Elena Parker Blessings Leslie McCaffrey Kylee Quintanilla Zachary Reyes Reflection Page 3 VACATION: A TIME OF REST AND ENCOUNTER WITH GOD

Rest, relaxation and stress reduction are very important for people’s well being and health. This can be accomplished through daily activities, such as healthy eating, exercise and meditation, but vacation is part of this as well.

The months of June through August are usually designated as months for vacation especially in this part of the world but other months can also be utilized because of the importance of vacation. The importance of rest and relaxation cannot be over emphasized. The human body is generally like a machine which needs to be turned off after operating for a long period of time. The mind is very powerful and can help in healing, so a rested and relaxed mind is also able to help the body heal well.

The importance of vacation is explicitly manifested when God after creating the world in six days rested on the seventh one thereby stipulating the Sabbath day rest (Genesis 2: 2-3). Psychologists echo the value of vacation for the mind. They are of the opinion that vacation has a profound influence on one’s mental health and that people have a better life perspective and are motivated to achieve more with greater goals after a vacation even if it is one day off.

Our Lord Jesus also knows the value and importance of vacation and rest, that at each point in time in his ministry, he tries to move away from the crowd though this is always futile because they will always find out where he is going and will be there seeking for his attention once again. In spite of this, after sending the apostles on a mission, when they came back, he said to them “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest for a while” (Mark 6:31)

There are many benefits to be derived from taking a vacation. Vacation helps one’s physical health – the stress of work can take a toll on one’s health but many health care professionals say that vacation lessens the risk of heart disease and other physical illness. There is more productivity after vacation as workers are likely to put more emphasis on the work they have to do to meet up. Taking a family vacation increases family bonding especially as they share fond memories. Taking vacation helps one to have a newer perspective and a new outlook on life. When one steps away from problems and stress one is facing, one is bound to get a better perspective and come out with a more satisfying answer to those problems. One of the key benefits of taking time off work is that you would not feel the pressures and discouragement that arise once you begin to show symptom of burning out. Workers who take regular time to relax are less likely to experience burnout, making them more creative and productive than their overworked, under-rested counterparts. Vacation can help to reset the mind.

Over and above all this, vacation time is a period to encounter the Lord. It is a time for introspection and to reconnect with the Divine. Our Lord Jesus admonishes and exhorts us “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11: 28) and St. Augustine made us to understand that our hearts are restless until we rest in the Lord.

Therefore vacation time offers us the opportunity to seek the face of God in a deeper manner with meditation and intense prayer. Many people tend to over schedule their vacation with a lot of activities so that there is no room for God. Many find it difficult to go to Sunday mass and so they also take a vacation from the Lord. If the Lord takes vacation from us we know the result. It is through our encounter with the Lord during this period that our spiritual batteries are recharged and our spiritual energies renewed. It then means that the best rest, the best vacation and the best relaxation one can have is the one done in the Divine presence. I wish those enjoying their vacation now the best of fun time and spiritual renewal.
