Excerpt from Encyclopedia of Jewish Food Foulare/Folar Foulare is a sweet pastry enwrapping a hard- boiled egg or a Sephardic long- cooked egg. Origin: Iberia Other names: Greek: folariko; Italian: scalera. For a special treat, Sephardim enwrap huevos haminados (long- cooked eggs) or plain hard- boiled eggs in sweet yeast dough; as the pastries bake, the eggs bake into the dough. The dish is called foulare, which is Ladino for “scarf/enwrapping.” Cooks take great pride in the artistry of these pastries, frequently creating a different design for every family member. Each person removes the egg from the pastry, then peels and eats it as well as the sweet bread. The name of the eggs, haminados, sounds similar to that of the evil Persian prime minister, Haman, in the Purim story and— analogous to the Ashkenazic hamantaschen— eggs are referred to as huevos de Haman (Haman’s eggs). The pastry- wrapped eggs are traditionally served on Purim as well as the Sabbath preceding it, Shabbat Zakhor, when the weekly Torah portion mentions Haman’s ancestor, Amalek. Consequently, Shabbat Zakhor is referred to as Shabbat de Foulares. For Purim, the shape of the pastry is meant to symbolize either Haman’s prison bars (a basket with strips over the top of the egg) and/or parts of his anatomy (Haman’s foot and Haman’s ear). The pastries are first displayed on fancy plates before being consumed by children and adults, usually for Purim breakfast, as few can wait. Foulares may also be included among the food gifts in a Sephardic Purim misholach manot (sent portions). -

Sephardic Customs and Jewish Religious Rituals and Festivals
Sephardic Customs and Jewish Religious Rituals and Festivals In this chapter we gathered evidence of traditional customs from the Jewish community. Some of them are common to the ‘Sephardi’ Jewish culture and some are unique to the Jewish community of Izmir. We tried to understand the atmosphere surrounding those religious rituals and festivals, including traditional foods, objects, etc. The “Kucharera” The “Kucharera”, or “Tavola di Dolci” (Ladino), is a silver vessel for presenting sweets to welcome guests. The custom of presenting sweets to a guest is one of the characteristics of hospitality common to Christians and Jews in the Balkans and in the western territories of the Ottoman Empire, as Yohas indicates (Yohas, 1994). That custom is preserved by the Izmir Sephardi Jews with its typical set of vessels. This custom is not known among the Turks. When a guest enters a Jewish house in Izmir, one of the girls, a bride or another woman enters carrying a “Tavola di Dolci” (a tray of sweets). The tray is usually made of silver and has an ornamented container at its center - “Kucharera” (from the word “kuchare” means spoon), with a place for hanging personal spoons and forks. On the tray there are two or more “palaticos” - small plates containing two kinds of marmalades and water glasses. The guest takes some of the sweets with the spoon or the fork. When one finishes eating, s/he places the spoon or fork in the center container, and then drinks the water. Later s/he is served Turkish coffee. The kind of sweets presented were usually fruit marmalade like “naranjes” - marmalade made of a kind of orange, “Kayisi” - apricot marmalade, “sharopi” – white sweets made of water with sugar, almonds and walnuts. -

The Movement to Free Soviet Jews, a New Exhibition Exploring One of the Most Successful Human Rights Campaigns to Date

PHILADELPHIA, PA.- The National Museum of American Jewish History presents Power of Protest: The Movement to Free Soviet Jews, a new exhibition exploring one of the most successful human rights campaigns to date. The panel exhibition showcases Americans’ efforts in the late 1960s through 1990 to free refuseniks—Jews who lived in the Soviet Union and were denied the rights to live freely, practice Judaism, or leave the country due to their religion. It is on view at NMAJH December 6, 2017 through January 15, 2018, and will then travel to a number of venues across the country. Ivy Barsky, NMAJH’s CEO and Gwen Goodman Director, states, “The successful movement to free Soviet Jews has compelling connections to modern-day advocacy, highlighting how 1 grassroots efforts can have an enormous impact. Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated. -

SWP Research Paper Peter Lintl The Haredim as a Challenge for the Jewish State The Culture War over Israel’s Identity Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik German Institute for International and Security Affairs SWP Research Paper 14 December 2020, Berlin Abstract ∎ A culture war is being waged in Israel: over the identity of the state, its guiding principles, the relationship between religion and the state, and generally over the question of what it means to be Jewish in the “Jewish State”. ∎ The Ultra-Orthodox community or Haredim are pitted against the rest of the Israeli population. The former has tripled in size from four to 12 per- cent of the total since 1980, and is projected to grow to over 20 percent by 2040. That projection has considerable consequences for the debate. ∎ The worldview of the Haredim is often diametrically opposed to that of the majority of the population. They accept only the Torah and religious laws (halakha) as the basis of Jewish life and Jewish identity, are critical of democratic principles, rely on hierarchical social structures with rabbis at the apex, and are largely a-Zionist. ∎ The Haredim nevertheless depend on the state and its institutions for safeguarding their lifeworld. Their (growing) “community of learners” of Torah students, who are exempt from military service and refrain from paid work, has to be funded; and their education system (a central pillar of ultra-Orthodoxy) has to be protected from external interventions. These can only be achieved by participation in the democratic process. ∎ Haredi parties are therefore caught between withdrawal and influence. -

POB 780, 91007 Jerusalem, Israel Abstract We translate print media coverage into a gauge of human sentiment and the equivalent advertisement value, and find that the tone of media coverage substantially impacts stock markets. The tone has a positive effect on both overnight and daily stock returns but not on intraday returns, while conditional variance and daily price gaps are negatively influenced. This effect is significant on days of sharp price declines. -
