Art versus Propaganda?: Georgia Douglas Johnson and Eulalie Spence as Figures who Fostered Community in the Midst of Debate Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Caroline Roberta Hill, B.A. Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2019 Thesis Committee: Jennifer Schlueter, Adviser Beth Kattelman Copyright by Caroline Roberta Hill 2019 Abstract The Harlem Renaissance and New Negro Movement is a well-documented period in which artistic output by the black community in Harlem, New York, and beyond, surged. On the heels of Reconstruction, a generation of black artists and intellectuals—often the first in their families born after the thirteenth amendment—spearheaded the movement. Using art as a means by which to comprehend and to reclaim aspects of their identity which had been stolen during the Middle Passage, these artists were also living in a time marked by the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan and segregation. It stands to reason, then, that the work that has survived from this period is often rife with political and personal motivations. Male figureheads of the movement are often remembered for their divisive debate as to whether or not black art should be politically charged. The public debates between men like W. E. B. Du Bois and Alain Locke often overshadow the actual artistic outputs, many of which are relegated to relative obscurity. Black female artists in particular are overshadowed by their male peers despite their significant interventions. Two pioneers of this period, Georgia Douglas Johnson (1880-1966) and Eulalie Spence (1894-1981), will be the subject of my thesis. -

THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE P&L 863-Rama Ndiaye[Type text] Page 1 Curriculum Development Project OVERVIEW The Harlem Renaissance was a period in which black intellectuals, poets, musicians and writers explored their cultural identity. In a society where racism was prevalent African Americans lacked economic opportunities. The creation of art, music and poetry was not only a way to economically uplift the race but also to demonstrate racial pride. The cultural movement started at the end of the First World War and ended in the middle of the Great Depression in the 1930s. Many argue that the War expanded economic opportunity in Northern cities because of industrialization and the decrease of European immigrants coming into the United States. The Great Migration in the beginning of the 20th century also played a big role in the birth of the cultural movement. African Americans in the South were experiencing social, cultural and economic oppression so when they found opportunities to escape Jim Crow laws they took their chances. The lack of a political voice and the prevalent racial hatred led many African Americans to express themselves via artistic means. Alain Locke, an African American writer, was the first to come up with the term “New Negro” talking about a spur of young black artist who were going to change the African American culture by demonstrating that their people were not subservient, good for nothing cretins. Other intellectuals such as W.E.B. Du Bois and James Weldon Johnson aided in the expansion of the movement by being spokespeople for the literary youth. -

The prospect of a center for the study of the Harlem Renaissance is terribly intriguing for future scholarly endeavors. Houston A. Baker is Distinguished University Professor and a professor of English at Vander- bilt University. He has served as president of the Modern Language Association of America and is the author of articles, books, and essays devoted to African American literary criticism and theory. His book Betrayal: How Black Intellectuals Have Abandoned the Ideals of the Civil Rights Era (2008) received an American Book Award for 2009. Emily Bernard How have your ideas about the Harlem Renaissance evolved since you first began writing about it? My ideas about the Harlem Renaissance haven’t changed much in the last twenty years, but they have expanded. I began reading and writing about the Harlem Renais- sance while I was still in college. I was initially drawn to it because of its surfaces—styl- ish people in attractive clothing, the elegant interiors and exteriors of its nightclubs and magazines. Style drew me in, but as I began to read and write more, it wasn’t the style itself but the intriguing degree of importance assigned to the issue of style that kept me interested in the Harlem Renaissance. -

