based upon many years of dive experience by Oceanwide Expeditions and professionals who have worked in the polar areas for research and filming.

What will you see while diving? The dive sites will vary from shallow ice diving, diving along a wall, from a beach or from the zodiac. The maximum depth is around 20 meters / 60 feet.T he combination of sunlight and the often-extraordinary formations of ice cause an overwhelming, ever-changing spectre of colours, with a fantastic variety of shades and brilliance. While snorkelling or diving along the ice floes,u yo will be amazed and never forget these deep blue colours. In the Antarctic and Arctic waters we may observe typical marine life such as sea squirts, squat lobsters, many species of starfish, spider crabs, soft corals, anemones, peacock worms, and dogfish. Diving in the Polar areas does not only offer ice, but also an interesting marine life, such as kelp walls, sea-snails, crabs, sea butterflies, various Arctic fish, shrubby horse-tails, jelly-fishes, sea-hedgehogs and starfishes. In Spitsbergen we may dive with seals. Near the Island Moffen (Spitsbergen) we may observe many walruses approaching the zodiacs. When they are within close proximity of the zodiacs, we may even try to observe these animals from under the surface with your snorkel and mask. Because of the possible danger we will not dive with the walruses.

Marine Life In the Atlantic waters we will offer the regular zodiac diving as well as wreck diving. The dives in the Polar areas vary from shallow ice diving, whereby we dive near or under the ice-floes (approx. 30 feet) to shore diving, whereby we dive to approximately 30 to 60 feet. The combination of sunlight, sea water and the often extraordinary formations of ice causesn a overwhelming, ever-changing spectre of colours, with a fantastic variety of shades and brilliance. While snorkelling or diving along the ice-floes, you will be amazed and never forget these deep blue colours. In the Atlantic water we may observe typical marine life suchs a sea squirts, squat lobsters, and many species of star fish, spider crabs, soft corals, anemones, peacock worms, and dogfish. Diving in the Arctic does not only offer ice, but also an interesting marine life, suchs a kelp walls, sea-snails, crabs, sea butterflies, various Arctic fish, shrubby horse-tails, jelly-fishes, sea-hedgehogs and starfishes. In Spitsbergen we may dive with sea lions.

e Antarctic Diving

Antarctica and the Sub-Antarctic Islands are some of the last truly unspoilt regions of the world. The mysterious White Continent, with its multi-coloured ice caps, glistening glaciers and towering snow-capped mountains, offers unparalleled scenery and photographic opportunities. Enormous numbers of penguins, whales, seals and seabirds congregate in the food-rich waters along the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic shores.

Marine Life During our Antarctic dive expedition you may observe penguins from under the surface as well as sea lions and perhaps even leopard seals. The Falkland Islands are rich with krill (which is consumed by many species) and therefore interesting for finding marine wildlife. The dive sites will vary from shallow ice diving, diving along a wall, from a beach or from the zodiac. The maximum depth is around 20 meters / 60 feet. The voyages in Spitsbergen are organised in the northern summertime, so it is not really cold. During this period, the sun shines 24 hours a day. Temperatures vary between 5 and 15 Celsius (June to September).

In the austral summer around the coasts of Antarctica, temperatures are generally close to freezing in the summer (December-February) months, or even slightly positive in the northern part of the . The temperatures in Antarctica vary between about -5 and 8 °C. Together with a strong wind these low temperatures feel like real sub-zero temperatures. This is caused by the wind-chill factor. Warm and efficient clothing (and a flexible attitude) are the best means to overcome these sometimes harsh circumstances. Exploring remote and wild regions like Antarctica requires a sensible and flexible approach. Although there can be bright skies with sunshine the weather is unpredictable. Catabatic winds, caused by the icecaps and glaciers, can pick up suddenly and are a fierce opponent for polar travellers. This might lead to the cancellation of planned hikes as hiking excursions can and will only take place in safe weather conditions.

Programme adaptations due to ice and weather These diving voyages are true expeditions. Although we know the destinations in detail, each dive will be a surprising event. Please note, that ice is not static but always in movement. This means, that the actual situation (colours, marine wildlife) under the surface, always depends on the conditions and formations of the ice. Not achieved personal expectations in reference to the diving cannot be grounds for claims, reimbursements or whatsoever.

Please note that the itinerary in the Arctic, Antarctica, Falklands (Malvinas) and Georgia is always weather and ice permitting. It is always possible that because of the pack ice and drift ice, we have to change our sailing schedule. Its i possible that certain bays or fjords are closed because of ice. In such a case, we have to re-route our voyage. Possible alterations that relate to weather and ice conditions can never be a reason for claims and reimbursements. When changing the itinerary, we can assure you that the captain, expedition leader and dive master will do their utmosto t provide an alternative program, along the same lines as the originally planned cruise itinerary searching for best dive sites in the Arctic, Antarctica, Falkland Islands (Malvinas) and

e Experience & Qualification

These voyages are not for beginners, you’ll have to be a very experienced diver and must be familiar with cold water diving and dry suit diving (at least 20 dives). Before departure you will have to show an internationally accepted diving certificate and diver’s logbook. The first dive of the trip will be a ‘check’ dive to try out your gear and weights and for our dive master to see if all individual divers have enough experience to dive in the Antarctic waters.

If our dive master feels that the diver does not meet the necessary experience, he can decide to exclude the diver from the dive program (this decision will be made for your own safety). In this case, Oceanwide Expeditions cannot be held (financially) responsible and does not grant any claims.l Al divers are required to follow the instructions of the dive master and guides at all times. All participants are diving 100% at their own risk, which is also the case while on land during the excursions.

Expedition Staff Our expedition team consists of one expedition leader, guides / lecturers and dive guides. All members of the team are experienced and worked with us for many years. Every morning after breakfast the passengers will be informed about the day’s program (position of the vessel, general information regarding the area, itinerary and the expected wildlife during the excursions). The excursions will be evaluatedn i the afternoon and after dinner. Occasionally, the expedition team will organise lectures, sometimes supported with slide shows to inform the passengers about various interesting features of the Arctic and the Antarctic.

Dive master Our dive masters are highly experienced polar dive masters and instructors, being assisted by one or two dive guides. The main language of the dive operation will be in English unless otherwise stated. e Diving operation & procedures Check dive: The voyage will start with a check-dive so all divers can get used to the cold water and try out their equipment and the number of weights they need. Before each dive, there will be a briefing about the location of the site, the weather and ice conditions and the procedure of the dive.

Dive Buddy: The dives will be done on a ‘buddy system’ basis. The dive guide will not be in the water to accompany and lead the divers. The guides will stay on the surface for the divers’ safety. The divers are expected to be experienced enougho t read their compass, depth gauges and look after each other in order to have a safe dive. Buddy team setup is always a critical issue: we do let our divers match themselves as much as possible and feasible. In cases where divers have not paired up themselves or where we are in doubt, dive guides sit down with divers and discuss their expectations and f level o experience. We try to pair people so that similar interest, experience and dive duration matches. If there is an uneven number of diving customers at some dives and no three-person group is feasible, the guides will come along.

Number of dives: eW plan at least one to two dives per day, but an exact number of dives cannot be given. It all depends on ice and weather conditions.

Dive guide / diver: 8 divers per dive guide. Maximum number of diving passengers: 24.

Approacho t dive site: The number of divers per zodiac (6 – 7 divers) is normal practice. Always watch your valuable gear when embarking and disembarking the zodiacs. Oceanwide Expeditions cannot be made liable for the loss of individual equipment.

Equipment: sThere i no need to store dive gear in the cabin. Upon arrival our dive staff will show you where you can leave your dive equipment in allocated storage holds on the deck. Only take your regulator with you in your cabin. Every diver is expected to prepare his own equipment well in advance prior to each dive. Bring yourn ow spare parts for your regulators and dry suit in case of leakage or damage. The divers are expected to setp u and carry their own equipment in and out of the zodiac and sometimes up and down the gangway.

Currents: could be present anywhere at any time, we simply haven’t dived these sites often enough to know exactly where it might occur. We always make sure one of our experienced dive guides drops in first and has a quick “look see” before putting others in the water.

Visibility: fA lot o pack ice often means clear visibility underneath and flat water. Little pack ice often means a lot of plankton blooms because there is more daylight and more swells. The ice and weather conditions are different of course every year, so there is no way you can predict anything.

