Furs to Furriers in Dunedin, New Zealand, to 1940 Evan James Tosh A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Consumer and Applied Science at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. August 2005 Declaration To be added later ii Abstract This thesis chronicles the development of the fur trade in Dunedin from the 1870s to 1940. The fur trade in Dunedin started in response to the large numbers of rabbit skins and meat that were able to be marketed following the explosion in introduced rabbit numbers in the 1870s. Most rabbit traders diversified into buying and selling other products of the land, but a few became more involved in the fur trade, by concentrating on the rabbit trade or by diversifying into fur dressing and/or manufacturing and retailing fur garments. Dunedin became the major source of skins for export, and also was home to the main fur processing factory, and largest fur garment manufacturing operation in the country. Government measures to foster local industries and employment through the use of protective tariffs are examined. The demand for fur garments and the protection of these tariffs aided the development of fur garment manufacturers from 1920 onwards. The controversy over whether the commercial use of rabbits hindered the policy of rabbit destruction is examined. Whilst the Government tried to encourage rabbit destruction it did not hinder the trade in rabbit meat or skins. This contrasts with the official attitude to opossums, as population increases were encouraged in order to build up a fur trades. But by the late 1920s it was realised that the opossum was actually damaging forests and had become a pest. -

Preface The annual conference and scientific meeting of the Nutrition Society of New Zealand took place in Wellington, New Zealand from 1–4 December 2015. Every two years, a joint scientific meeting with the Nutrition Society of Australia is held, alternating between Australia and New Zealand. The 2015 meeting comprised four plenary sessions, 18 concurrent oral sessions and over 100 posters, providing an opportunity for more than 140 nutritional scientists to present their research. Abstracts for plenary talks and for members of the Nutrition Society of New Zealand are published here; abstracts for members of the Nutrition Society of Australia are published in the Journal of Nutrition and Intermediary Metabolism (June 2016). The aim of the combined meeting is to foster discussion and disseminate the results of nutrition-related research undertaken by the members of both societies. The theme of the 2015 conference was “Past, Present, Future: 100 years of nutrition”, inspired by the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing in Gallipoli. The first plenary session was titled ‘Past: Military Nutrition: Optimising soldier health and performance’ utlising speakers that work in national defence including Dr Chris Forbes-Ewan (Australia), Dr James McClung (USA), and Ms Nicola Martin (NZ). -

MAURICE WILKINS CENTRE New Zealand’s Centre of Research Excellence targeting human disease Annual Report 2013 Maurice Wilkins Centre The Maurice Wilkins Centre is New Zealand’s Centre of Research Excellence targeting major human diseases. It focuses on cancer, diabetes and infectious disease. New Zealand has an outstanding reputation for biomedical research. The Centre aims to harness this expertise to develop drugs and vaccines, tools for early diagnosis and prevention, and new models of disease. In addition to translational research that directly targets human disease, the Maurice Wilkins Centre encourages innovative fundamental science that has the potential for high impact on human health. The Maurice Wilkins Centre is a multidisciplinary network that brings together leading biologists, chemists and computer scientists. At the end of 2013 it comprised 148 investigators throughout the country, and over 170 early-career affiliates, linking researchers from six universities, three Crown Research Institutes and two private research institutes. These investigators represent most of New Zealand’s expertise in discovering new drugs, vaccines and diagnostic tools that proceed to clinical trials. As the national hub for molecular biodiscovery the Centre provides a point of contact for a broad range of national scientific expertise. It cultivates collaborations with international researchers and research institutions and also engages with industry and the medical profession. The Tourism Export Council of New Zealand is a trade association that has represented the interests of inbound tourism since 1971. What do we do & who do we represent? The Tourism Export Council’s focus is to build long term business relationships with distribution networks in New Zealand and offshore. Both are export industries because they bring in foreign dollars to New Zealand. With agriculture, you grow an apple, send it offshore and a foreigner eats it. A clear pathway of a New Zealand product consumed or purchased by someone overseas. Tourism works slightly differently: The product is still developed in NZ (just like the apple) It is sold offshore (like the apple) It is purchased by a foreigner (again like the apple) BUT it is experienced in NZ and therein lies the difference. -

