  • Ivan Rein's Paris: from the Quartier Latin to Camp Vernet
chapter 5 Ivan Rein’s Paris: From the Quartier Latin to Camp Vernet Ivan Rein (1905–1943) brings us back to Croatia. Unlike Bora Baruh, who as a pre-WWII communist received more attention in post-1945 Yugoslavia, Rein, who perished during the war at the height of his creative life, remained largely forgotten for a number of years. Interest in him was revived only in the early 1980s when his work received an all-encompassing exhibition accompanied a decade later by a monograph.1 The exhibition and the monograph managed to position Rein’s artistic opus, mainly produced during the interwar period in Paris where he spent most of his creative years, in the broader perspective of Croatian and European art.2 1 Growing Up in an Affluent and Acculturated Jewish-Catholic Family Rein was born in Osijek, a provincial town in Croatia’s eastern district of Slavonia. In the early nineteenth century the Habsburgs had declared Osijek 1 The major contribution to the rehabilitation of this talented artist and attempts to revive interest in and re-evaluate his work was that of Jelica Ambruš, the art historian and cura- tor of the Museum of Fine Arts in Osijek, Croatia. Ambruš mounted the first retrospective exhibition of Rein’s work in 1982, initially in Osijek, and then in Zagreb and Belgrade. The exhibition and the accompanying catalogue received significant attention and culminated in her monograph published in 1993. See Jelica Ambruš, Ivan Rein [catalogue, Galerija likovnih umjetnosti, Osijek] (Zagreb: Institut za povijest umjetnosti, 1993). 2 The 1982 exhibit included a great number of Rein’s works that since 1952 had been stored, largely forgotten, in the Modern Art Gallery and the Cabinet of Graphic Art at the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts, both in Zagreb.

Reinstating Osijek’s status to what it once was Why Osijek 2020? Osijek’s main motivation for taking part in the competition for the title of European Capital of Culture is to return its distinctiveness. Candidacy means that the city, along with the ECoC region described here, will re-urbanize and re-contextualize itself in line with its historical identity; it will radically redirect and reconstitute the metabolism of its own socio-economic and cultural being, with a different, nowadays available combination of resources. In its various stages and changes, Osijek once was all that it now wishes to become with the help of ECoC. Only now, it will be done in different circumstances, different times and, understandably so, in a completely different manner.

  • Refugee and Artist: Ivan Rein, Johanna Lutzer, and Jewish Cultural Life in Kraljevica
chapter 9 Refugee and Artist: Ivan Rein, Johanna Lutzer, and Jewish Cultural Life in Kraljevica 1 Escaping to the Adriatic Coast The last letter from Ivan Rein to his Belgrade friend, the artist Cuca Sokić, was written on 14 October 1941 in Gorski Kotar, a picturesque mountainous region of Croatia lying between the town of Karlovac, fifty-six km southwest of Zagreb, and the Adriatic coast’s main northern port city of Rijeka.1 At the time Rein wrote the letter this area was under Italian occupation and control. Known as Zone II, it was demilitarized according to the agreements between Italy and the Independent State of Croatia. This meant that from August 1941 the Ustasha government retained civil authority, but was not allowed to main- tain any military or police presence. Initially, as allies on equal footing the Italians stood by passively while the Ustasha operated death camps in the areas under their occupation: in Gospić, on Mount Velebit, and on Pag Island.2 However, the situation changed once the partisan uprising spread in the area in reaction to the mass atrocities per- petrated by the Ustasha against the local Serbian population, also threatening the presence of the Italian military. As a result, the Italians began to prefer ties with the Chetniks and to adopt an anti-Croatian policy in relation to the Serbs.3 In addition, repeated attacks by partisans which interrupted the regu- lar supply of the Italian army in the areas under their control led the occupi- ers to promote aggressive Italianization of the local population, while public shootings of captured partisan fighters and reprisals against their families, sup- porters, and entire villages became regular practice.4 1 See Ch.