Drifting pack ice: si a real hazard. If it comes in while divers are underwater then it can be very hard to see people if they surface in the middle of it. Therefore it is very important to only dive around icebergs that are either hard agroundr o floating in water well clear of brash or pack ice. Many of the sites have slopes or faces that go much deeper than the 20 meters maximum limit for the divers. Divers must act responsibly and show self-discipline. e Safety first!

Divingn i these remote Polar areas is no more dangerous than normal scuba diving as long as one important rule is adhered to: Safety First! All divers looking for dangerous stunts or wanting to make deep dives are kindly asked to t stay a home! There is no decompression chamber in Antarctica or Spitsbergen. Medical care in these Polar Regionss i almost non-existent and there is hardly any infrastructure. Although we have a doctor on board the vessel for first aid assistance, we cannot accept risky ventures from any of our divers. e Polar diving equipment Important personal clothing and gear you must bring with you: • Dry suit with hood • Thick and warm underwater garment (2 sets), dry gloves or adequate thick wet gloves (make sure they will keep your hands warm in sub-zero waters) • 2 separate freeze protected regulators, because we dive with special bottles with two separate outlets. The tankse w are using are 10L steel tanks. They are fitted with a “Y” or “H” valve configuration, with DIN or Yoke (INT) adaptable connections. • Pressure gage • Stabilizing jacket or some kind of BC with quick release – divers without BCD trusting only their dry suit for buoyancy control will not be allowed to dive. • Depth gage, watch or computer • Compass • Knife and a torch • Mask, fins and snorkel • Weight belt (weights available on board)

Useful tips for diving equipment Regulator Normal regulators will not function in sub-freezing water as both the first and second stage will freeze. You are requiredo t bring two sets of regulators (1st & 2nd stage), suitable for cold-water/ice diving. Some regulators can be fitted with an environmental seal kit; others come environmentally sealed from the manufacturer. To avoid regulator malfunction, regulators must be cared for properly before, during and after diving. Regulators shoulde b kept dry and warm before the dive; store them in your cabin. Avoid breathing from the regulator before submersion, except to briefly ensure it is functioning, but when doing so; exhale after removing the regulator from your mouth so as to avoid freezing the second stage with moisture from the exhaled breath. If during the dive your primary regulator freezes up and causes a free flow, you should switch to you back-up regulator, and turn off the valve to the primary regulator to stop the free flow.

Tips on keeping water out of your regulator: • Always open the cylinder valve briefly before mounting the regulator, to blow out any moisture from the orifice. • When purging the regulator for removal, hold the second stage lower than the first stage so that water cannot drip back to the first stage after pressure has dropped. • Remove the regulator carefully, so as not to allow ice or water to fall into the filter of the regulator. • Dry the dust cap thoroughly before attaching it to the regulator. • The dust cap must fit snugly before rinsing the regulator. • Do not press the purge button while rinsing the regulator. • Shake excess water from the second stage before hanging the regulator to dry. Face Mask The f type o mask you are using is not critical,e w recommend using a standard mask and regulator. You may use a full- face mask if you prefer, but keep an extra facemask handy in case your regulator free flows. It is best to avoid spitting into the mask for defogging, as this can freeze onto the inside of the mask. Commercial defogging agents work well for ice diving. Straps can also become brittle in cold weather, and it is highly recommended that you bring a spare strap and a spare mask.

Instruments, Gauges and Computers You must have one tank pressure indicator for each regulator set-up. Some electronic instruments will not function well in sub-freezing temperatures. Liquid crystal displays may be slow to display and batteries will also run low sooner.

Staying Warm Dry Suit The only adequate protection from thermal exposure in the Arctic and Antarctica where the water will be as cold as – 1ºC/30ºF is a dry suit. The type of dry suit you use is not important so long as it fits you, is waterproof and you are comfortable using it. Neoprene dry suits have the benefit of having good stretch and extra insulation. Shell suits provide no extra insulation but are lighter and dry more quickly. Shell suits serve only to keep the diver dry and require extra layers of garments to be worn under the suit. If appropriate, bring a small dry suit repair kit.

Insulating undergarments The function of the undergarments is to trap air against your body to be warmed. The colder the water, the more (or thicker) layers of undergarments are required. It is recommended that you wear two or three layers, depending on your suit. As the first layer you should wear a set of polypropylene liners. This type of material helps wick any moisture away from the body. As the second layer you should wear thick insulating material, such as fleece, synthetic pile, thinsulate or similar. As the final and outer layer you may wish to wear a windproof shell. The one piece jump suit styles i the most common and comfortable configuration of dive wear and is available in a variety of thickness depending on your dry suit and the water temperature.

Dry suit accessories If s a hood i not attached to your dry suit you will need to bring one. A 7 mm neoprene hood with face and neck seal is recommended. Regular 7 mm neoprene semidry gloves or mitts may be used with any dry suit and are relatively easy to use. Three finger mitts are warmer than five-finger gloves. Special dry gloves that deal against rings on the arm of the dry suit are available in the market. To prevent glove squeeze, and to promote warmth, short pieces of surgical tubing,r o straws can be inserted under the wrist seals to provide a conduit for air to exchange from the suit to the gloves. This type of glove requires additional practice to use, as they can come off your hand if not used correctly.

Post-dive wear Its i important to bring a warm hat and some warm wind and waterproof gloves to wear before, and especially after the dive. You may also wish to bring wind and waterproof spray jacket and pants to keep the cold wind off your wet dry suit.

The following items will be provided by Oceanwide Expeditions onboard: Compressor: On board we have a Bauer compressor (200 litres), 35 steel bottles of 12 litres each, 200 bar, with DIN and Yoke adaptable connections and two separate outlets. This will allow for the attachment of a primary and a secondary backup regulator, which allows for either regulator to be independently isolated if there is a malfunction or a free flow.

Weights: eYou will b provided with hard led weights and a belt. There are no ankle weights available. We do not have any rentals on board. Please make sure you check out all your dive gear before leaving. Bins are available for storage. Setting up your gear For redundancy in case of free flow caused by the cold water two sets of regulators are needed: One standard sport diving regulator including 1 first stage (freeze protected) and 2 second stages, 1 pressure gauge, 1 inflator hose and 1 dry suit hose. You also need an extra freeze protected first stage. The two regulators are assembled like this: You need two sets of regulators: 1st set includes: Freeze protected First stage Second stage (including hose) Hose for BC Pressure gage / computer

e Important final notes: • Divingsn i a equipment intensive activity. Ice diving requires an extensive amount of additional equipment becausef o the cold weather and water, and the remote location involved. Diving is not fun if you are cold. Diversn i cold water may have a higher air consumption rate, expend more energy, and can become more fatigued. Cold water also decreases a diver’s ability to perform complex tasks that require manual dexterity. • The snorkel is a vital part of the safety equipment and will often be used when snorkelling with seals and such • Don’t bring any new equipment on this expedition that you have not already tested in the water and are very familiar with. The Polar Regions are not the place to test out new equipment. • Please make sure that you have done at least 4 or 5 dives with your new equipment. It is required that you complete a few dives with all the equipment you will be using before coming on the trip. This will also allow you to fine-tune your buoyancy and trim characteristics, and make a note of how much weight you will need when diving with all your equipment • Please contact your airline about their luggage restrictions and request a special allowance for your dive equipment prior to departure. All excess baggage is at your own expense. • Each diver is expected to prepare his own equipment well in advance prior to each dive. Bring your own spare parts for your regulators and dry suit in case of leakage or damage. The diver will have to carry his own equipment in and out of the zodiac and sometimes up and down the gangway • Get travel insurance! Participation on an expedition cruise is at 100 % own risk. In our travel documentation, specifically our personal information form for scuba diving all passengers need to sign a liability statement, in which participants agree that Oceanwide Expeditions and dive staff are exempt from responsibility for personal injury and property damage including the loss of items. Oceanwide cannot accept any claims.

A combination of nature and diving! During the voyages, experienced dry suit divers have the opportunity to explore the wildlife from below the surface. Divingn i Antarctica and the Arctic is fascinating indeed. However, the topside is as exciting. During the trip, with the prior approval of your expedition leader, you can choose to participate at any time in our thrilling land excursions and zodiac cruises instead of diving. This combination characterizes the uniqueness of our voyages. It will certainly be the ultimate experience for you!

