FRED NEIL LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
FRED NEIL LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. Fred Neil (16 th March 1936 –7th July 2001) was one of the most compelling folk singer-songwriters in the 1960s and early 1970s. His marvellously deep, rich and impossibly low baritone enchanted everyone who has ever heard a Fred Neil song - and continues to do so. Surely one of the most beautiful voices in music. Bob Dylan said, “Fred had a strong, powerful voice, almost a bass voice, and a powerful sense of rhythm. He used to play mostly the type of songs that Josh White might sing. I used to sing and play harmonica for him, and then once in a while get to sing a song.” Yet as performer success eluded Fred, mainly because it was the last thing he pursued. A reluctance to tour didn’t help much either (a trait he shared with Bobby Charles and Harry Nilsson). According to his producer, Nik Venet, Fred was “probably the most famous and financially successful ‘cult artist’ in the history of the world...and could have been even bigger if he’d wanted to be....but he just didn’t!” Fred Neil showed up unexpectedly and was gone before you knew it. A loner and somewhat of a recluse, he was exceedingly hard to get to know and thus remained an enigma to most. John Sebastian, who played on his two Elektra albums, describes his background as “sketchy”. He is best known to the world through other people’s recordings of his material, such as ‘Everybody’s Talkin’’, made famous by Harry Nilsson as the theme to the movie Midnight Cowboy (and earned a Grammy) and ‘Other Side of This Life’, recorded by several but most notably by Jefferson Airplane. -

Michael Downs Trying to Find My Li'l All 'N All (Sitting on Top of the World)
Michael Downs Trying to Find My Li’l All ’n All (Sitting on Top of the World) campground in Mississippi, a cold December dawn: I climbed from a A sleeping bag, befuddled by the clarity of morning. Blinking into sun-glare off the steady surfaces of ponds. Stumbling across frozen, heaved ground that had been mud the night before. Coffee could have helped, but I didn’t have any. My old dog nosed through dry leaves for the best place to piss. For two weeks she and I had traveled, a road-trip start to my fiftieth year. I’ d envisioned back roads from Baltimore to Austin, campgrounds and books, barbecue, reunion with loved ones—my parents, especially, given Mom’s flagging health and chronic pain. Kaimin would gain canine prestige by marking territory at the Clinton Library in Little Rock and Faulkner’s Rowan Oak in Oxford. That had been the plan, and much of it had come to pass. But this day involved a different agenda. Today I’ d see a man about a song—and not just any song, but one that for more than two decades had held me with an inex- plicable grip. On its face, “Sitting on Top of the World” is just an old blues tune, first recorded in 1930 by the Mississippi Sheiks. But it’s a shapeshifter, too, having been performed or recorded hundreds of times in everything from jazz to bluegrass to Texas swing, folk, and rock. Ray Charles, Jack White, the Carter Family, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Bill Frisell, The Grateful Dead—even the “Bye, bye, Miss American Pie” guy: they’ve all done it. -
Alex Harvey and “The Tomahawk Kid”: Mode and Interpretation
Alex Harvey and “The Tomahawk Kid”: Mode and Interpretation David Montgomery Abstract: Alex Harvey and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band achieved only marginal popularity during Harvey’s lifetime. Yet an examination of Harvey’s “The Tomahawk Kid,” based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, shows an idiosyncratic musical style that combines rock and Scottish Celtic influences, subtle textual interpretation, unique compositional choices, and modal tonalities. Introduction The academic study of popular music oscillates between two preoccupations. On one hand, the dogmas of sub-cultural theory still influence popular music discourse and general cultural theory to a great degree. On the other hand, this discourse cannot escape the parameters of its label— popular. In essence, the two poles may be staked as cultural theory versus popular appreciation; but in a way difficult to describe, the application of critical theory has begun to seem more like an attempt to avoid an aesthetic conundrum— a kind of elevation of the demotic artefact to a height it cannot bear. Ever resourceful, the practitioners of popular music studies have wriggled out of this quandary and into the at least temporarily secure embrace of post feminist studies, world pop, and the ethnography of locale; in other words, into areas where inquiry is either of self-evident importance, exotic, or comfortably esoteric. Even if the locale is no more exotic than Glasgow, Scotland or Montgomery, Alabama, or the object mundane, the conceit of the critical stance has proven sufficient. Things change, canons crumble, time has done its work. The difficult “aesthetics” of popular music studies, the indeterminate nature of its aims, is a nagging problem. -
