The Brown Company, a leader in manufacturing gearboxes and gear systems, had been established by the first David Brown in 1860 as a patternmaker specializing in patterns for cast gears. In 1898, it began to manufacture cut gears. The senior David Brown died in 1903 and was succeeded by his sons, Frank and Percy, who specialized in making worm gears and worm gear drives. The business expanded rapidly during World War I, and at the end of the war, David Brown was the largest manufacturer of worm gears in the world. Expansion continued between the wars, and the first expansion outside gear manufacturing and gearboxes was made when it began to manufacture David Brown/Ferguson tractors in 1936. During World War II, it built tank transmissions, ship propulsion system reduction gears, and aircraft gears. The second David Brown had become Managing Director in 1931 and had led the company through the Depression and the war.

  • Classic Car Reviews: the Aston Martin DB Mkiii
Classic Car Reviews: The Aston Martin DB MkIII The Aston Martin DB MkIII, produced from 1956 through to 1959, was the ultimate expression of a lineage started in 1950 by the DB2. The DB2 was the first real post-war Aston Martin; yes, there was the 2-litre Sports, which was retrospectively to become known as the DB1, but with only 15 of that model made, it could legitimately be thought of as somewhat of a prototype. But the DB2 was a car to be reckoned with. This would compete at Le Mans and other races in a variety of guises, from works to enthusiast maniac, and as such was modestly accomplished. It had some drawbacks in that what boot-space there was accommodated only the spare wheel and a large petrol tank. It could also be said that it was strictly a two-seater, but since this was a common feature of sports cars of the day, it seemed like the perfect car for a certain "Mr and Mrs Smith"... Then in 1953 came the Aston Martin DB2/4. This odd designation, given the establishment of a lineage, refers to the addition of two occasional rear seats; still not exactly a place where his lordship holds his balls and dances, but comfortable enough for small children and little people generally. A curious feature of the main coupe version of this car was the hatchback - it was the first production car, to be so equipped and established a reputation with Aston Martin cars of usability. The DB2/4 MkII was broadly similar in concept, except that it had a re-designed rear-end to tap into the fashion for fins, which further improved luggage space - but the Aston Martin DB2/4 MkIII was a minor revolution; not only was the engine uprated, so that the standard unit would now displace the 2.9 litres previously seen on the hotter Vantage versions of cars, but the mechanicals were updated also.

  • CLASSIC CARS OUTPACE GOLD in 2011 Submitted By: Historic Automobile Group International Monday, 30 January 2012
CLASSIC CARS OUTPACE GOLD IN 2011 Submitted by: Historic Automobile Group International Monday, 30 January 2012 Classic cars are more than a safe place to “park” money; they really are better than gold. Annual figures for 2011, just released by the Historic Automobile Group International (HAGI) (http://www.historicautogroup.com), reveal that values in some segments of the classic car market have advanced by more than 20%. By contrast, gold, the traditional safe haven in times of economic uncertainty, returned growth of just 9.93% in 2011. That means if you’d bought the right classic car your investment would have more than doubled the performance of gold. Dietrich Hatlapa, 48, founder of the London-based independent investment research house HAGI (www.historicautogroup.com), said: “We’ve discovered that classic cars move independently of any other investment area, and that’s a very attractive attribute for collectors and investors alike in this day and age.” HAGI, founded in 2007, produces a series of indices charting the top levels of the classic car market. The HAGI Top Index, measuring the performance of 50 key collectible classic cars, advanced by 13.89% in 2011. However, another HAGI index calculation reveals a segment of the top market that has achieved amazing 21.65% growth in 2011. That’s the return offered by the HAGI Top with Ferrari and Porsche removed. (In 2011 the HAGI F Ferrari Index advanced 10.58%, while the HAGI P Porsche Index returned a more modest 4.53%, after strong growth in previous years.) Hatlapa, a former investment banker, commented: “The figures demonstrate very clearly that this is not a uniform market; performance varies from marque to marque and from model to model.