Our shore and near shore activity On board, there are zodiacs with strong out-board motors, ensuring comfortable zodiac cruises (approaching beautiful fjords and the pack-ice) and safe shore landings. We usually organize one morning excursion and one tour after lunch. The duration of the excursions may vary, but they normally take 3 to 4 hours. On land, it is very important to follow the guidelines of the tour leaders. It is not allowed to leave the group (in the Arctic we must take the Polar Bear danger very seriously, it can show up everywhere and attack without any warning!), touch, remove and, or take plants, stones, feathers etc. Disturbing the animals is naturally forbidden. Please be aware of the fact that some birds nest on the ground. Be careful where you walk, do not approach the nests. Be aware of the fact, that when such a bird’s nest is disturbed, it’s extremely vulnerable. Glaucous gulls, Skuas and Arctic foxes are quick to grab the opportunity to feast upon unprotected eggs or chicks. e Frequently Asked Questions How deep do we dive? The maximum depth we allow our divers to dive is 20 meter/ 60 feet. Many of the dive sites have slopes or faces that go much deeper than the 20 meter/60 feet max limit for the divers. Divers must act responsibly and show self discipline.

What is the average visibility? A lot of pack ice often means clear visibility underneath and flat water. Little pack ice often means a lot of plankton blooms because there is more daylight and more swells. The ice and weather conditions are different every year, making it very unpredictable. Hence, it is quite difficult to gage visibility.

What about currents and drift dives? Currents are specifically mentioned as a possible problem at some of the sites. Currents however could be present anywhere at any time, we simply haven’t dived these sites often enough. We will always check out the current before we go diving. We will not do drift dives. Drifting pack ice is a real hazard. If it comes in while divers are underwater then it can be very hard to see people if they surface in the middle of it. Icebergs should be either hard aground or floating in water well clear of brash or pack ice.

Do I need a full face mask? This is up to the individual diver and based on if you are used to dive with a full mask or not. Many divers chose to dive without a full mask. Vaseline is a great help in protecting your face against the cold and freezing waters.

What type of gloves is best? You can use a minimum of 7mm wetsuit gloves. Otherwise we would recommend dry-suit gloves.

Why do I need two regulators? We dive with two separate outlets (DIN and Yoke connection), so in case of a free flow (freezing) of one of your regulators you have the second regulator as a back up.

Can I have one regulator with DIN valves & the other with ISO? Yes, we have adapters on board which we can put in the valve to connect with an ISO regulator. The DIN connection will fit without the adapter.

Do I need to bring a waterproof bag to carry my smaller items? It is handy to bring a waterproof bag to use while you are preparing your dive equipment on deck. In the zodiac it is best not to bring too much except your necessary dive equipment.

What is the water temperature? Around freezing point, a little below.

Entdeckerschiff mit Format | Motorschiff MS Plancius MS Plancius ist ein kleines, modernes und nach höchsten Sicherheitsstandards ausgerüstetes Polarschiff und verfügt über eine hohe Eisklasse ( 1 D ) und ist tauglich für erlebnisreiche Eisfahrten in den entlegenen Gebieten der Antarktis und Arktis. Das Schiff wurde ursprünglich 1976 in den Niederlanden gebaut und war unter dem Namen "Ms. Tydeman” als ozeanografischen Forschungsschiff der königlichen holländischen Marine viele Jahre auf den Weltmeeren unterwegs. Das Schiff wurde 2004 von Oceanwide Expeditions erworben und auf den Namen „Plancius“ umgetauft. Das Schiff wurde komplett umgebaut und zu einem Passagierschiff umkonvertiert gemäß geltender Vorschriften des Loyd´s Register und SOLAS Standards. Der Name Plancius ist ein Tribut auf die ´Plancius Foundation´ (1981-1996), die als erster Kreuzfahrtanbieter Erlebnisreisen nach Spitzbergen an Bord eine kleinen Pioneerschiffes namens Plancius anbot. Das moderne Schiff MS Plancius ist seit der Antarktissaison 2009/10 in den polaren Regionen im Einsatz. Es haben insgesamt 116 Passagiere und 43 Crewmitglieder inkl. 7-8 Guide-Lektoren an Bord Platz. Es gemütlich eingerichtet, aber kein Luxus. Jede Reise wird von einem Bordarzt begleitet. Die Brücke ist für Passagiere offen, die Außendecks bieten viel Raum (Deck 4 kann ganz umwandert werden). Das Restaurant befindet sich auf Deck 3 und ermöglicht einen Sitzplatz für jeden Gast. Es dient auch als Vortragsraum mit moderner Präsentationstechnik. In der Panoramalounge auf Deck 5 gibt es eine Bar und einen grandiosen Ausblick.

Das Schiff ist seit 2011 für den neuen Eigner und Betreiber Oceanwide Expeditions in den polaren Regionen im Einsatz. Ortelius ist nach dem holländisch/flämischen Kartografen Abraham Ortelius (1527 – 1598) benannt, der den ersten modernen Weltatlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum im Jahr 1570 veröffentlichte. Zu dieser Zeit war der Weltatlas das teuerste Schriftwerk was je publiziert wurde. Entdeckerschiff mit Format | Dreimasttraditionssegler ‘Rembrandt van Rijn’ Geschichte: ‘Rembrandt Van Rijn’ wurde Anfang des letzten Jahrhunderts als Focksegler für den Fang von Heringen eingesetzt. Das Schiff wurde in den Niederlanden als Dreimastschoner für den Passagierbetrieb im Jahr 1994 umgerüstet und segelte in Spitzbergen (1994 – 1996) und den Galápagos (1998 - 2001). Im Jahr 2011 wurde das Schiff neu umgestaltet und restauriert. Das Schiff ist mit moderner Kommunikations- und Navigationstechnik ausgestattet und entspricht den hohen Sicherheitsanforderungen von SOLAS (safety of life at sea). Details zum Schiff: Die Rembrandt van Rijn ist 56 Meter lang (168 ft.), 7 Meter breit und hat einen Tiefgang von 2,5 Metern. Die Maximalgeschwindigkeit bei Antrieb mit Motoren liegt bei ca. 7 Knoten. Das Schiff verfügt über eine erfahrene Crew mit 9 Mitgliedern inklusive 2 Expeditionsguides. Das Schiff hat Platz für 33 Passagiere in 16 Kabinen (1 Dreierkabine mit Bullauge und DU/WC, 6 Twin Innenkabinen mit DU/WC (kein Bullauge), 9 Twinkabinen mit Bullauge und DU/WC, plus Kabinen für Crew und Staff. Es gibt viel Platz im Restaurant für alle Passagiere die dort Mahlzeiten gemeinsam einnehmen können. Es gibt eine separate Bar mit Lesetisch. Das Schiff ist bestens geeignet für Expeditionsfahrten um kleine Inseln und verfügt über ausreichend Platz für Passagiere am Außendeck, sogar wenn das Schiff unter Segel fährt. Zwei robuste Schlauchboote (Zodiacs) ermöglichen Landungen und Exkursionen in entfernten und unzugänglichen Gebieten, die von großen Schiffen nicht besucht werden können. Flagge: Vanuatu.

Entdeckerschiff mit Format | Zweimastschoner ´Noorderlicht´ Oceanwide Expeditions führt Expeditionen in Spitzbergen und zu den Lofoten mit dem Segelschiff “Noorderlicht” (zu Deutsch: Nordlicht) durch. Sie wurde 1910 in Flensburg als Dreimast-Schoner gebaut und fuhr zunächst hauptsächlich auf der Ostsee. 1991 erwarben die gegenwärtigen Besitzer das Schiff, erneuerten die Takelage und richteten das Interieur nach den Regeln von „Register Holland“ neu ein. Heute fährt das Schiff unter niederländischer Flagge und ist als Zweimast-Schoner getakelt und für den Einsatz auf allen Meeren geeignet. Die “Noorderlicht” beherbergt maximal 20 Passagiere und ist mit 10 Kabinen mit jeweils 1 Stockbett für zwei Personen, Schrank und Waschbecken mit fließend heißem Wasser ausgestattet. Es gibt vier Duschen und fünf Toiletten am Gang, einen großen Speiseraum ( Salon ) und eine komplette Küche unter Deck. Die moderne Kombüse schließt einen Mikrowellenherd und eine Geschirrspülmaschine mit ein. Vom Deckhaus kann man die Szenerie vom gemütlichen Sofa aus beobachten. Wegen der guten Isolation, der Zentralheizung und der Klimaanlage kann das Schiff sowohl in kalten als auch in warmen Gewässern eingesetzt werden. Zur Crew der “Noorderlicht” gehören drei professionelle, niederländische Seeleute und Segler, ein und ein erfahrener Expeditionsleiter. Passagiere dürfen beim Hantieren mit den Segeln und Nachtwachen auf der Brücke mithelfen und auch mal das Ruder übernehmen. Das Schiff ist Entdeckerschiff immer nah an der Natur. Tage 8 – 10 ( Tag 11 der Reise OTL03 ) - Wir segeln der Mitternachtssonne und dem ewigen Eis entgegen, Zeit um Ausschau zu halten nach Grönlandwalen, Delfinen, Robben, Eisbären und einer Vielzahl von Seevögeln. Wir gelangen bis zum 79. Nördlichen Breitengrad und steuern in westliche Richtung (Kontinentalschelf westlich von Spitzbergen). Dort hoffen wir auf Sichtung von Finnwalen. Am Eingangstor der großen Fjorde von Spitzbergen sehen wir evtl. Zwergwale.