IN CONFIDENCE Strategic COVID-19 Public Health Advisory Group Terms of Reference Context 1. Aotearoa’s COVID-19 elimination strategy has served New Zealanders well both in terms of health and economic outcomes. One of the keys to that success has been our commitment to constantly learn, adapt and look to the future. This will continue to be critical as we roll out our mass vaccination campaign and move into a new post-pandemic phase of our response. 2. As vaccine coverage increases throughout 2021 the Government will face a number of decisions regarding our border and public health settings. At the same time, we must be to ready to respond to any changes in the epidemiology of COVID-19, including the possible emergence of new variants. 3. To ensure our ongoing response is informed by the best available scientific evidence and expert advice, as the responsible Minister for COVID-19 response I am establishing the Strategic COVID-19 Public Health Advisory Group (the Group) to report to myself (via Minister Verrall) and the COVID-19 Ministerial Group on some of the challenges and opportunities we face. 4. I intend that the Group will work with the COVID-19 Independent Continuous Review, Improvement and Advice Group, especially around health protections post vaccine. The timing benefits both groups giving an opportunity to align their priorities and working approach to eliminate any duplication and cover any gaps. Purpose of the Strategic COVID-19 Public Health Advisory Group 5. The Group will provide independent advice on our ongoing COVID-19 response informed by their expertise in epidemiology, infectious diseases, public health, and modelling. -

This also relates the (111) fcc gold layer to the graphene surface, the gold nanowires to the carbon nanotubes, and the Mackay icosahedra well known in cluster growth simulations to the halma transforms of the fullerene C20. (L. Trombach, S. Rampino, L.-S. Wang, P. Schwerdtfeger, Chem. Europ. J. 22, 8823 (2016). Objectives of Research Centre: Our objective is to advance and disseminate knowledge in the area of theoretical/computational chemistry and physics, and to maintain high international standards in this research field only matched by top research institutes world-wide. All objectives are clearly met, as we are one of the most productive and internationally acclaimed research centres here in New Zealand, with truly outstanding performances by each of our staff members. Our research centre has not been without a Marsden grant running since it was established (a new grant was awarded in 2016 to Joachim Brand), four staff are actively involved in the Dodd-Walls CoRE, four others were successful in a funding bid to the Norwegian Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) to perform research in the field of Chemistry at Extreme Conditions. -

Rail & Maritime Transport Union 30 April 2020 Rail and Maritime Transport Union Submission on Dunedin Railways Ltd Proposal: ‘Mothball Operation and Restructure of Business’ dated 20 April 2020 Summary Dunedin Railways Ltd (‘DRL’) has failed to meaningfully consult on its so-called proposal to cease train services and mothball its assets with the loss of around 70 jobs. DRL has failed to follow Dunedin City Council’s (‘DCC’) instruction on ‘…mothball[ing] the business with a view to exploring feasibility of a small number of alternative options for the company’s assets.’ Rather DRL has tabled a proposal so lacking in detail as to be meaningless. This raises real questions regarding the competence and fitness of DRL’s board and management. DRL has a recent record of failing to engage in adequate community consultation. The RMTU calls for: 1. The immediate dismissal of the current board and the appointment of a new board with staff representation; 2. Genuine and good faith engagement by DRL management with staff and their union to investigate alternative options for the future of DRL; 3. This must be a genuine process that considers the wider picture of DRL’s valued contribution to Dunedin including, but not limited to ,adding to the city’s tourist offering, delivering wider economic benefits, and remaining a part of the city’s heritage. 1 Rail & Maritime Transport Union 30 April 2020 Background 1.
