Rereading Certeau’s ‘Practice of Everyday Life’ Review Essay by Helga Wild Introduction* Page 1 of 19 When I first read the Practice of Everyday Life, I had just left my discipline JBA Review Essay (neuroscience) as well as my country and was struggling to find my way in Spring 2012 intellectually and socially unfamiliar terrain. I was encouraged thus to find a book, which legitimated the ways by which a stranger might appropriate and © The Author(s) 2012 transform the materials of another culture. Several years later I read it a se- ISSN 2245-4217 cond time from the position of a researcher-consultant and found its insights still relevant: this time it was his outline of the stance of the intellectual to- www.cbs.dk/jba wards the object of study that deeply moved me - first in its insistence on one’s obligation towards the implicit, informal, non-verbal subject matter; and second in its acknowledgement of the power axis inherent in every research project, which is all too often ignored or suppressed in the literature on meth- odology in the social sciences. Now, returning to the book for the third time, what was striking and sometimes bewildering in earlier days seems eminently familiar; yet the book retains its freshness and relevance. This time my project is to take in the whole book rather than to just poach on the text for my own purposes (a term Certeau uses and a practice he actually endorses) with a concern for the condi- tions of its genesis. -

Michel de Certeau’s Metatheory of Mysticism DOMINIK FINKELDE, S .J . 1 . Biography and Context As a philosopher and scholar, Michel de Certeau was part of a Twentieth century intellectual movement—that is, structuralism or rather, post-struc- turalism—which has not always been favorably received by the Catholic intellectual tradition . This term indicates an intellectual path that, beginning from the basic insights of linguistics, phenomenology and structuralist anthro- pology rejects the thesis so strongly anchored in Western metaphysical philosophy that there are universal ideas that determine which of their applica- tions in propositions are correct . Post-structuralists reject the ontological thesis that, strictly speaking, there is something like the universality of a concept that is applied and instantiated in our individual speech acts (for example, and in simplified terms, Plato’s theory of ideas, which promotes this prominently, or Gottlob Frege’s talk of “Thoughts”) . What really exists for post-structuralists are linguistic structures of normativity that are to be interpreted as discourses, in themselves justified by research practices and/or language communities. This leads to an opposition between an objectivist conception of the determinations of contents in the sense of Plato and Frege on the one hand, and on the other, to a position that asserts that there are no objective or metaphysical or meta-lin- guistic boundaries of objectivity in determining the content of terms and their references . The crucial shift rendering modernity incommensurable with its own past consists in the emergence of the subject’s self- understanding as “free.” This consciousness is not unrelated… to the concomitant, overarching shift, on which this work focuses, from spirit to value.1 [I]f there is one thing that gives a completely different sense to what Hegel proposed, it is what Freud had nevertheless discovered…, which he characterized… as the death [drive], namely the radical character of repetition, this repetition that insists, and which characterizes the psychic reality, if there is such a thing, of this being inscribed in language.2 I. In the conclusion of her first book, $urplus: Spinoza, Lacan, A. Kiarina Kordela poses the ambitious and timely question of whether an ethics of psychoanalysis could be formulated as a ground for political action that stresses the inherent contradictions and inequities of late capitalism. Her answer is yes, with a little help from Spinoza and Marx, and in this book she reveals how Lacanian ethics contrasts with ethical theories grounded in an “encounter with the neighbor,” insofar as in such ethical models “(e.g., notably, Levinas’s face-to-face encounter with the other)… a third term is missing, which would take into account the death drive.”3 This means of formulating the distinction between ethical systems in itself demands admiration for its logical 102 Alexander Bove elegance and clarity. -