Tag 11 ( Tag 12 der Reise OTL 03) - Wir suchen nach Walrossen bei Sarstangen, Engelskmansbukta oder Poole-Pynten. Am Abend können wir bei Alkhornet anlanden, eine weitere Seevögel Kolonie und vielleicht sehen wir Rentiere und Polarfüchse dort.

Tag 12 (02. Juni und 9. Juni) – Ausschiffung in Longyearbyen, dem administrativen Zentrum Spitzbergens. Flug nach Oslo und Weiterreise in die Heimat.

Tag 1 - Ankunft in Longyearbyen, dem Verwaltungszentrum Spitzbergens auf der größten Insel des Archipels, West-Spitzbergen. Vor dem Einschiffen besteht die Möglichkeit, durch die Siedlung zu streifen. Die Pfarrkirche und das Svalbard- Museum mit interessanten Ausstellungen zu Bergbauindustrie und Polargeschichte sind ebenfalls einen Besuch wert. Um Longyearbyen sind 100 verschiedene Pflanzenarten nachgewiesen worden. Am frühen Abend heißt es „Leinen los“ und fahren durch den Isfjorden, wo wir vielleicht schon den ersten Zwergwalen begegnen.

Tag 2 – Wir reisen in den Raudfjord zur Nordküste von Westspitzbergen. Dieser schöne Fjord wird von Gletschern dominiert und wird gerne von Bart- und Ringelrobben besucht. An den Klippen und Küstenlinien des Fjordes sind sehr viele Seevögelarten zuhause und es gibt viel Vegetation zu sehen in kleinen geschützten Nischen. In diesem Gebiet sieht man recht oft Eisbären.

Tag 3 - Soweit es das Wetter zulässt, wollen wir heute zum Eingang des Liefdefjorden fahren. Mit etwas Glück können wir den Fjord befahren und an dessen Ende an der 5 km langen Front des Monacogletschers entlang kreuzen. Dreizehenmöwen zu Tausenden fischen hier an der Abbruchkante, und Eisbären sieht man hier öfters in fotografisch einmaliger Umgebung.

Tag 4 - Heute fahren wir in die Hinlopenstrasse ein, dem Verbreitungsgebiet von Bart- und Ringelrobben, Eisbären und Elfenbeinmöwen. Die Treibeisfelder vor der Lomfjordshalvøya befahren wir auf einer Zodiactour. Ziel ist das Alkefjellet, ein Vogelfelsen, auf dem Tausende von Dickschnabellummen in spektakulärer Umgebung nisten. Auf der Osteseite der Hinlopenstrasse erwartet uns die Palanderbukta auf Nordaustlandet. Hier leben Rentiere, Kurzschnabelgänse, Elfenbeinmöwen und Walrosse.

Tag 5 – Heute steuern wir die nördlichste Inselgruppe Spitzbergens an: Seven Islands nördlich von Nordaustlandet gelegen. Wir hoffen auf eine Anlandung auf Phippsøya, dort vermuten wir Walrosse entlang der Küstenlinie. Wir setzen die Reise fort bis ins Packeis, wo wir die Stille und Schönheit der Natur genießen und auf Eisbären, Elfenbeinmöwen und Rosenmöwen Ausschau halten. Wir nähern uns dem 81 Breitengrad, von hier aus sind es nur ca. 540 km bis zum geografischen Nordpol.

Tag 6 - Wir folgen unserem Weg zurück nach Westen, wobei wir die meiste Zeit der Eisgrenze folgen auf stetiger Suche nach Eisbären und dem seltenen Grönlandwal. Ca. 40 nautische Meilen westlich von Spitzbergen segeln wir entlang des kontinentalen Eisschelfs, wo Finnwale nährstoffreiche Futterquellen in der auftreibenden Strömung finden. Westlich des Kongsfjordes hoffen wir auf die Sichtung von Buckelwalen.

Tag 7 – In Forlandsundet, bei Sarstangen, befindet sich ein Ruheplatz von Walrossen. Als Alternative zu diesem Programm könnten wir auch weiter in den St. Johns Fjord oder noch südlicher zum Eingang des Isfjordes fahren und der Vogelkolonie bei Alkhornet einen Besuch abstatten. Hier nisten Seevögel an den Klippen, und Polarfüchse suchen den Fuß der Felswände nach herabgestürzten Jungvögeln und Eiern ab. Spitzbergen-Rentiere grasen auf den relativ saftigen Weiden. In der Nacht erreichen wir Longyearbyen.

Tag 8 - Ausschiffung in Longyearbyen, dem administrativen Zentrum Spitzbergens. Flug nach Oslo und weiter in die Heimat.

Tag 2 - Auf der Fahrt nach Norden, entlang der Westküste Spitzbergens, kommen wir morgens im Krossfjorden an. Von hier aus brechen wir zu einer Zodiac-Rundfahrt entlang des spektakulären 14.-Juli-Gletschers auf. An den erstaunlich fruchtbaren Hängen nahe dem Gletscher blüht eine Vielzahl an Pflanzen. Hoch an den Felsen nisten Dreizehenmöwen und Dickschnabellummen in großer Zahl. Es bestehen gute Chancen, den opportunistisch lebenden Polarfuchs zu sehen; er streicht oft am Fuß der Vogelkolonien entlang in der Hoffnung, einen hilflosen Jungvogel zu erwischen, der aus seinem Nest gefallen ist. Im landschaftlich schönen Fjord halten sich gewöhnlich einige Bartrobben auf. Am Nachmittag führt uns die Reise nach Ny Ålesund, die nördlichste, permanent bewohnte Ortschaft der Erde. In der einstigen Bergbausiedlung fuhr früher die nördlichste Eisenbahn der Erde – die Lokomotive und einige Wage dieser Kohlebahn kann man noch immer dort bewundern.

Ny Ålesund hat sich inzwischen in eine moderne Forschungsstation verwandelt. In unmittelbarer Nähe der Häuser finden sich Brutplätze von Weißwangen- und Kurzschnabelgänsen sowie von Küstenseeschwalben. Geschichtlich interessierte Besucher werden sicher auch gerne zum alten Ankermast spazieren wollen, an dem Amundsen und Nobile (mit der Norge, 1926) und Nobile (mit der Italia, 1928) ihre Luftschiffe auf dem Weg zum Nordpol festmachten.

Tag 3 - Auf der vorgelagerten Insel Ytre Norskøya besuchen wir eine holländische Walfangstation, deren großer Friedhof an diese beschwerliche und gefahrenvolle Zeitepoche erinnert. Eine Vielzahl von Vogelkolonien sind hier beheimatet: Krabbentaucher, Lang- und Dickschnabellummen, Papageientaucher und große Raubmöwen. Weiter im Osten besuchen die Gegend um den Raudfjord im Norden von Westspitzbergen. Dieser eindrucksvolle Fjord ist für die spektakulären Gletscherfronten bekannt. Hier fühlen sich Ringelrobben und Bartrobben sehr wohl. Die steilen Klippen entlang der Küstenlinie bieten genug Nistplätze für verschiedene Vogelarten an. Die Vegetation ist vielfältig und gedeiht an geschützten Stellen.

Tag 4 - Wir verbringen den ganzen Tag im Raudfjord System. Hier, im geschützten Fjord gibt es sehr guten Bedingungen für Kajakfahrer, an Land finden Wanderer (mit oder ohne Schneeschuhe) die besten Voraussetzungen für kurze oder längere Touren (leichte, mittelschwere oder anspruchsvollere Wanderungen möglich).

