February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. • NATIVE PLANT FIELD GUIDE Revised March 2012
NATIVE PLANT FIELD GUIDE Revised March 2012 Hansen's Northwest Native Plant Database www.nwplants.com Foreword Once upon a time, there was a very kind older gentleman who loved native plants. He lived in the Pacific northwest, so plants from this area were his focus. As a young lad, his grandfather showed him flowers and bushes and trees, the sweet taste of huckleberries and strawberries, the smell of Giant Sequoias, Incense Cedars, Junipers, pines and fir trees. He saw hummingbirds poking Honeysuckles and Columbines. He wandered the woods and discovered trillium. When he grew up, he still loved native plants--they were his passion. He built a garden of natives and then built a nursery so he could grow lots of plants and teach gardeners about them. He knew that alien plants and hybrids did not usually live peacefully with natives. In fact, most of them are fierce enemies, not well behaved, indeed, they crowd out and overtake natives. He wanted to share his information so he built a website. It had a front page, a page of plants on sale, and a page on how to plant natives. But he wanted more, lots more. So he asked for help. I volunteered and he began describing what he wanted his website to do, what it should look like, what it should say. He shared with me his dream of making his website so full of information, so inspiring, so educational that it would be the most important source of native plant lore on the internet, serving the entire world.

KYLE MACLACHLAN ACCLAIMED ACTOR KYLE MACLACHLAN has brought indelible charm and a quirky sophistication to some of film and television’s most memorable roles. Since 2005, MacLachlan has channeled his strong interest in the world of wine into a second, equally satisfying professional pursuit. A native of Yaki- ma, Wash., located in the heart of the Columbia Valley wine appellation MacLachlan has produced three highly-rated Columbia Valley wines: Pursued by Bear Cabernet Sauvignon, Baby Bear Syrah and his most recent, Blushing Bear Rosé. What began as an unabashed love for his home state and a desire to stay connected to his family roots has become a true passion and dedication to the craft of winemaking. MacLachlan has be- come an advocate and evangelist for the unique properties and flavor profile of Washington state wines. He is personally involved in every aspect of Pursued by Bear wines. MacLachlan sees a connection between acting and winemaking in terms of the combination and balance of process, patience and creativity. He chose to call his wine Pursued by Bear as an homage to perhaps the most famous of all stage directions, “exit, pursued by bear,” from Act III, scene iii of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. It’s a funny and unexpected phrase that’s not only a nod to his theatrical roots but also plays to his sense of humor. “It just seemed to fit what I was trying to do,” he said. MacLachlan is perhaps best known for his performance as FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper in David Lynch’s ground-breaking series Twin Peaks, for which he received two Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe Award.

AM: I am at home for a couple of weeks, we’re going back out on the 19th JF: How long will you be out on the road? AM: This time I think it’s just a few weeks. JF: So, you live in LA? AM: Yes JF: Does being in LA help you get involved with film work as well as music? AM: You know I think there is a thing that living in LA, it helps just being around, there are certain things where you just run into people or seeing someone at a party and they have a project, it’s more likely that they think of you than somebody that they haven’t seen for a long time, I think there’s a weird causal effect that helps JF: Is that how you wound up playing a maid in Portlandia? AM: Yeah, well, I’ve known Fred Armisen for a long time, he lived out here, i knew him from the Largo Comedy scene, there’s a comedy club out here called Cafe Largo and um, before he was on Saturday Night Live, so, yeah, we’ve been friends for a long time, I did meet him out here. JF: Do you have any projects like that coming up or do they just pop up randomly? AM: There’s a new Comedy Central TV show, I don’t think it will be out until next year, called Anton Deville (somewhat inaudible ?) and I have a part, I am in one of those, it’s fun to get calls for that stuff JF: Are you still married to Michael Penn? AM: Yes JF: How come I never really hear about his music anymore? AM: He’s not into performing, it’s not his thing, he does a lot of scoring, he scored The Girls TV show and Masters Of Sex, he likes to be more behind the scenes.

A chainmail mesh that protects against despair, fake news, and cynicism. Overstatement? Perhaps. Like all compelling utopias, Wikipedia and working in the Wikipedia community does have a dark underside. But let’s look at the light . The Working Wikipedia Collaborative is a group of scholars, teachers, archivists, and librarians working with Wikipedia in higher ed in the Boston area — all women, some rogues, and all convinced of the educational and societal value of the utopian Wikipedia project. Three of us share our stories in this chapter, but these are just a part of the work the Collaborative has done together — workshops local, national, and global, presentations, in-class orientations, cross-institutional visits, publications, edit-a-thons, mentoring circles, and elevator pitches. Collaborative members are active sharers in the participatory and collaborative knowledge creation movement that some have come to call Wikiworld. We always write as the Working Wikipedia Collaborative, but each of our origin stories is unique — and strongly shaped by working with and on Wikipedia. • Branding the Iconic Ideals of Vivienne Westwood, Barack Obama, and Pope Francis
PUNK, OBAMACARE, AND A JESUIT: BRANDING THE ICONIC IDEALS OF VIVIENNE WESTWOOD, BARACK OBAMA, AND POPE FRANCIS AIDAN MOIR A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION & CULTURE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO April 2021 © Aidan Moir, 2021 Abstract Practices of branding, promotion, and persona have become dominant influences structuring identity formation in popular culture. Creating an iconic brand identity is now an essential practice required for politicians, celebrities, global leaders, and other public figures to establish their image within a competitive media landscape shaped by consumer society. This dissertation analyzes the construction and circulation of Vivienne Westwood, Barack Obama, and Pope Francis as iconic brand identities in contemporary media and consumer culture. The content analysis and close textual analysis of select media coverage and other relevant material on key moments, events, and cultural texts associated with each figure deconstructs the media representation of Westwood, Obama, and Pope Francis. The brand identities of Westwood, Pope Francis, and Obama ultimately exhibit a unique form of iconic symbolic power, and exploring the complex dynamics shaping their public image demonstrates how they have achieved and maintained positions of authority. Although Westwood, Obama, and Pope Francis initially were each positioned as outsiders to the institutions of fashion, politics, and religion that they now represent, the media played a key role in mainstreaming their image for public consumption. Their iconic brand identities symbolize the influence of consumption in shaping how issues of public good circulate within public discourse, particularly in regard to the economy, health care, social inequality, and the environment.
