Head Coach: Rob Berkowitz (LIU Southampton ’97), 5th year Asst. Coach: Meagan DeWan Grad. Asst.: Jenny Polak Head Coach Rob Berkowitz

Rob Berkowitz completed his fi fth season as head women’s soccer coach and fi rst season as men’s head coach at East Stroudsburg University during the fall 2011 season.

Berkowitz, who has guided the women’s program to three PSAC Tournaments and one NCAA Tournament appearance, added men’s soccer responsibilities following the retirement of Jerry Sheska, who led the Warriors to 424 wins, 15 PSAC championships and 16 NCAA Tournament appearances in 29 seasons.

Berkowitz has a 51-38-9 record for a .566 winning percentage with the women’s program since coming to ESU in 2007 and has taken the Warriors to a cumulative 28-30-6 mark in conference play.

The men’s program nearly rallied for a PSAC Tournament trip during the second half of the 2011 season. ESU fi nished 5-8-4 (3-4-2 PSAC), but went 4-0-3 during a key stretch in October and had three straight PSAC wins over Slippery Rock, Mercyhurst and Gan- non to get back in the playoff hunt. Midfi elder Nick Fischer was named fi rst team NSCAA All-Region and back Khriswayne Wallace was named to the second team. Both were fi rst team All-PSAC selections. Forward Nemanja Nikolic was an Academic All-America selection and Wallace was also named Academic All-District.

He was named PSAC East Coach of the Year in his inaugural season with the women’s program in 2007, guiding ESU to a 12-7-1 re- cord (8-3-1 PSAC East) and a PSAC semifi nal berth after taking over a program that posted a 3-9 conference record the year before he arrived.

The Warriors claimed the No. 2 seed in the PSAC East and beat Bloomsburg 1-0 in the quarterfi nals before falling to eventual PSAC champion West Chester. ESU started the season with a 2-3 record before rattling off a 9-1-1 stretch. The squad was led by back Brittany Staub, the PSAC East Player of the Year. Midfi elder Janel Cleffi , forward Lynda Hicks and goalkeeper Janine Turcio were also All-PSAC East.

The Warriors were in the PSAC semifi nals once again in 2008, when they went to penalty kicks with IUP to fall just short of the fi nal, and earned the fi rst NCAA Tournament win in school history with a 4-0 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan. ESU went 12-6-4 and was 7-1-1 down the stretch to qualify for its second straight PSAC Tournament. The Warriors won 2-1 at Bloomsburg before falling 9-8 on penalty kicks against IUP in a game that was tied 1-1 after overtime. Four players were named to All-Region teams - Hicks at forward, Cleffi and Lindsay Foder in the midfi eld and Turcio in goal - and sweeper Tara Takac was also named All-PSAC East.

ESU qualifi ed for the PSAC Tournament for the third straight season in 2009. The Warriors successfully replaced six starters, in- cluding three All-Region selections, while starting as many as six freshmen on their way to an 11-7-2 record. Foder, a junior, and freshman back Carly Collins were both fi rst team All-PSAC East and shared the team’s MVP award. Forward Kailyn Buckley, mid- fi elder Devon Miniscalco, the team’s leading scorer, and midfi elder Crystal Zerbe, were all second team all-conference. Four players - Foder, Collins, Zerbe and Miniscalco - landed on All-Region teams.

In 2010, preseason injuries to Collins and top freshman Katie Metrokotsas got the Warriors off to a slow start as they opened PSAC (single-division) play with a 1-4 record. A late-season surge, including four straight shutouts and a 464-minute shutout streak, gave ESU a chance to qualify for the PSAC Tournament late in the season before fi nishing at 8-9-1 (5-9 PSAC). Foder was named to the All-PSAC second team at forward and freshman Michelle Gogolen was a third team choice at back.

This past fall, ESU used a four-game shutout streak late in the season to fi nish 8-9-1 overall (4-9-1 PSAC). Midfi elder Cree Julian and Collins were named to the NSCAA All-Region team and Collins was third team All-PSAC East. Back Ashley McKenna was an Aca- demic All-District selection.

In all, Berkowitz has had nine individual players earn All-Region honors and 11 earn spots on All-PSAC teams in his fi rst fi ve sea- sons. Foder was ESU’s 2011 Senior Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a two-time PSAC Fall Top 10 and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection. Buckley also graduated in 2011 and was named to three Academic All-District teams. Both players fi nished in ESU’s top 10 in career points and Hicks, an Academic All-District selection in 2008, ranks third with 38 career goals.

Berkowitz was named the third head coach of the program in April 2007 after spending seven years at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C. He was promoted to associate head coach in the summer of 2004, a position that he held for his fi nal three seasons.

A native of Wantagh, N.Y., Berkowitz also served as the recruiting coordinator and the goalkeepers coach for the Runnin’ Bulldogs Division I program. Gardner-Webb’s goalkeepers fl ourished under Berkowitz, as Hilary George and Edie Hering both fi nished their careers among the top three in career shutouts in the school record books. In 2001, George earned NCCAA All-America and All-Tournament honors after setting school records with 7.5 shutouts and a 0.81 goals against average.

Berkowitz was an assistant men’s soccer coach at Averett University, a Division III institution in Danville, Va., from 1998-2000. He has also been the goalkeepers coach for the Gardner-Webb men’s team, the head coach of the Greater Cleveland County Soccer Association U-18 Boys’ Premier Team, and the director of coaching for GCCSA goalkeepers.

A 1997 graduate of LIU Southampton College, Berkowitz was a three-year starter for the nationally-ranked squad and was a team captain during his junior and senior seasons. He set school records for career wins and shutouts during his college career, and helped the Colonials to ECAC championships in 1994 and 1995. He also earned the Southampton College Scholar-Athlete Award as a senior. Berkowitz was a graduate assistant coach at LIU Southampton for the 1997 season.

Berkowitz graduated cum laude with departmental honors with a bachelor of science degree in Business Administration and Sports Marketing from LIU Southampton College, and holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Gardner-Webb University, which he earned in August 2006. He has also completed credit hours towards a Master’s of Arts in Teaching from Aver- ett University.