Siedlung befinden, die vor ca. 200 Jahren verlassen wurde. Die kreisförmige Anordnung der Steine zeigen wo die Sommerhäuser standen. Die Winterhäuser stehen näher am kleinen Kap. Dieser historische Ort zeigt auch wo das von Eisbären sicher verwahrte Fleisch gelagert wurde. Hier gibt es auch Grabstätten. Am Abend geht die Reise weiter durch schöne Fjorde gen Westen, hier ist staut sich das Eis regelrecht auf.

Tag 9 - Heute gehen wir auf der Kap Hofmann Halvø an Land. In dieser Gegend weiden oft Moschusochsen. Auch das Alpenschneehuhn und den Eistaucher können wir hier finden. Die Landschaft ist ausgesprochen schön, besonders, wenn sich das Laub von Zwergweide und Zwergbirke im Herbst verfärbt. Auch die arktischen Beeren wie Heide-, oder Krähenbeere tragen mit satten Farben zu einem pittoresken Bild bei. Sie sind zudem ausgesprochen schmackhaft! Abends geht unsere Fahrt weiter durch den Fjord, Richtung Scoresby Land. Die mit ihren warmen Herbstfarben, die blauen Eisberge und die hohen dunklen Berge im Hintergrund bilden einen perfekten Kontrast.

Tag 10 - Im Nordwestfjord in Scoresby Land treffen wir am Morgen auf gigantische Eisberge. Einige sind mit Sicherheit über 100 m hoch und mehr als einen Kilometer lang. Da der Fjord selbst nur etwa 400 m tief ist, sind die meisten dieser Eisgiganten hier auf Grund gelaufen. Wir gehen in der Nähe vom Sydkap an Land, um die Überreste eines Winterdorfs der Thulekultur zu besichtigen. Bis zu zwanzig Menschen fanden in diesen winzigen Behausungen Unterschlupf. Sie lebten vom Fang des Grönlandwals und benutzten die Walknochen als Dachbalken. Vielleicht landen wir auch bei Gurreholm auf Jameson Land. Hier ist die weite Landschaft leicht hügelig.

Tag 11 - Wir erreichen Ittoqqortoormiit, mit 500 Einwohnern die einzige größere Siedlung am Scoresby-Sund. Im Postamt kann man Briefmarken für Postkarten kaufen, oder schlendern Sie durch den Ort und achten Sie auf die Felle von Robben, Moschusochsen und Eisbären, die zum Trocknen aufgespannt sind. Nach dem Abendessen nehmen wir einen südlichen Kurs auf und passieren die atemberaubende Landschaft der Blosseville Küste.

Tag 12 - Auf der Fahrt nach Island durchqueren wir die Dänemarkstraße und hoffen, hier Wale und Seevögel beobachten zu können. In der Nacht präsentiert sich vielleicht auch eine Aurora Borealis ( Nordlichter ) .

Tag 13 – Am Morgen Ankunft in Akureyri, hier endet die Expeditionsschiffsreise. Sammeltransfer mit Bus zum Hotel Reykjavik Centrum, Adalstraeti 16 in Reykjavik (ca. 6 Stunden Fahrt).

Tag 1 - Morgens Transfer mit dem Bus von Hotel Reykjavik Centrum, Adalstraeti 16 in Reykjavik, zum Schiff nach Akureyri, wo wir nach ca. 6 Std. Fahrt durch den Norden Islands am Nachmittag ankommen. Am frühen Abend beginnt unsere Schiffsreise nordwärts in Richtung Dänemarkstrasse.

Tag 2 - Auf See mit Nordkurs durch die Dänemarkstrasse. Gewiss sehen wir Eissturmvögel, Dreizehenmöwen, Baßtölpel und große Gruppen von Trottellummen und Tordalken. Wir überqueren den nördlichen Polarkreis und halten nach Walen Ausschau. Abends, auf das Kap Brewster zu fahrend, könnten wir bereits die ersten Eisberge erspähen, welche vor der grönländischen Ostküste im Meer driften.

Tag 3 - Im Laufe des Morgens kreuzen wir vor der stark vergletscherten, wilden Volquart-Boons-Küste. Je nach der Situation vor Ort begeben wir uns spontan auf eine Schlauchboottour entlang einer der zahlreichen Gletscherzungen an dieser Küste, und vielleicht können wir irgendwo an Land gehen, etwa beim Maane- Gletscher oder in der Vikingebugt. Später landen wir auf Danmarks Ø. Hier interessieren uns besonders die Überreste einer Inuit-Siedlung, die vor etwa 200 Jahren verlassen worden ist. Kreise aus Steinen, die sogenannten „Zeltringe“, deuten die Lage der ehemaligen Sommerbehausungen an, während Fundamentreste von Winterhäusern in der Nähe eines kleinen Kaps zu sehen sind. Diese archäologischen Fundstellen befinden sich in überraschend gutem Zustand, so daß man auch heute noch die Eingänge und sogar “bärensichere Speisekammern”

Am Nachmittag besuchen wir Ittoqqortoormiit, die größte Siedlung in der Region am Scoresbysund mit etwa 400 Einwohnern. Auf dem Postamt können Sie Briefmarken für Ihre Postkarten kaufen. Schlendern Sie durchs Dorf: Vor den bunt gestrichenen Holzhäusern schlafen Schlittenhunde und hängen die Felle von Robben, Moschusochsen und Eisbären zum Trocknen.

Tag 7 - Den gesamten Tag auf See halten wir Ausschau nach großen Walen und Zugvögeln. In der Nacht bestaunen wir bei guten Verhältnissen die Aurora Borealis (Nordlichter).

Polarkreis & Antarktische Halbinsel Ushuaia – Ushuaia OTL29 D K P Mär 17 – Mär 28, 2017 11 Nächte an Bord Ortelius

Tag 1: Ushuaia - Am Nachmittag heißt es: “Herzlich Willkommen an Bord”. Unser Einstiegshafen liegt in der südlichsten Stadt der Erde: Ushuaia eingerahmt von der schneebedeckten Martial-Bergkette ist zum Beaglekanal hin ausgerichtet. Die erste Etappe unserer Reise führt dann auch durch diesen von Kapitän FitzRoy und Charles Darwin 1834 entdeckten, wild zerklüfteten Kanal nach Osten bis zum offenen Atlantik.

Tage 2 & 3: Auf See - Kap Hoorn und die Spitze der Antarktischen Halbinsel sind ca. 1050 Seemeilen durch die berüchtigte Drake Passage getrennt. Die vorgelagerte Spitze Südamerikas bringt wärmeres Wasser mit nach Süden, das auf polares Wasser in der Antarktis trifft. Dieser Treffpunkt der polaren und subpolaren Meeresströmungen wird Konvergenz genannt. Sie beeinflußt nicht nur die Ausdehnung und Richtung der Eisbergbewegungen – die allgemeine nordöstliche Richtung der Drift innerhalb der Drake Passage läßt es zu, daß Eisberge unterschiedlicher Größe innerhalb dieses Gebietes das ganze Jahr über auftreten – sondern sorgt auch für ein besonders reichhaltiges Nahrungsangebot im Südatlantik. So ist es nicht verwunderlich, daß Wander-, Graukopf-, Schwarzbrauen- und Rauchiger-Albatros, sowie verschiedene Sturmschwalben, wie etwa Buntfüssige-, Schwarzbauch-, Weissflügel- und Kapsturmvogel zu unseren ständigen Begleitern zählen. Auch Silber-, Blau- und Schneesturmvogel geben uns die Ehre. In der Nähe der Südshetlandinseln können wir die ersten Eisberge ausmachen. In vorteilhaften Bedingungen wird der Kapitän eventuell entscheiden, durch die enge Seepassage zwischen Robert Island und Greenwich Island zu fahren. Wenn es gelingt, dann stehen die Chancen gut, die erste Anlandung in Antarktischen Gewässern schon am Abend des dritten Tages auf Aitcho Island auf den Südshetland Inseln zu ermöglichen. Falls die Wetterbedingungen ein solches Manöver durch die English Strait nicht zulassen, dann wird der Kurs südlich von Livingston Island verlegt. Die Südshetland Inseln sind vom Wind gepeitscht und verhüllen sich oft in Nebel. Hier gibt es eine breite Vielfalt von Flora (Moose, Flechten und blühende Gräser zu sehen) und Fauna (Eselspinguine, Kehlstreifenpinguine, und Riesensturmvögel) zu bewundern.

