7 An air of excitement? Rev’d. Jeff Wilson

Finally it’s summer and there is an amount of excitement in the air. For some people, it’s excitement about sport; the rugby game against those Aussies, tennis in Paris, then at Queens, then at Wimbledon, the British Formula 1 at Silverstone. For others, it’s time for the six weeks holidays from school. While some look forward to their annual holiday, perhaps by the seaside in Britain or abroad. In the church, the excitement of the major festivals which celebrate the life of Jesus have been and gone. We had Advent preparing for Christmas; Epiphany remembering the visit of the Wise men to worship Jesus; Lent preparing for Easter; Pentecost (Whitsuntide) celebrating the gift to us of the Holy Spirit; Trinity Sunday saw us celebrating God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. But now it’s what is called Ordinary Time which will last until Advent at the beginning of December. It’s time to enjoy what Summer brings for us, holidays for some, sport for others, BBQ’s and whatever the British weather casts upon us. Once in Holland, I met someone in a bar, and when he heard my appalling attempt to order drinks in his language, immediately guessed I was British. We spoke for a time, in English of course, he said that he watched the BBC programmes. He commented that we seem obsessed with the weather. I told him that in Britain we know when it is summer because the rain is warm. He thought about this, then said he understood this to be a joke I was making. He said it was very funny, but he didn’t even smile. Whatever this season of summer brings you, try to recharge your physical and mental “batteries” ready for the next season. It’s also important to recharge our spiritual “batteries”. The excitement of the major festivals help some people to kindle their faith. However, for many people a time of reflection or even a retreat from their everyday lives recharges them spiritually. Take time out, if you can, to think about your life, think about your hopes, aspirations, dreams. Prayer is not just for Sundays. Prayer connects us to God. We need not use complicated prayers, or pray aloud. Just pray as if you are talking to someone who loves you, because it’s true, God loves you. Talk to him, tell him your hopes and fears, for yourself and for others. You’ll find it helps to clarify your mind, and brings peace. There’s a story about a lady interviewed on radio. The presenter asked her her views on prayer. She said she knows God hears & answers prayers. Sometimes the answer is 8 YES, sometimes the answer is NO, and sometimes answer is NOT YET. She went on to say she is happy with YES, she can accept NO,but is unhappy about NOT YET. The Interviewer asked what she means. She replied: “I keep imagining what I will do if I wake up one morning, to find tied to the bottom of the bed, the Shetland Pony, that I prayed so hard for when I was 7 years old. I won’t finish by saying “God be with you”, because I know he is. Jeff

Waddingham Annual Parish Council meeting was held in the Jubilee Hall on Monday 1st July 2013. Eight Parish Councillors, the Clerk and eight members of the public were in attendance. Items discussed at the meeting included:

• Eight members of the Public attended the Parish Council meeting and in ‘Public Time’, expressed concerns with the continuing closure of the Marquis of Granby Public House. Local residents are worried because the Pub has been closed for several months now and there still doesn’t appear to be any attempt by the owners to appoint or advertise for new tenants. The Parish Council will write to Punch Taverns and West Lindsey District Council expressing Members and the Publics concerns. • The Parish Council will continue to report on the numerous pot-holes around the Waddingham area. • The Parish Council will also write to Highways regarding the very long grass on the verges along Redbourne Road and especially Little Carr Hill and ask when it is likely to be cut. • The County Council has provided information on the proposed changes to library services in the County, mainly due to the challenge to provide services with significantly reduced resources. Under the proposals, Waddingham will receive provision of ‘one hour a month mobile library stop’ from 6th May 2014. A Public Consultation is to be launched to look into this. • The Parish Council viewed an amended planning application in respect of the proposed ‘ten turbine wind farm’ at Hemswell Cliff. Members discussed the matter and unanimously agreed to ‘strongly object’ to the application on the grounds of traffic and highways safety concerns and the detrimental impact on the County Council. • Members viewed a planning application to erect a single storey detached garage at Claremont, 2, The Wolds, Waddingham. There were no concerns or objection to the application. • The Clerk reported balances totalling £15,718.27, which includes the grant funding, received for maintenance use over ten years on the new Flood Relief Scheme. • Outstanding accounts due to HM Revenue & Customs for the Clerks tax, Internal Audit Fees and JW Cousins & Sons Farmers Ltd for grass cutting costs in May & June 2013 were approved and paid in the sum of £486.60. • The next Parish Council meeting will be held in the Jubilee Hall on Monday 16th September 2013. The meeting will commence at 7.45pm or on conclusion of the Public Time, whichever is the sooner. 14 Waddingham Tractor Rally Waddingham 200 Club and Summer Fete July Winners Thank you to everyone who £30 - 170 - Kathleen Cook - donated raffle prizes, the Friends of Atterby Waddingham Village Hall who helped on stalls and anyone else who came £15 - 64 - Diane Groves - and supported this event. Mary Poppins was travelling home, but due to worsening weather, she decided to stop at a hotel for the night. She approached the receptionist & asked for a room for the night. “Certainly madam”, he replied courteously. “Is the restaurant open still?” asked Mary. “Sorry, no,” came the reply, “but room service is available all night. Would you care to select something from this menu?” Mary smiled & took the menu & perused it. “Hmm, I would like cauliflower cheese please,” said Mary. “Certainly madam,” he replied. “Can I have breakfast in bed?” asked Mary politely. The receptionist nodded & smiled. “In that case, I would love a couple of poached eggs please,” Mary mused. After confirming the order, Mary signed in & went up to her room for the night. The night passed uneventfully & next morning Mary came down early to check out. The same guy was still on the desk. “Morning madam. Sleep well?” “Yes, thank you,” Mary replied. “Food to your liking?” “Well, I have to say the cauliflower cheese was exceptional, I don’t think I have had better. Shame about the eggs though. They really weren’t that nice at all,” replied Mary truthfully. “Oh, well, perhaps you could contribute these thoughts to our Guest Comments Book. We are always looking to improve our service & would value your opinion,” said the receptionist. “OK, I will. Thanks!” replied Mary who checked out, then scribbled a comment into the book. Waving, she left to continue her journey. Curious, the receptionist picked up the book to see the comment Mary had written. “Supercauliflowercheesebuteggswerequiteatrocious!” 23 Village Hall Dates
