This essay shows how Jose Donoso’s novel, Curfew, rejects this call and marks a new stage in the relationship between socialism and American literature by being socially committed to the actual political situation in Chile without being a socialist text. A Study of Translation-Related Manuscripts in the Anthony Burgess Archives
Zanotti, S. & Bollettieri, R.M.. (2015). Exploring the Backstage of Translations: A study of translation-related manuscripts in the Anthony Burgess archives . Linguistica Antverpiensia, New Series: Themes in Translation Studies , 14 , 127–148. Exploring the backstage of translations: A study of translation- related manuscripts in the Anthony Burgess archives1 Serenella Zanotti Roma Tre University, Italy [email protected] Rosa Maria Bollettieri University of Bologna, Italy [email protected] This article offers a preliminary exploration of the use of translators’ manuscripts in translation research. It will be argued that, aside from a philological interest, studying translators’ papers is crucial in reconstructing the prehistory and process of translations. It will also be argued that such a study is crucial in analysing and evaluating the factors that influence translations, including the roles of the people involved in the translation process. More specifically, applying to translators’ manuscripts the methods of enquiry developed by genetic criticism will be illustrated through a study of the available manuscripts pertaining to the Italian translation of Anthony Burgess’s libretto, Blooms of Dublin (1986). The aim of the study is to show the importance of developing a specific methodology for investigating the prehistory and process of translation. 1. Introduction 2 Jeremy Munday (2012, 2013) has recently called attention to the role that archival methodologies may play in widening the scope of descriptive translation studies. According to Munday (2013), this can be achieved by “combining analysis of the translated product with an investigation of the translation process” (p. 134). Translation-related draft manuscripts and papers appear to be particularly suited to the investigation of such a process because they are “interim products which offer crucial and more direct access to the creative process that is literary translation and provide written evidence of the translator’s decision-making” (Munday, 2013, p. -

NA596012D 7070th Anniversary Edition BOOK I: THE BOOK OF THE PARENTS [The fall] 1 ‘riverrun, past Eve and Adam’s…’ 10:18 The scene is set and the themes of history, the fall, the twin brothers and ‘Bygmester Finnegan’ set out. HCE has fallen (‘Hic Cubat Edilis’), we have attended his wake, and now he lies like a giant hill beside his Liffeying wife (Apud Libertinam Parvulam). 2 ‘Hence when the clouds roll by, jamey...’ 5:28 We enter the Wellington museum in Phoenix Park (‘The Willingdone Museyroom’). The mistress Kathe is our guide. 3 ‘So This Is Dyoublong?’ 7:03 Leaving the museum we find the landscape transformed into an ancient battlefield and recall the events of 566 and 1132 AD as recalled in ‘the leaves of the living of the boke of the deeds’. A strange looking foreigner appears over the horizon. It is a Jute. He converses with a suspicious native Irelander: Mutt. Mutt’s exclamation ‘Meldundleize!’ is the first of many references to Isolde’s final aria, the Liebestod, from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, which begins: ‘Mild und leise...’ 4 ‘(Stoop) if you are abcedminded, to this claybook…’ 7:17 We are brought back abruptly to the present and to tales hinting at scandal. Gradually the wake scene re-emerges: ‘Anam muck an dhoul (soul to the devil)! Did ye drink me doornail!’ HCE (Mr Finnemore) is encouraged to lie easy. There’s nothing to be done about it – either the sin was committed or it wasn’t. Either way it was HCE who caused the hubbub in the first place. -
The Twentieth Century
XV The Twentieth Century JUDIE NEWMAN, JOHN SAUNDERS, JOHN CHALKER, and RENE WEIS This chapter has the following sections: 1. The Novel, by Judie Newman and John Saunders; 2. Verse, by John Chalker; 3. Prose Drama, by Ren6 Weis. Downloaded from https://academic.oup.com/ywes/article/64/1/415/1672491 by guest on 30 September 2021 1. The Novel This section has three categories: (a) General Studies, by Judie Newman; (b) Individual Authors: 1900-45, by John Saunders; (c) Individual Authors: Post-1945, by Judie Newman. The attribution [J-S.] denotes isolated reviews by John Saunders. (a) General Studies The relevant volumes of BHI and BNB provide useful bibliographical aid. MFS contains helpful lists of books received and of books reviewed. Current Contents is most useful in listing the contents of periodicals as they appear. Alistair Davies's An Annotated Critical Bibliography of Modernism1 promises to be similarly useful, with sections on Yeats, Wyndham Lewis, Lawrence, and Eliot arranged chronologically under various headings and the first part of the book devoted to the theory and practice of modernism. Over 200 entries take us from Axel's Castle to 1980, with rational subdivisions so that if one wants to investigate 'the Marxist Critique of Modernism', for example, one finds eight books and essays listed. Critical comments are brief but sensible, and there are indexes of authors and subjects. Davies makes his preferences clear, while including fair coverage of other points of view. [J.S.] Volume 21 of the Gale Information Guide Series completes their bibliography of English Fiction 1900-19501 with entries from Joyce to Woolf. -

Lang: The Sentence That Makes Stephen Dedalus Smash the Lamp The Sentence That Makes Stephen Dedalus Smash the Lamp by FREDERICK K. LANG N Earthly Powers, among the finishing touches Anthony Burgess puts I to his caricature of Joyce at middle age, we find a trace of an earlier portrait of the artist. Hearing thunder, Burgess's "Poor fearful Joyce" reverts to prayer: "0 blessed Sacred Heart of Jesus keep us from harm."1 In the "Circe" episode of Ulysses, Stephen Dedalus, "Choking withfright, remorse and horror," confronts his dead mother. 2 "0 Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on him!" moans the apparition: "Save him from hell, o divine Sacred Heart!" (U 582). The prayer recited by Burgess's Joyce in 1923 and that recited to Joyce's Stephen in 1904 both resemble the invocations in "The Litany of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus,"3 which is contained in numerous prayerbooks and religious manuals, including Devotions to the Sacred Heart ofJesus, published in Dublin. 4 What makes this particular work significant is that, two pages before the Litany of the Sacred Heart, we discover the origin of the sentence which accounts for Stephen's famous assault upon the brothel chandelier, the sentence which leaves him "Translating his spiritual into physical rebellion."5 Preceding the Litany is "An Act of Reparation"- "For the innumerable Irreverences and grievous Offences, by which we and others have insulted the Heart ofJesus" (Dev 304-06). -