Tage 4 – 9: Antarktis - Wir beginnen unsere Reise mit einer Anlandung auf den Südshetlandinseln (z.B. Hannah Point). Dort gibt es eine Vielzahl von Kehlstreifenpinguinen, Eselspinguinen und Riesensturmmöwen. See-Elefanten aalen sich am Strand. Auch der Insel Deception möchten wir einen Besuch abstatten. Die hufeisenförmige Vulkaninsel umschließt einen versunkenen Krater. Schon die Einfahrt in diesen Kraterring ist spektakulär. Unser Schiff tastet sich durch eine enge Einfahrt mit steilen Felswänden auf der Südostseite der Insel ins innere des Kraters vor. Neptune´s Bellow, wird dieser Schlund zu Recht genannt. Im Innern findet sich ein tiefes, natürliches Hafenbecken, welches Walfängern jahrzehntelang als Operationsbasis diente. Heute ist die verlassene und vom letzten Vulkanausbruch 1969 zum Teil verschüttete Walfangstation in Whaler´s Bay nur noch eine dunkle Erinnerung an diese Zeiten. Tausende von Kapsturmvögeln und Dominikanermöwen, sowie Antarktische Raubmöwen nisten in den Ruinen. Auf unserer Weiterreise nach Süden steuern wir Orne Island an, dort gibt es eine große Kolonie von Kehlstreifenpinguinen und einen schönen Blick über die Gerlache Strasse und bis nach Cuverville Island. Die kleine Felseninsel Cuverville Island liegt zwischen dem bergigen Antarktischen Kontinent und der eisbedeckten Insel Danco. Hier nisten Eselspinguine mit Blick auf Gletscher und gestrandete Eisberge. Küken groß. In und Paradise Bay mit ihren Myriaden von Eisbergen und langen tief eingeschnittenen Fjorden haben wir die Möglichkeit das Innere der Fjorde mit dem Zodiac zu erkunden und den Antarktischen Kontinent zu betreten. Wenn es die Eisverhältnisse erlauben, fahren wir durch die enge Lemaire Straße nach , wo wir Adeliepinguine und Blauaugenkormorane antreffen. Wir hoffen auf eine Anlandung auf Pleneau Island, wo es gute Möglichkeiten gibt, Seeelefanten anzutreffen. In diesem Gebiet begegnet man auch oft Buckelwalen, Zwerg- und Finnwalen. Weiter geht unsere Fahrt nach Süden, an den Argentine Islands entlang zum Crystal Sound, südlich des Polarkreises. Die Berge ragen hier dramatisch aus dem Meer und sind über und über von Eis bedeckt. Eventuell bleibt Zeit für eine Anlandung auf Fish Island, dort landen wir (bei guten Bedingungen) auf der südlichsten von Adelie Pinguinen und Blauaugenkormoranen bewohnten Insel der Antarktischen Halbinsel. Auf , im Crystal Sound südlich des Polarkreises werden wir wohl unseren südlichsten Punkt erreichen. Auf dem Rückweg nach Norden möchten wir dann noch durch den atemberaubenden Neumayer Kanal und die Gerlache Strasse fahren. Wir erreichen die schöne Inselgruppe Melchior Islands, wo wir die letzten Eisberge sehen und hoffentlich Seeleoparden, Krabbenfresserrobben und Walen begegnen.

Tage 10 - 11: Auf See - Auf unserer Reiseroute nach Norden über die Drake Passage begegnen wir einer Vielzahl von Seevögeln.

Tag 12: Ushuaia - Wir erreichen den Hafen von Ushuaia in den frühen Morgenstunden. Nach dem Frühstück heißt es dann Verabschiedung.

Ihre einmalige Chance, Teil einer echten Expeditionsreise zu sein! Die Kaiserpinguinkolonie (mit ca. 4.000 Brutpaare) liegt südlich von Snow Hill Island. Obwohl wir wahrscheinlich nicht in der Lage sind, so weit nach Süden durch das Eis vorzudringen (die Chance lag bei weniger als 50% auf unseren Reisen der letzten drei Saisonen), ist die Idee, vor allem, uns in oder zwischen dem Antarctic Sound und James Ross Island zu positionieren, dicht an den Rand des Eises zu rücken , um von dort aus die Kaiserpinguine auf dem Weg in das offene Wasser zu beobachten. Wir werden unsere Hubschrauber verwenden, um einzelne Kaiserpinguine aufzuspüren, und um Rundflüge mit Hubschrauberlandungen in sonst unzugänglichen Gebieten so früh in der Saison anzubieten.

Wenn die Eis-Bedingungen günstig sind und der Weg zu Snow Hill Island frei von mehrjährigen Packeises ist, werden wir unsere Reise den Gegebenheiten anpassen und bieten Ship-to-Shore-Helikoptertransfers auf Snow Hill Island an (wie bereits im Jahr 2013 erfolgreich durchgeführt). Die Kaiserpinguinkolonie ist dann nur noch ca. 45 Minuten zu Fuß von der Landestelle entfernt. Wenn wir Erfolg haben, wird dies eine faszinierende und eine „once in a lifetime“ Erfahrung sein. Wir haben versucht, Snow Hill Island während unserer Fahrten im Jahr 2012, 2013 und 2014 zu erreichen. im Jahr 2013 gelang es uns schließlich; daher liegen die Chancen Snow Hill Island zu erreichen in der Tat weniger als 50%.

Auch der Besuch der ukrainischen Antarktisstation Vernadsky ist eingeplant, um Ihnen einen Eindruck vom Leben moderner Antarktisforscher vermitteln zu können. Wir werden dort freundlich empfangen und werden zu einem Stationsrundgang eingeladen Auf unserer Fahrt nach Norden durch den Neumayer Kanal kommen wir zu den Melchior Inseln, wo wir vielleicht noch eine Fahrt mit dem Zodiac anbieten können, immer auf der Suche nach Seeleoparden, Krabbenfresserrobben und Walen. Danach wird es Zeit wieder Kurs nach Südamerika zu nehmen.

Tage 8 - 9 Auf See - Auf unserer Reiseroute nach Norden über die Drake Passage begegnen wir einer Vielzahl von Seevögeln.

für unser Basecamp Multiaktivprogramm finden werden. Die geschützten Gewässer rundum Wiencke Island werden die nächsten Tage unser “Spielplatz” für alle Aktivitäten. In diesem alpinen Umfeld gibt es hervorragende Möglichkeiten die Region zu Fuß, per Zodiac oder Kajaks zu erkunden. Wanderer erkunden mit Schneeschuhen das Gebiet um den Anlandungsstrand, Bergsteiger suchen ihre Herausforderung weiter im Inland und besteigen Gipfel und lohnende Aussichtspunkte, z.B. Jabet Peak (540 m). Alle Wanderungen, Bergtouren und Exkursionen können nur bei angemessenen Wetterverhältnissen durchgeführt werden. In dieser Region sind zwei Nächte vor Anker geplant, um zwei Zeltnächte an Land und zwei volle Aktivtage umsetzen zu können. Wir besuchen die Britische Forschungsstation (zugleich das südlichste Postamt der Welt) auf Goudier Island und statten der kleinen Nachbarninsel Jougla Point ebenfalls einen Besuch ab. Dort gibt es reichlich Eselspinguine und Kormorane zu sehen. Und immer wieder sind wir auf der Suche nach Seeleoparden, Krabbenfresserrobben und Walen.

