Andy & Adrian are a comic sensation sweeping the radio waves in Melbourne; a couple of funny buggers in every sense of the word. The boys started their radio careers in 2004 on JOY 94.9, cutting their teeth on late night and weekend programming. Listeners took to their natural rapport and comedic style, and they quickly made their way to breakfast radio where they continue to laugh, entertain … and occasionally offend. Five years behind the microphones and the boys are a highly skilled interviewing machine. They have waxed lyrical with the likes of Rove, Dannii Minogue, Daniel McPherson, Sam Sparro, Rob Mills, Lisa McCune, Anthony Callea, Tim Campbell, Ricki Lee, Denise Drysdale, Bob Downe, Toni Pearen, Human Nature, Noni Hazelhurst, Margaret Cho and even the legendary Joan Rivers. It’s also the story telling of these two best friends that really sets them apart. From how to dress for a wedding in a heat wave to explosive diarrhea on Puffing Billy; nothing is sacred and everything is thigh slappingly funny. The boys have built their audience with their popular YouTube Channel filled with out-takes from their radio show and other skits they have written, produced and acted themselves. There’s the Heal & Toe With Daniel McPherson, Pottery Class with Anthony Callea and Tim Campbell and a Bogan rendition of the hit musical Wicked. They have recently launched The Doona Diaries, a video series where the boys get into bed with celebrities for a behind the scenes interview whilst getting a sneak peak into their top draw. Andy and Adrian also boast strong backgrounds in acting and film. Andy has appeared in Stingers, Marshall Law and Secret Life of Us and wrote and produced the award-winning short film Invitation (Fuji Motion Picture Award, Sydney Queer Film Festival). Adrian graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2004 with a Diploma of Film & TV Producing, where he produced Hunter Finklestein, a short film starring Tim Rogers from You Am I in the lead role. The boys also know how to work a crowd having hosted numerous events including JOY CD Launches, The Midsumma Festival, Melbourne City Romp and World AIDS Day and have hosted a number of corporate engagements with organisations including The City of the Melbourne, ANZ, Qantas and PricewaterhouseCoopers. The paper is concerned with expanding the possibilities for how queer theoretical resources might be utilized within studies of girls and schooling. Existing studies have drawn upon Judith Butler’s notion of a ‘heterosexual matrix’ for understanding, and attending to, the way normative discourses of heterosexuality underpin the school-based production of youthful femininities. The term ‘hetero- femininities’ has been used in order to label these school-produced intersections of sex/gender/sexuality. Drawing on discourses of ‘girl power’ that gather around ‘voice’ and responsibility, I propose that the production of ‘hetero-femininities’ within educational contexts might be further explored, and thus complicated, when the significance of discourses of ‘girl power’ is considered.
