As 2006 draws to a close and I reflect on the business of the year, I provide the following report to the Hockey WA membership.

Strategic Plan: At the January Board Retreat a review of our plan took place with new objectives included for 2006. Our advisory committees and staff have worked together to achieve those objectives; the second year of our three year plan.

Changes to the first grade competition, management of the Perth Hockey Stadium and the submission to retain the Hockey Australia High Performance Program are three of the “big ticket” projects that were successfully undertaken this year and are reported separately in this and the elite Competitions provided great support to the Finance Department. Annual Report 2006.indd 6 20/11/2006 4:48:23 PM The metropolitan senior competition review continued during the year with a number of new initiatives ready for implementation in the 2007 season. These include aligning the women’s structure with the men’s, a more flexible promotion and relegation system, merging of the C and 2B competitions, and more stringent alignment of elite turf teams in the elite turf competition. Ongoing review will determine if the original objectives are being met through these changes.

There were thirty state teams representing WA in national championships throughout Australia during 2006. This required approximately sixty volunteer coaches and managers, 00 volunteer selectors, and almost 500 players requiring selection, uniforms, flights and accommodation. Alison had the daunting task of coordinating all these activities and tasks with support from the Indoor, Veterans and High Performance and Coaching Committee.

The task of formulating the foundations of the competitions model has been an exhaustive process. It has been difficult to present the most ideal model with so many stake holders to consider.

I am confident we have developed a model for a competition that will see playing numbers return to hockey, promote a positive inter club culture and allow for all clubs to provide the opportunity for players to enjoy their hockey on a variety of different playing levels.

The committee this year comprised Mal Skinner, Catherine McFarlane, Bill Campbell, Maris Margetts, Rob lawson, Tracey Hough, Peter Westlund, lorraine Browning, Johnson Orr, Janelle leiper (staff) and myself.

The main focus for the year was the standardisation of competitions and operations for the state sides for both the men’s and women’s divisions and I believe we are now well down the path to achieving this goal.

It was pleasing to see the expansion of the Women’s midweek competition to 2 teams, which enabled the competition to be split into three divisions for the first time.

The men’s division had 7 teams competing in the Saturday afternoon competition in age groups ranging from over 40 to over 60. The midweek competition continued to flourish and I am sure it played a big part in the State’s success at the national Championships.

The Women held their Championships in Darwin, and the Over 35 team is to be congratulated in winning their division. The women were more successful than at any previous Women’s national Championship.

The Men conducted their National Championship in Perth this year and what a success they were, both on and off the field.

Thanks must be given to those involved in organising and running the SmokeFree WA Australian Veterans Championship: Bill Campbell, Peter Westlund, Max Viner, Shane Knapp, Steve Mcentee, Peter Fogels, Graham napier, Bob Bowyer and to the numerous volunteers who helped out each day.

On the field WA were successful in the Over 45, Over 50, Over 55 and Over 65 Divisions and were runners up in the Over 40 Division

WA was also well represented in the Australian teams selected at both the men’s and women’s Championships. Congratulations to all who were selected. In closing I would like to thank Janelle leiper for her assistance on the committee this year.

The Officiating Committee has been restructured for 2007 and will include various portfolios including coaching (2 members), junior umpiring (2 members), recruitment, club based umpiring, appointments, country umpiring, technical and social & recognition. each portfolio will have at least one elected member with specific tasks, roles and responsibilities. They will be supported by our full time Officiating Officer at Hockey WA, Kelly Colgan, who has recently taken up her appointment.

Officiating at times is a difficult task and our many volunteer umpires and officials do not receive the recognition they deserve; however, thanks to our new sponsor, Hockey Action, we were at least able to provide new shirts and warm jackets to each Hockey WA official this season. Our sincere thanks to Hockey Action for their support.

We urge all players, coaches and club administrators to support our officials in the future as we cannot play the game without them. A small thank you after a game goes a long way to encouraging these volunteers to continue to volunteer their time.

Finally, thanks to all the Officiating Committee for their work in 2006, especially John nettleton, Cameron Scadding, Graham napier, Barry O’Sullivan and Frank Brown for their tireless work and I urge them all to nominate again in 2007.