Pre-existing political, economic and socio-economic conditions of each community are examined to understand how, when and why online spaces were produced and populated. Consideration of the availability and configuration of technological services and alternate communication models are used to define the conditions of collaboration between physical and virtual space. Posthuman Bioracism, Or, Capitalism’s Orthodox Humanity and Power A. Kiarina Kordela For some, the discourse on “posthumanism” is inherently egalitarian since, by eliminating the age-old privilege of humans over other forms of life and machines, it finally realizes the democratic ideal of equality for all. I would rather argue that in its attempt to overcome such ostensible divisions as the one between human and non-human, the discourse on posthumanism fails to notice another more overarching, profound, and pernicious mode of discrimination, which is imposed by the very conditions of possibility of posthumanity itself, namely, the economy, epistemology, and ontology of secular capitalist modernity. To do so I invite us to heed to the posthuman in some of the most orthodox texts since the seventeenth century, notably Baruch Spinoza, Karl Marx, Max Weber, Jean-Paul Sartre, Jacques Lacan, Gilles Deleuze, and Michel Foucault. What I shall propose is that the posthuman condition is part of the orthodoxy of secular capitalist modernity, accompanying it since its inception, and that this insight bears important consequences in understanding the mechanisms of modernity’s orthodox form of political power, namely, biopolitics. If today we speak of the posthuman condition, in which humans are living organisms with intra-species biological and machinic components, it is because in the capitalist mode of production humans become inseparable from the means and the products of production,1 which, as we know by now, range from plants and animals to machines and biogenetically produced life, to information, language, and affects. When Jacques Lacan says that “man thinks with his object,” we must take him literally—man thinks with his product.2 Karl Marx spells out more clearly Lacan’s point in his notorious, yet not by necessity adequately heeded theory of commodity fetishism. -

Wolfteich Spirituality studies and practical theology share in common a number of features: attention to practices; importance of historical and social context; 161 interdisciplinary methods; concern with cultivating faithful ways of life; inter- est in appropriation and transformation. At the same time, there are marked differences in emphasis, language, and sensibility. One example: practical theology, long a predominantly Protestant discipline, rarely engages mystical texts or experience, generally preferring hermeneutic philosophy, social science, and ethics as dialogue partners. While some recent writing takes steps to weave spirituality into a framework for practical theology,1 mysticism generally falls outside the scope of the discourse. Mystical authors and texts, on the other hand, feature prominently in Christian spirituality scholarship, which has been strongly shaped by Catholic authors. Can we traverse this divide between mysticism and practical theology? What fruitful new insights might emerge for both disciplines if we go down this road? What challenges might engagement with mystical texts and experience pose for practical theological methods? Michel de Certeau (1925–1986) serves as a provocative, if often enigmatic, dialogue partner in this exploration. MICHEL DE CERTEAU AND THE SPIRITUALITY OF ST IGNATIUS Dominique Salin ICHAEL DE CERTEAU is one of the five most outstanding Jesuits of Mthe twentieth century, after Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and along with Henri de Lubac, Karl Rahner and Bernard Lonergan. At least he is one of those who continue to be written about worldwide. His life as a Jesuit, brief as it was (36 years), provokes exceptional interest thirty years after his death. This is true not only because of the content of his thought, which is to be found in his published writings, but because he was prepared, rather like Teilhard, to venture to the outer limits of academic reflection in relation to culture and orthodoxy. His was a mode of being, a style, that hinted at unexplored forms of freedom.1 This why any consideration of the links that Certeau may have with the spirituality of St Ignatius invites one to recall the analyses, notably in the journal Christus, made by this historian of spirituality of the doctrine 1 Born in 1925, he was already a deacon when he entered the Society of Jesus in 1950; ordained to the priesthood in 1956, he died of cancer in 1986. He was appointed in 1956 to Christus (writing twenty articles, numerous comments and book-reviews), and then in 1967 to Études. He began as a historian of spirituality, specialising in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (learned editions of Pierre Favre and Jean-Joseph Surin, La Possession de Loudun [1970; English, The Possession of Loudun, 2000]). In Études he published a number of key articles on the events of May 1968 (‘En mai dernier, on a pris la parole comme on avait pris la Bastille en 1789’), which brought him to public notice.