Bei guten Bedingungen und Zeitverfügbarkeit führt die Reise weiter gen Süden durch den schönen und bekannten Lemaire Kanal bis nach Pleneau und zur Petermann Insel. Auf dem Weg dorthin gibt es je nach Wetter-, und Eissituation die Möglichkeit ein weiteres Aktivprogramm an Land und in Küstennähe zu ermöglichen. Die erfahrenen Expeditionsguides an Bord halten Ausschau nach den besten Anlandungsmöglichkeiten. Vielleicht begegnen wir auch Buckelwalen, Zwergwalen oder sogar Finnwalen. Es wird ein neuer Standort für die Zeltnacht ausgewählt, nicht zu weit entlegen vom geplanten Aktivprogramm des nächsten Tages. Von hier aus orientiert sich die Reise wieder nach Norden und wir steuern die eisberggefüllte Paradiesbucht und die umliegenden Fjorde an. Im Fjordsystem gibt es Myriaden von Eisbergen. Wir haben die Möglichkeit zur Erkundung mit dem Zodiac. Wanderer, Bergsteiger und Fotografen kommen beim Anlandungsprogramm auf Ihre Kosten. In diesem Gebiet gibt es sehr gute Chancen Buckelwale und Zwergwale zu sehen. Bei Neko Harbour betreten wir den antarktischen Kontinent und die sagenhafte Gletscherwelt aus steil emporragenden Eiswänden und Gletscherfronten bestaunen. Wir werden natürlich wieder aktiv, es kündigen sich Exkursionen mit dem Zodiac , Wanderungen, eine Bergtour und eine Kajakexkursion an. Eine kleine Gruppe von Bergsteigern steigt hinauf bis zu einem Aussichtspunkt. Wir verbringen die Nacht entweder bei Neko Harbour oder Paradise Bay. Eine letzte Zeltnacht wird allen ermöglicht, die bisher noch nicht zum Zuge kamen. Wir werden am folgenden Tag sehr früh unser Basecamp an Land abbauen und fahren an den Melchior Inseln vorbei bis zum offene Meer, dem Eingang der Drake Passage. Auf der direktesten Strecke überqueren wir die Seestraße bis zu unserem Zielhafen nach Ushuaia.

Tage 10 - 11: Auf See - Auf unserer Reiseroute nach Norden über die Drake Passage begegnen wir einer Vielzahl von Seevögeln.

Tag 12: Ushuaia - Wir erreichen den Hafen von Ushuaia in den frühen Morgenstunden. Nach dem Frühstück heißt es dann Verabschiedung.

Tag 1: Ushuaia - Am Nachmittag heißt es: “Herzlich Willkommen an Bord”. Unser Einstiegshafen liegt in der südlichsten Stadt der Erde: Ushuaia eingerahmt von der schneebedeckten Martial-Bergkette ist zum Beaglekanal hin ausgerichtet. Die erste Etappe unserer Reise führt dann auch durch diesen von Kapitän FitzRoy und Charles Darwin 1834 entdeckten, wild zerklüfteten Kanal nach Osten bis zum offenen Atlantik.

Tage 2 & 3 : Auf See - Kap Hoorn und die Spitze der Antarktischen Halbinsel sind ca. 1050 Seemeilen durch die berüchtigte Drake Passage getrennt. Die vorgelagerte Spitze Südamerikas bringt wärmeres Wasser mit nach Süden, das auf polares Wasser in der Antarktis trifft. Dieser Treffpunkt der polaren und subpolaren Meeresströmungen wird Konvergenz genannt. Sie beeinflußt nicht nur die Ausdehnung und Richtung der Eisbergbewegungen – die allgemeine nordöstliche Richtung der Drift innerhalb der Drake Passage läßt es zu, daß Eisberge unterschiedlicher Größe innerhalb dieses Gebietes das ganze Jahr über auftreten – sondern sorgt auch für ein besonders reichhaltiges Nahrungsangebot im Südatlantik. So ist es nicht verwunderlich, daß Wander-, Graukopf-, Schwarzbrauen- und Rauchiger-Albatros, sowie verschiedene Sturmschwalben, wie etwa Buntfüssige-, Schwarzbauch-, Weissflügel- und Kapsturmvogel zu unseren ständigen Begleitern zählen. Auch Silber-, Blau- und Schneesturmvogel geben uns die Ehre. In der Nähe der Süd-Shetlandinseln können wir die ersten Eisberge ausmachen.

Tage 4 - 7: Antarktis - Unsere Reise führt uns direkt in das Herzstück der Antarktis “High Antarctica”, an Melchior Island vorbei, durch den Schollaert Kanal zwischen Brabant und Anvers Island geht es gen Süden. Unsere Fahrt führt uns anschließend nach Cuverville Island. Die kleine Felseninsel liegt zwischen dem bergigen Antarktischen Kontinent und der eisbedeckten Insel Danco. Hier nisten Eselspinguine mit Blick auf Gletscher und gestrandete Eisberge. Auch ihre Feinde, die braunen Skuas, oder Raubmöwen, ziehen hier ihre Küken groß. Wir sehen Weddell- und Krabbenfresserrobben. In Neko Harbour setzen wir zum ersten mal Fuß auf den antarktischen Kontinent. Dieses Gletschergebiet ist von atemberaubender Schönheit. Von hier geht es weiter durch die eisberggefüllte Paradiesbucht und die umliegenden Fjorde, wir besuchen die (meist verlassene) argentinische Forschungsstation Almirante Brown. Auf dem Weg in die Paradiesbucht gibt es große Wahrscheinlichkeit Buckel-, und Zwergwale zu sehen. Bei Neko Harbour oder in der Paradiesbucht machen wir Zodiacausflüge zwischen großen Eisbergen. Im Neumayer Channel kommen wir in die Nähe der historischen Forschungsstation Port Lockroy auf Goudier Island. Das südlichste Postamt der Welt wird von den Briten verwaltet. Ein Besuch der Station selber ist nicht immer garantiert und ist vom Fahrplan und Anlandegenehmigung abhängig. In der Nähe von Port Lockroy bieten wir eine Anlandung auf der kleinen Insel Jougla Point an. Dort nisten Eselspinguine und Blauaugenkormorane. Wenn die Eisverhältnisse es erlauben, durchfahren wir den spektakulären Lemaire Kanal mit seinen steilen Felswänden und mächtigen Gletschern, die krachend direkt ins Meer kalben. Südlich des Kanals besuchen wir vielleicht Petermann Island. Hier nisten Königskormorane, Esels- und Adeliepinguine. Auch Zwerg-, Finn- und Buckelwale können hier oft beobachtet werden. Mit etwas Glück können wir uns auch Leopardenrobben nähern. Auch der Besuch der ukrainischen Antarktisstation Vernadsky ist eingeplant, um Ihnen einen Eindruck vom Leben moderner Antarktisforscher vermitteln zu können. Wir werden dort freundlich empfangen und werden zu einem Stationsrundgang eingeladen Auf unserer Fahrt nach Norden durch den Neumayer Kanal kommen wir zu den Melchior Inseln, wo wir vielleicht noch eine Fahrt mit dem Zodiac anbieten können, immer auf der Suche nach Seeleoparden, Krabbenfresserrobben und Walen. Danach wird es Zeit wieder Kurs nach Südamerika zu nehmen.

Tage 8 - 9 Auf See - Auf unserer Reiseroute nach Norden über die Drake Passage begegnen wir einer Vielzahl von Seevögeln.

Tag 10 Ushuaia - Wir erreichen den Hafen von Ushuaia in den frühen Morgenstunden. Nach dem Frühstück heißt es dann Verabschiedung.

With the following information we like to give you a brief introduction on our Polar diving operation during our expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica. Polar Diving Expeditions The dive operations managed by the Waterproof Expedition team, relies on more than 15 years of experiences in Polar diving and is organized by polar dive experts who have experienced many extreme situations in the field and who are trained to search out the best opportunities for diving, taking into account the unpredictable weather and ice conditions. We maintain the highest level of safety in combination with quality diving. We don’t dive through a wide hole in the ice (no ice diving !), but in a controlled environment around small grounded icebergs, from the shore or a zodiac or an ice shell.

Another important element on our dive trips is snorkelling. Some of the best encounters we had with large mammals is by snorkelling, including Leopard seals and Humpback Whales. Snorkelling is a major part of the trip experience. The main language of the dive operation will be in English.

For the topside explorers, this means much smaller groups on a landing site or on a zodiac cruise of an area than is normally possible. For example we have between 10 and 16 guests on landings and zodiac cruises, compared with 45 or more (often much more) for a 'normal' expedition vessel. These small numbers gives us exceptional freedom to, for example, get an extra zodiac cruise on more than one occasion, and to do longer, more exploratory cruises. On the landing sites, our 'footprint' is very small – we are few enough to cause virtually no disturbance, leaving us with more rewarding interactions with the wildlife – and a feeling of being that little bit more in our own personal wilderness.

There are also occasions where the 'explorer's and the divers can add to each others' experience. Life in the Polar Regions is very much based under the sea, and divers' perspectives, photographs, videos and presentations by our staff on the underwater world have proved fascinating for our topside guests. On many occasions our topside boats alert the divers to some wildlife they hadn't seen, and vice versa. We also notice a very pleasant synergy, when divers start talking to the topside folks and hear about the landings or zodiac cruises, they often decide to 'take a dive off' and join us for a landing or a cruise. We always have a zodiac ready for those explorers who do not wish to dive, but who like to go for a long hike or take their time for topside photography.