After Slavery & Reconstruction: The Black Struggle in the U.S. for Freedom, Equality, and Self-Realization* —A Bibliography Patrick S. O’Donnell (2020) Jacob Lawrence, Library, 1966 Apologia— Several exceptions notwithstanding (e.g., some titles treating the Reconstruction Era), this bibliography begins, roughly, with the twentieth century. I have not attempted to comprehensively cover works of nonfiction or the arts generally but, once more, I have made— and this time, a fair number of—exceptions by way of providing a taste of the requisite material. So, apart from the constraints of most of my other bibliographies: books, in English, these particular constraints are intended to keep the bibliography to a fairly modest length (around one hundred pages). This compilation is far from exhaustive, although it endeavors to be representative of the available literature, whatever the influence of my idiosyncratic beliefs and 1 preferences. I trust the diligent researcher will find titles on particular topics or subject areas by browsing carefully through the list. I welcome notice of titles by way of remedying any deficiencies. Finally, I have a separate bibliography on slavery, although its scope is well beyond U.S. history. * Or, if you prefer, “self-fulfillment and human flourishing (eudaimonia).” I’m not here interested in the question of philosophical and psychological differences between these concepts (i.e., self- realization and eudaimonia) and the existing and possible conceptions thereof, but more simply and broadly in their indispensable significance in reference to human nature and the pivotal metaphysical and moral purposes they serve in our critical and evaluative exercises (e.g., and after Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum, in employing criteria derived from the notion of ‘human capabilities and functionings’) as part of our individual and collective historical quest for “the Good.” However, I might note that all of these concepts assume a capacity for self- determination. -

INTRODUCTION N APRIL 1972 THE GOVERNMENT of Senegal inaugurated an exhibition of art by Pablo Picasso at the Musée Dynamique I near downtown Dakar (figure 1).1 Only sparse visual documen- tation of the exhibition has survived, but the details of the exhibi- tion ended up mattering less than did its catalytic function for reassessing, in Dakar, the direction and scope of art nègre—or “black art.”2 By 1972 “black art,” a category with its own circuitous genealogy dating from the early twentieth century, had come to encompass canonical African sculpture as well as modern painting and sculpture by artists of African descent. The category’s critical reassessment took place mainly through a conference, “Picasso, Art Nègre, et Civilisation de l’Universel” (Picasso, black art, and civilization of the universal), organized in conjunction with the Dakar exhibition and featuring prominent artists and intellectuals from Senegal and France.3 At the conference, African sculpture held a pivotal place in discussions of Picasso’s practice, which, in turn, became a contested terrain where the stakes of African mod- ernism were up for debate. 1 60870txt.indd 1 20-02-13 5:44 AM figure 1 Pablo Picasso, exhibition poster, Musée Dynamique, Dakar, 1972, lithograph, 21 ½ × 30 in. GENTRIFICATION IN OKLAHOMA CITY: EXAMINING URBAN REVITALIZATION IN MIDDLE AMERICA Clint C. Meernik, Acting Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Petty, Clint C. Gentrification in Oklahoma City: Examining Urban Revitalization in Middle America. Master of Science (Applied Geography), August 2011, 63 pp., 7 tables, 20 illustrations, 58 titles. Gentrification applies not only to the largest and oldest cities; it is a multi-scalar phenomenon playing out in smaller and less prominent settings as well. This study examines temporal changes in property values, demographic characteristics, and types of businesses in the central Oklahoma City area. A major urban revitalization project which began in 1993 created strong gentrification characteristics near the renewal's epicenter, the Bricktown entertainment district. Data suggest that several specific neighborhoods in the surrounding area exhibited rising property values, improving educational attainment rates, decreasing household sizes, and a shift toward cosmopolitan retail activity. While it is evident that Bricktown has been transformed, the socio-economic traits of surrounding neighborhoods have been altered by the ripple effects of urban renewal. Copyright 2011 By Clint C. 1 LEWIS HAYDEN and the UNDERGROUND RAILROAD ewis Hayden died in Boston on Sunday morning April 7, 1889. L His passing was front- page news in the New York Times as well as in the Boston Globe, Boston Herald and Boston Evening Transcript. Leading nineteenth century reformers attended the funeral including Frederick Douglass, and women’s rights champion Lucy Stone. The Governor of Massachusetts, Mayor of Boston, and Secretary of the Commonwealth felt it important to participate. Hayden’s was a life of real signi cance — but few people know of him today. A historical marker at his Beacon Hill home tells part of the story: “A Meeting Place of Abolitionists and a Station on the Underground Railroad.” Hayden is often described as a “man of action.” An escaped slave, he stood at the center of a struggle for dignity and equal rights in nine- Celebrate teenth century Boston.
