I am well aware of the energies put forth in your communities to creatememorable and rewarding library experiences for youngsters each summer. In my 12 years as state superintendent, one of the programsI've been proudest of is the Summer Library Program. It stands out as an "institution"characterized by freedom, joy, and laughter. The programs you carry out are vital componentsin the education of our children, but they are outside the strictures of any school setting.While children participate in this purely recreational activity, their reading skills and powersof analysis are strength- ened and their imaginations are stimulated. An additionalbenefit, is that their families also learn more about the wealth and variety of available public library resources. As I think about the "Go Wild! Read!" theme this year,it strikes me as an irresistible invitation to explore the limitless riches of Wisconsin's publiclibraries.Furthermore, exploration of Wisconsin's outdoor riches is encouraged by thissummer's statewide incentive award. The DPI is happy to coordinate with the Departmentof Natural Resources to provide one-day entry passes to Wisconsin's state parks. The passeswill be presented to Summer Library Program participants who complete the "Go Wild! Read!" programrequirements established by the local library. The Department of Public Instruction is proud of its associationwith community librarian c and is pleased to make available materials contributed byand developed with the cooperation of librarians across the state. Read!" is a theme that can lead you and your young library users to a multiplicity of interesting materials. Keith Baker's moonlit poster sets the stage for enjoying the Wisconsin outdoors, but his congenial characters may be reading about anything under the moon! So, as you prepare for this summer's activities, you can make use of reading matter about recycling, information about insects, poems about pollution, resources about natural resources, essays about the environment, compilations about camping,dictionaries about dinosaurs, series about species, videos about vines, journals about jungles. reference books about rain forests, tomes about trees, books about bears, tunes about trash, works about water, novels about nature, recordings about rabbits, and much more! This manual brings together many ideas of practical value. More than 50 Wisconsin librarians contributed to the manual in various ways.Ideas also were gleaned from Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources publications and recehz. summer library pro- gram manuals from Arizona and Iowa. Use the manual as a guide to programpreparation. The Department of Public Instruction also has printed promotional materials to complement the "Go Wild! Read!" theme, including large and small posters, cut and uncut bookmarks, reading records, achievement certificates, a button; and a stamp. Baker grew up in Oregon and is a graduate of Eastern Oregon State College.He taught elementary school for seven years before attending Art Center College of Designin Pasadena, California, where he received a degree in illustration. He has written andillustrated four books for children, all published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich: The Dove'sLetter (1988), The Magic Fan (1989), Who Is the Beast? (1990), and Hide and Snake (1991).The Dove's Letter won a Parents' Choice Award for Illustration. The Magic Fan was a 1989School Library Journal Best Book. Who Is the Beast? received Parents' Choice Honors. OBJECTS IN TOM STOPPARD’S ARCADIA SUSAN BLATTÈS Université Stendhal—Grenoble 3 The simplicity of the single set in Arcadia1 with its rather austere furniture, bare floor and uncurtained windows has been pointed out by critics, notably in comparison with some of Stoppard’s earlier work. This relatively timeless set provides, on one level, an unchanging backdrop for the play’s multiple complexities in terms of plot, ideas and temporal structure. However we should not conclude that the set plays a secondary role in the play since the mysteries at the centre of the plot can only be solved here and with this particular group of characters. Furthermore, I would like to suggest that the on-stage objects play a similarly vital role by gradually transforming our first impressions and contributing to the multi-layered meaning of the play. In his study on the theatre from a phenomenological perspective, Bert O. States writes: “Theater is the medium, par excellence, that consumes the real in its realest forms […] Its permanent spectacle is the parade of objects and processes in transit from environment to imagery” [STATES 1985 : 40]. This paper will look at some of the parading or paraded objects in Arcadia. The objects are many and various, as can be seen in the list provided in the Samuel French acting edition (along with lists of lighting and sound effects). We will see that there are not only many different objects, but also that each object can be called upon to assume different functions at different moments, hence the rather playful question in the title of this paper (an allusion to the popular game “Twenty Questions” in which the identity of an object has to be guessed), suggesting we consider the objects as a kind of challenge to the spectator, who is set the task of identifying and interpreting them.

The Student Senate Thition and Fee Review Committee met Thursday to make its final vote on student fees for next year. Following the committee's approval, the fee proposals must be approved by the Student Senate, vice president for student affairs, the President's Council and Eastern's Board of Trustees. The largest increase of the fees will come in the network fee, which will increase to $48 per semester to fund a 10-year network improvement project.