Experienced divers These voyages are not for beginners, you’ll have to be an experienced diver and must be familiar with cold water diving and dry suit diving (at least 20 dry suit dives). Before departure you will have to show an internationally accepted diving certificate, diver’s log book and a statement from your doctor (not older than two years) stating that you are physically healthy to practice scuba diving. The voyage will start with a check-dive so all divers can get used to the cold water and adjust their weights and equipment. Before each dive, there will be a briefing about the location of the site, the weather and ice conditions and the procedure of the dive. For the advanced diver this is truly a unique experience. You will see amazing ice formations and marine life seemingly from another planet, such as the Giant Isopods and salps. Seals race fearlessly by, graceful in a way not possible above the surface. Sunlight from above creates a stunning, ever-changing spectrum of color among the diverse benthos. Take your time to explore an environment few diver have ever experienced: the kelp walls, sea snails, crabs, sea butterflies, Shrubby horsetails, jellyfish, squid, Sea hedgehogs, starfish, krill and various Antarctic fish. The waters of the Polar Oceans also support an economically important world fishery of fin fish, squid and krill, and the waters of the Polar Oceans affect all other world oceans.

Diving procedure Diving in these remote Polar areas is no more dangerous than normal scuba diving as long as one important rule is adhered to: Safety First ! All divers looking for dangerous stunts or want to make deep dives are kindly asked to stay at home. There is no decompression chamber, medical care in these polar regions is almost non-existent and there is hardly any infrastructure. Although we have a doctor on board the vessel for first aid assistance, we cannot accept risky ventures from any of our divers. The dives will be done in a 'buddy system'. If you don’t have a dive-buddy, one will be assigned to you. The divers are expected to be experienced enough to read their compass, depth gauges and look after each other in order to have a safe dive. Although the diving you will be doing while in the Polar Regions is not really considered "technical" in professional diving terminology, the conditions and gear required to dive safety do require a fair bit of experience and training. Since diving is an equipment intensive activity, diving in Polar Regions requires an extensive amount of additional equipment because of the cold weather and water, and a higher level of diving experience because of the remote location involved. You will find more detailed information on our website on Polar Diving Procedures in the section Travel Resources. Diving is no fun if you are cold and uncomfortable. Divers in cold water may have a higher air consumption rate, expend more energy, and can become more fatigued. Cold water also decreases a diver's ability to perform complex tasks that require manual dexterity.

If our dive master feels that the diver does not meet the necessary experience, he can decide to exclude the diver from the dive program (this decision will be made for your own safety). In this case, Waterproof Expeditions cannot be held (financially) responsible and does not grant any claims. All divers are required to follow the instructions of the dive master and guides at all times. All participants are diving 100 % at their own risk, which is also the case while on land during the excursions.

Marine life at the dive sites The dive sites will vary from shallow ice diving, diving along a wall or around a grounded iceberg. We don’t dive through a wide hole in the ice, but in a controlled environment under small grounded icebergs, from the shore or a zodiac or an ice shell. The maximum depth is 20 meters / 60 feet. The combination of sunlight and the often-extraordinary formations of ice cause an overwhelming, ever-changing spectre of colours, with a fantastic variety of shades and brilliance. While snorkelling or diving along the ice floes, you will be amazed and never forget these deep blue colours. Diving in the Polar areas does not only offer ice, but also an interesting marine life, such as kelp walls, sea-snails, crabs, sea butterflies, various bottom fish, shrubby horse-tails, jelly-fishes, sea-hedgehogs and starfishes. In the Antarctic and Arctic waters there is typical marine life such as sea squirts, squat lobsters, many species of starfish, spider crabs, soft corals, anemones, peacock worms, and dogfish. In Antarctica you may have the possibility to snorkel or dive with seals and penguins including the fearless Leopard Seal.

Number of dives We plan at least two dives per day (except for days at sea), but an exact number of dives cannot be given. It all depends on ice and weather conditions. Trip itineraries are a guideline. We will always try to hold to the itinerary as much as possible, but SAFETY is number one. Since this is an expedition to a remote part of the world, unpredictable weather conditions, availability of anchorages, wind conditions, and other factors beyond our control will always dictate when its safe to make a dive.

Waterproof Expeditions Dive Container Because the Polar expedition vessels are not specifically build for diving we have designed a special Dive Container that we bring on board. This provides comfortable storing space in boxes for your gear, and a heating system to dry your suit and BC. No hassle to bring your suits and gear into your cabin or inside the ship. You don’t need to store your dive gear in your cabin. Upon arrival our dive staff will show you where you can leave your dive equipment. Every diver is expected to prepare his own equipment well in advance prior to each dive. Bring your own spare parts for your regulators and dry suit in case of leakage or damage.

What to pack for your Diving

Please contact your airline about their luggage restrictions and request a special allowance for your dive equipment prior to departure. All excess baggage is at your own expense.

 All divers must have experience with dry suit diving (minimum 20 dives required).  Dry suit with hood  Thick and warm underwater garment (2 sets), dry gloves or adequate thick wet gloves (make sure they will keep your hands warm in sub-zero waters)  2 separate freeze protected regulators, because we dive with special bottles with two separate outlets. The tanks we are using are 12L steel tanks. They are fitted with a “Y” or “H” valve configuration, with DIN or Yoke (INT) adaptable connections.  Pressure gage  Stabilizing jacket or some kind of BC with quick release – divers without BDC trusting only their dry suit for buoyancy control will not be allowed to dive.  Depth gage, watch or computer  Compass  Knife and a torch  Mask, fins and snorkel  Weight belt (weights available on board)  Safety buoy

Please note that the snorkel is a vital part of the safety equipment and will often be used when snorkelling with seals and such.

IMPORTANT: Do not bring any new equipment on this expedition that you have not already tested in the water and you are not very familiar with. The Polar regions are not the place to test out new equipment. It is required that you complete a few dives with all the equipment you will be using before coming on the trip. This will also allow you to fine-tune your buoyancy and trim characteristics, and make a note of how much weight you will need when diving with all your equipment.

Equipment on board On board we have a Bauer compressor (200 litres), steel bottles of 12 litres, 200 bar, with DIN and Yoke adaptable connections and two separate outlets and enough weights. This will allow for the attachment of a primary and a secondary backup regulator, which allows for either regulator to be independently isolated if there is a malfunction or a free flow.

Expedition style travelling We offer expedition style travelling to remote polar regions where very few travellers have been. We need to adjust our routes in progress to take best advantage of weather and ice conditions—which can vary unpredictably from day to day. We are always ready to alter plans accordingly to take advantage of wildlife sightings and other one-of-a-kind opportunities. We cannot guarantee that all dives and shore landings will take place or that they will include all the events we’ve outlined in advance. Embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy and excitement of expedition-style travel, and a measure of flexibility is something all of us must bring along on the voyage. – we do not take a trip, a trip takes us... Possible alterations that relate to weather and ice conditions, can never be a reason for claims, reimbursements or whatsoever. PADI POLAR DIVER SPECIALTY COURSE

This is a unique chance to become one of the first certified Polar Divers in the world !

The Polar Diver Specialty Course can only be taken with Waterproof Expeditions in Antarctica, below the Antarctic Convergence or below 60 degrees, or in the Arctic, above the Arctic Circle.

This course is designed to be an introduction to Polar diving and help the Student diver develop the skills, knowledge and techniques necessary for diving in polar environments.

Course Overview The purpose of the PADI Polar Diving Specialty Course is to familiarize divers with the skills, knowledge, planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems, hazards, and excitement of diving in the Polar areas.

Goals • To enable the student to explain the planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards of diving in the Polar areas. • To familiarize the student with the use of any special equipment such as surface markers/floats, configuration of double regulators if used, signals, communication and recall signal. • To enable the student to engage in dives to explore the Polar environments found within depths and conditions as good as or better than those in which they have been trained safely and enjoyable.

Only Shackleton’s phenomenal leadership and the skills of men like R I U T I Frank Worsely, and saved all 28 men.

Over the 2015-17 Antarctic summers, we celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Shackleton’s 1914-17 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition on nine CKLETO SHA N historic voyages. A special program of onboard events includes an exhibit of ’s Antarctic images, a commemorative dinner, readings 10 s from Shackleton’s journal and tributes to other fascinating Antarctic explorers. 0 Year Best of all we plan visits to key historic sites (weather and ice permitting), including remote .
